In the summer of 2008, Zhang Yang, Shen Yinghui, and Qin Zhen surprised Zhou Jingmang with tickets to an S. H. E. concert, having initially led her to believe she was merely assisting Zhang Yang. Zhou Jingmang, initially hesitant about the expense, was convinced to join them. On their bus ride back after the concert, the three friends joyfully recounted their experience, marveling at having seen their idol live. Zhou Jingmang declared it the happiest day of her life.
However, a sudden, heavy downpour caught them unprepared at the bus stop. Mindful of Zhou Jingmang’s curfew, Zhang Yang quickly gave her a raincoat and rode her home on his bicycle. During the ride, he playfully exchanged the concert ticket's value for the right to be the first to read all her future novels. Upon reaching her house, Zhou Jingmang gave him a small gift.
Meanwhile, Ling Chen arrived at the bus stop, explaining that Zhuang Jie had a family matter and couldn't come. Qin Zhen, sensing that Ling Chen wanted to speak with Shen Yinghui privately, lied and said her father was coming to pick her up, encouraging Shen Yinghui to ride with Ling Chen. Shen Yinghui reluctantly agreed but asked Ling Chen to stop halfway.
She confronted him, expressing her dislike for people who approached her with ulterior motives, believing he was seeking to use her mother, a doctor, for his father's convenience at the hospital. Ling Chen attempted to explain his family's poverty and his genuine desire for his father's treatment, but Shen Yinghui refused to listen, hailing a taxi to go home alone. Qin Zhen was left by herself at the bus stop.
The next day, news of a major earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan province, spread, deeply unsettling everyone. In class, Teacher Shi placed a donation box for earthquake relief and entrusted Ling Chen with its care. Meanwhile, Qin Zhen, having been drenched in the rain, developed acute pneumonia and was hospitalized. Zhuang Jie, feeling guilty, visited her at the Affiliated Hospital. He pressed her about her lie.
Qin Zhen eventually confessed that she fabricated the story about her father to give Ling Chen and Shen Yinghui an opportunity to spend time alone. Zhuang Jie was furious, chastising her for disregarding her health. Returning to school, Zhuang Jie confronted Ling Chen, who found his anger inexplicable. When Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang arrived, Zhuang Jie explained Qin Zhen's actions, which further solidified Shen Yinghui's conviction that Ling Chen was opportunistic.
Later, Li Yu Xiang offered Zhou Jingmang a first-aid kit and self-help tips in light of the earthquake. Zhang Yang swiftly intervened, declining the gift on Zhou Jingmang’s behalf and instead giving her a small bottle, explaining it could indicate an earthquake in her dorm. He asserted that he would ensure her safety. That afternoon, as Zhou Jingmang submitted homework to Teacher Zhou, she observed Ling Chen delivering a lunchbox to the teacher, who then offered to tutor him.
This scene made Zhou Jingmang ponder whether friendships were merely transactional. Zhang Yang, overhearing her thoughts, strongly disagreed, reminding her of their friendship which defied such notions. Later that day, Zhang Yang slipped a note into Zhou Jingmang’s English textbook, instructing her to meet him at the eastern perimeter wall for a surprise. After scaling the wall, they arrived at an event venue, only to discover the event had been postponed.
Despite this, Zhou Jingmang was delighted by a large cardboard standee of S. H. E. Zhang Yang, noticing her fondness, managed to acquire it for her. He playfully signed his own name next to Hebe's on the standee, declaring that wherever S. H. E. was, he would be there too. Years later, in 2015, Zhou Jingmang was working in her office.
While looking at Zhang Yang's image on her computer, she was startled by a colleague and accidentally spilled hot coffee on her leg. Zhang Yang, who happened to be present to deliver documents, immediately carried her to the men's restroom to rinse the burn with cold water. As she treated her leg, they briefly reminisced about a previous, memorable encounter in a men's restroom. Zhou Jingmang expressed her desire to rekindle their friendship, but Zhang Yang gently refused, stating he couldn't overcome the emotional barrier that separated them.
