In the spring of 2008, Ling Chen was collecting subject selection forms for Teacher Shi. Zhou Jingmang informed him that she would submit hers the following day. Ling Chen then provided Shen Yinghui with a challenging practice test from a highly regarded professor, which piqued Qin Zhen's curiosity. Qin Zhen also eagerly presented a flyer for a S. H. E. concert to be held in Nanjing, highlighting it as a rare opportunity since the group would be so close.
Zhou Jingmang, however, was hesitant due to concerns about her parents' disapproval and the 280-yuan ticket price for even the cheapest seats in the stands, ultimately deciding not to go. She preferred not to lie to her parents, even when Qin Zhen offered to help make an excuse. Instead of the concert, Qin Zhen suggested they all go see the movie "My Blueberry Nights" with Zhuang Jie, who had movie tickets after losing a bet.
Overhearing this conversation, Zhang Yang, who had been resting on his desk, silently rose and left the classroom. The girls then heard that Zhang Yang had been in contact with an agent and might be moving to Beijing to become a trainee. Zhang Yang, however, stubbornly denied his reasons. Separately, Yu Huitong offered Zhang Yang a pair of gloves as a farewell gift for his supposed journey to Beijing.
When he refused, she surmised that he was not going because of Zhou Jingmang, to which Zhang Yang simply stated that his decision was a personal matter and that staying was important to him. Meanwhile, Shen Yinghui encountered Ling Chen at the hospital. She asked him for help with a math problem.
Ling Chen’s explanation, which involved connecting a simple auxiliary line, made Shen Yinghui realize that straightforward solutions are often overlooked, a thought that resonated with her as she recalled Zhang Yang's past act of helping Zhou Jingmang on stage. Later, Zhang Yang was seen purchasing five large boxes of drinks to collect a complete set of three S. H. E. mini keychains, a promotional giveaway.
Li Yu Xiang also visited Zhou Jingmang, using the delivery of her class's mail as an excuse to see her. He proudly shared that he had joined the Lan Mu dance team, becoming its second-youngest member, though he found the actual youngest, a child of five or six, quite childish. Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui excitedly showed Zhou Jingmang their S. H. E. concert tickets.
When Zhang Yang joined them and asked if he and Zhou Jingmang could also attend, Qin Zhen explained that Zhou Jingmang couldn't go due to prior commitments and the expensive ticket price. To help Zhou Jingmang, Zhang Yang swiftly declared that she had promised to be his assistant for an upcoming performance in exchange for the keychains, thus providing her with a plausible reason not to attend the concert. Back in class, Zhou Jingmang noticed Zhang Yang's continued absence and attempted to text him. Despite his father's anger, Zhang Yang asserted that his decision to study humanities was for himself. He then added, teasingly, that being in the same class would also make it easier for Zhou Jingmang to tutor him, and reiterated his request for her to be his assistant for his performance.
Around the same time, Shen Yinghui, who was planning to visit Ling Chen for more questions, observed him tenderly caring for his father in the hospital and quietly left, respecting their private moment. That weekend, Zhang Yang, confessing his nervousness about watching a movie with a girl for the first time, woke Zhuang Jie early to head to the cinema. They met Qin Zhen, Shen Yinghui, and Zhou Jingmang there, with Shen Yinghui arriving elegantly dressed.
Zhang Yang quietly told Zhou Jingmang not to feel self-conscious, emphasizing that she and Shen Yinghui were incomparable, which angered Zhou Jingmang, who responded by stepping on his foot. Zhuang Jie's movie tickets presented a seating dilemma: four seats were together, but one was in the row behind. As Zhou Jingmang hesitated, Shen Yinghui quickly took the seat next to Zhang Yang, leaving Zhou Jingmang to sit alone in the back.
Watching Zhang Yang and Shen Yinghui together, Zhou Jingmang’s imagination ran wild, leading her to accidentally spill her cola on Zhang Yang. Mortified, she apologized profusely and rushed to the restroom. When she returned, Zhang Yang had moved to sit beside her, having switched seats with the person next to her to spare Zhou Jingmang further embarrassment. In 2015, Zhou Jingmang remained determined to help Zhang Yang, believing that a significant event must have occurred during the intervening five years to cause his profound change. She sought out Yu Huitong, who disclosed that her initial encounter with Zhang Yang had been a blind date arranged by their parents.
Yu Huitong clarified that nothing romantic developed; in fact, she later saw Shen Yinghui at Zhang Yang's office, where Zhang Yang had explicitly stated in front of Yu Huitong that he no longer wished to see "everyone," a statement that included Yu Huitong herself. Yu Huitong then conveyed to Zhou Jingmang that while no one could truly help Zhang Yang, perhaps Zhou Jingmang herself held that possibility.
Subsequently, Zhang Yang returned to work after his leave, ensuring continued interactions with Zhou Jingmang. He was assigned a task requiring him to deliver photocopies to someone named "Xiao Zhou," and Zhou Jingmang's contact information was attached to the document.
