During the 2009 winter break, Zhou Jingmang and Yu Hui Tong helped Teacher Shi prepare for parent-teacher interviews. Zhou Jingmang brought Teacher Shi some rock sugar pear soup, having noticed her recent cough. While assisting with exam papers, Zhou Jingmang saw Zhang Yang's English score of 90, which visibly disheartened her.
Teacher Shi comforted her, assuring her that Zhang Yang's score was good considering his foundation and the exam's difficulty, and promised to speak with Teacher Zhou to ask for leniency. Later, during the parent-teacher interviews, Teacher Zhou spoke with Zhou Jingmang's mother and did not mention her and Zhang Yang's interactions. As Zhou Jingmang and her mother were leaving, Yu Hui Tong deliberately approached them.
She told Zhou Jingmang's mother that while her own grades were good, Zhou Jingmang was even more impressive, not only for her scores but also for writing novels during self-study class, which were highly admired by other students. Zhou Jingmang's mother grew suspicious. Back home, Zhou Jingmang's parents confronted her. Her mother angrily stated that Zhou Jingmang was writing novels during self-study time. Her father demanded the novel, which was eventually retrieved from her schoolbag.
Her mother confiscated it, calling it a waste of time and lecturing her about the importance of focusing on studies, especially with high school graduation approaching. Zhou Jingmang defended her writing, insisting it didn't interfere with her studies, but her parents were resolute. For the entire winter break, she was forbidden from using the internet or going out, and her phone was confiscated.
On New Year's Eve, Zhou Jingmang asked her mother if she could use her phone to wish classmates happy new year, but her mother refused, deeming it a distraction and reminding her that classmates could use the student log for contact, as Shen Yinghui had done earlier. Meanwhile, Zhang Yang struggled to find change for a payphone as his phone was dead.
A kind stranger eventually gave him all their spare change, urging him to make his important call before midnight. At Zhou Jingmang's home, she appeared distracted and out of it, much to her parents' concern. When the landline finally rang, her father announced it was her class monitor, Ling Chen. Zhou Jingmang eagerly answered. Zhang Yang, pretending to be Ling Chen, quickly wished her a Happy New Year.
He acknowledged that it was inconvenient for her to talk and explained that Ling Chen would never call her anyway, so he would do most of the talking. He told her not to worry about his English score, as he hadn't done too badly. Before he could elaborate further, an automated voice announced the time limit was approaching.
Zhou Jingmang managed to tell him that she couldn't write her novel anymore because her parents had confiscated it before the call abruptly ended due to lack of funds. The next day, Zhang Yang called again, with Zhou Jingmang's mother waking her up to take the call, believing it was Ling Chen for study questions. Zhang Yang advised Zhou Jingmang to get a workbook so they could convincingly pretend to discuss problems.
He then revealed that he had a backup of the earlier chapters of her novel, much to her surprise and delight. He set a condition: since her novel had been discovered, she should record the rest of it into a language repeater, and they would exchange it on the first day of school. Zhou Jingmang, overjoyed, quickly ended the call, still pretending to discuss homework, and told her parents she was going to study more.
Her father noted that her attitude towards studying had improved, attributing it to her friendship with "good students." Zhou Jingmang happily began recording her novel into the repeater, while Zhang Yang meticulously transcribed the content she recorded. Upon returning to school, Zhou Jingmang found the atmosphere in class heavy, with everyone looking at her differently. Students whispered behind her back, calling her hypocritical.
They spread rumors that she had reported Teacher Zhou for poor teaching quality because Zhang Yang hadn't met Teacher Zhou's required English score, implying she did it to prevent Zhang Yang's expulsion. This supposedly led to the sudden transfer of both Teacher Zhou and Teacher Shi, making the students believe she was responsible for their departure. Xiao Teacher Ma then entered the classroom to announce that Teacher Shi would no longer be their class teacher, and he would take over.
He also stated that Teacher Zhou would no longer be teaching them English. He urged students to continue studying hard regardless of teacher allocations, as they would soon be entering their senior year. His announcement seemed to confirm the rumors in the students' minds. Concerned about the widespread gossip and not wanting Zhou Jingmang to be the center of attention, Zhang Yang suggested they ask Xiao Teacher Ma to change their deskmates.
He argued it would stop people from talking about her helping him with lessons. However, Zhou Jingmang firmly refused, asserting that since she hadn't done anything wrong, she shouldn't hide, recalling Zhang Yang's own advice from a previous incident. She further reasoned that changing seats would only validate the rumors about them and the teachers covering up for them, which would be a disservice to the teachers.
Zhang Yang was impressed by her newfound resilience, remarking that he was "getting to know her again." Later, Zhang Yang took Zhou Jingmang to the sky terrace, a secluded spot. He encouraged her to shout out her feelings to lift her spirits, playfully starting by yelling "Zhou Jing Mang is a primary school student!" Zhou Jingmang, initially annoyed, soon joined in, exuberantly declaring Zhang Yang a "naughty kindergarten friend."
Zhang Yang noted that she had laughed, and Zhou Jingmang, feeling empowered, proclaimed that since she had done nothing wrong, she was not afraid of any rumors. She vowed to work hard to get into the best university and become a writer, with Zhang Yang cheering her on. Zhou Jingmang later sought out Xiao Teacher Ma to understand the situation.
He explained that Teacher Zhou had been transferred to teach the 11th grade, and Teacher Shi had resigned due to personal family matters. He clarified that these were normal transfers and not connected to the rumors. Relieved, Zhou Jingmang then confessed that she hadn't given up on her dream of writing and asked if Xiao Teacher Ma would still be willing to guide her. He readily agreed, provided that her writing did not interfere with her studies.
Later, Shen Yinghui showed Zhou Jingmang a widespread image—a screenshot of a chat history that revealed the true reason behind Teacher Zhou's transfer. The screenshot showed Yu Hui Tong admitting she had casually mentioned some complaints about Teacher Zhou to her father, who then reported it to the school, leading to Teacher Zhou being transferred to a lower grade.
While this cleared Zhou Jingmang's name, both she and Shen Yinghui wondered why Yu Hui Tong would do such a thing and how her private chat became public. Yu Hui Tong became isolated by her classmates. Despite Shen Yinghui's anger towards Yu Hui Tong, Zhou Jingmang felt sympathetic and suggested they help her, explaining that Xiao Teacher Ma had clarified that Teacher Shi resigned for personal family reasons and Teacher Zhou was merely transferred, debunking the earlier rumors entirely.
Unexpectedly, Teacher Shi then appeared, announcing her return from her break. In 2015, Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui discussed Zhang Yang's inability to dance due to a ligament injury, sympathizing with how difficult it must have been for him over the past five years. Zhou Jingmang realized this might explain his prolonged absence and reluctance to meet them. She also apologized to Shen Yinghui, stating that she and Zhang Yang would not be able to help with her ballet performance.
Shen Yinghui, however, was understanding, telling Zhou Jingmang not to worry and to focus instead on spending time with Zhang Yang to help him overcome his trauma and find happiness again. For their first date, Zhou Jingmang chose the school. When Zhang Yang asked why, she revealed that it had been her high school dream to openly walk hand-in-hand with him through the school grounds, a chance she couldn't let slip away after finally finding him again. Zhang Yang took her hand. She then produced a shovel, declaring it was for a "treasure hunt."
