In autumn 2008, Zhang Yang unilaterally signed Zhou Jingmang up for the 200-meter race, having withdrawn from it himself and replaced his entry with Li Yu Xiang's name. Annoyed by his prank, Zhou Jingmang declared she would train with Li Yu Xiang. Zhang Yang watched them train with a visibly frustrated expression.
During training, Zhou Jingmang quickly tired, but Li Yu Xiang reassured her, emphasizing the importance of the process over results and contrasting his more relaxed approach with Zhang Yang's goal-driven nature. On the day of the sports festival, Zhou Jingmang initially led in the 200-meter race, with classmates cheering her on. However, upon seeing Zhang Yang, she became distracted and fainted just before the finish line. Zhang Yang immediately rushed to her side, carrying her to the infirmary.
There, Zhou Jingmang, though already conscious, feigned unconsciousness. When she sensed Zhang Yang approaching or thought he was about to do something, she startled awake. Zhang Yang then criticized her attitude, reminding her that he had brought her there. He also gave her a novel, telling her the nurse had said she was fine. She retorted that it was all his fault, prompting him to tease her about thinking Li Yu Xiang had carried her.
Zhang Yang then jokingly claimed he had dragged her by her hair, though he had actually carried her. He assured her she could leave once fully awake. Later, in the dormitory, Shen Yinghui confirmed that Zhang Yang had indeed carried Zhou Jingmang to the infirmary. She insisted Zhou Jingmang attend the evening's victory party and dress up to avoid embarrassing herself in front of Zhang Yang, reminding her that the teacher had allowed them to dress as they liked.
Zhou Jingmang, still upset with Zhang Yang, initially resisted. Shen Yinghui offered a "princess-style" dress, but Zhou Jingmang opted for a simpler one of Shen Yinghui's, pairing it with a red hoodie. They attempted to style her hair by braiding it wet to create curls, but the result was a wild, rock-band-like look, far from the intended magazine picture. With no time to re-wash, Zhou Jingmang decided to stick with her chosen outfit and hairstyle.
At the victory party, Zhang Yang tried to reserve a seat for Zhou Jingmang, even preventing Zhuang Jie from sitting there. Zhuang Jie teased Zhang Yang, suggesting his jealousy-driven prank had backfired and that Zhou Jingmang wouldn't sit with him anyway since he hadn't apologized. Yu Hui Tong then arrived and directly took the reserved seat next to Zhang Yang.
Meanwhile, Li Yu Xiang approached Zhou Jingmang, offered her food, and then sat beside her, asserting his place as her deskmate. Seeing this, Zhang Yang called Zhou Jingmang out of the room. Outside, Zhang Yang criticized her curly hair, calling it "ugly." Zhou Jingmang, who expected the insult, turned to leave. Zhang Yang then handed her a hat, claiming it was a free gift from a book purchase, conveniently suited to "cover her head."
He then suggested taking a picture with her phone, noting they were both wearing red hoodies, and captured a photo. Around Christmas, Zhou Jingmang, Shen Yinghui, and Qin Zhen met up. Qin Zhen, who had transferred to study nursing, enthusiastically shared her pride in her new school and her dream to become a "good white angel." Shen Yinghui then asked Zhou Jingmang if she wanted to buy a "blessing fruit" (peace apple), as she saw a vendor outside.
Zhou Jingmang firmly refused to buy one for Zhang Yang, citing his unprovoked prank of signing her up for the race and insisting he owed her an apology first. Shen Yinghui speculated that Zhang Yang's actions might have stemmed from jealousy regarding Li Yu Xiang. Later, while out, Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang encountered Ling Chen.
He attempted to give Shen Yinghui a blessing fruit and an apple ornament, but she rejected them both, stating she didn't like apples and they had already clarified their relationship. She advised him to find other friends, which led Ling Chen to sadly conclude that no matter his efforts, no one truly respected him. Back in her dormitory, Zhou Jingmang attempted to wrap an apple, worried it might look ugly.
When Shen Yinghui returned, Zhou Jingmang, embarrassed, quickly pretended to eat the apple she was preparing, taking a bite. Shen Yinghui, noticing the wrapping paper and books on the table, simply smiled knowingly without commenting. Shen Yinghui then informed Zhou Jingmang that she had been chosen for field duty the next day, as part of a school-wide hygiene inspection, due to her student ID number. Zhou Jingmang lamented her bad luck.
Later that evening, Li Yu Xiang, learning that Zhou Jingmang was assigned to field duty with Ling Chen, offered to cover for Ling Chen, who was feeling unwell. Zhuang Jie overheard this conversation and immediately called Zhang Yang, informing him that "Li Yu Xiang started up again." The next morning, Zhang Yang intercepted Li Yu Xiang, who was on his way to field duty, asserting that Zhou Jingmang wouldn't talk to him anyway.
Zhang Yang then snatched the duty armband from him. While on duty, Zhang Yang quietly followed Zhou Jingmang and pulled her out of the way just before she could be splashed with water. He then playfully demanded she wipe his face, teasing her about only partially repaying him. He reminded her it was Christmas Eve and asked if she had prepared a gift.
When Zhou Jingmang offered to buy him a "blessing fruit" (apple) immediately, Zhang Yang dismissively called it "lame" and unnecessary. Zhou Jingmang, feeling conflicted about giving a gift, later consulted Zhuang Jie. He reassured her that if she wanted to give a gift, she should, as everyone appreciates presents. Taking his advice, Zhou Jingmang went to a stall outside school to buy apples, only to find they were all sold out.
The vendor, however, gave her an "extra giveaway item" – an apple keychain. Meanwhile, Yu Hui Tong gave Zhang Yang a crystal apple. Upon hearing Zhuang Jie's hint about Zhou Jingmang having a gift for him, Zhang Yang mistakenly assumed the crystal apple was from her. Later, Zhou Jingmang entered the classroom and saw Zhang Yang holding the crystal apple. Feeling disheartened, she thought her own apple keychain gift seemed shabby in comparison.
Zhang Yang, still under the impression it was her gift, later casually commented on how "ugly" and "unpresentable" it was, then accidentally dropped and broke it. Zhou Jingmang, witnessing this, clarified that it was not her gift, and that she only had "that one" (referring to her apple keychain). Zhang Yang, realizing his mistake, then understood that her actual intended gift was the modest apple keychain.
As Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui walked, Shen Yinghui remarked that the apple keychain's quality wasn't very good, finding it "not very pretty." Ling Chen, who happened to be nearby, overheard this comment and clenched his fist, appearing visibly upset, further reinforcing his earlier belief that Shen Yinghui looked down on him.
Years later, in 2015, Zhang Yang returned home, reflecting on Zhou Jingmang's recent confession at the KTV, where she bravely conveyed her feelings and gave him a USB drive containing her experiences from the past five years. She told him that despite not always succeeding, she never gave up, and that she would wait for him. Zhang Yang then looked at the USB drive. The next day, his mother woke him up, commenting on his late sleep.
She then praised Yu Hui Tong, who visited them that morning, bringing gifts despite working overtime at school. His mother highlighted Yu Hui Tong's considerate nature, beauty, kindness, good career, and similar family background, expressing her strong approval. Without finishing his meal, Zhang Yang abruptly left for the school. Upon arrival, he found not only Yu Hui Tong but also Zhou Jingmang waiting for him.
