Remember My Boy Recap
Episode 1 Recap
In 2007, Zhou Jingmang was sixteen, a vibrant and inspiring year marked by the successful launch of Chang'e to the moon, the anticipation of the Olympic Games, and Jay Chou releasing his eighth album, which included the popular song "Cowboy on the Run." For teenagers like Zhou Jingmang and Zhang Yang, these were days filled with imagination, innocence, and fearlessness, as they embarked on a new chapter of fulfilling their dreams.
Zhou Jingmang reflected on this period, realizing it was when they learned bravery, hard work, perseverance, and passion, allowing them to proudly declare their youth was without fears or regrets. That summer, Zhou Jingmang had her first encounter with Zhang Yang. While cycling to school, she was distracted by passersby and nearly crashed into a truck. Zhang Yang grabbed her to prevent the collision, but then unexpectedly let go, causing her to fall.
He told her to watch the road and stop causing trouble for others before leaving, leaving Zhou Jingmang fuming. Later, upon arriving at Haicheng Secondary School, she was surprised to see Zhang Yang playing basketball on the court; her sudden reaction drew the attention of other students, embarrassing her, and she quickly headed to her dormitory.
There, Zhou Jingmang met her two roommates: Shen Yinghui, the school's talented and academically strong beauty, and Qin Zhen, an outgoing, frank, and very social girl. The three quickly formed an inseparable bond, like an "equilateral triangle" of friendship. When Zhou Jingmang introduced herself, the dorm supervisor unexpectedly entered, nearly discovering the new electronic product Shen Yinghui and Qin Zhen were examining. Zhou Jingmang quickly covered for them, assuring the supervisor they would follow all rules.
Qin Zhen later expressed relief, noting her father would have been furious if the expensive new gadget had been confiscated. During the subsequent class meeting, they were introduced to their homeroom and math teacher, Shi Xiaojing, who was gentle, beautiful, and beloved by her students. She initiated a game where students passed a scrunchie and introduced themselves. Ling Chen was the first, a legendary scholar known for being handsome, smart, proud, and aloof.
He spoke of his ambition and diligence, inviting classmates to ask him for help with studies. Zhou Jingmang was surprised to find Zhang Yang sitting behind her. When it was his turn, he was awakened by a classmate and simply stated, "I'm Zhang Yang. Nothing else." Zhou Jingmang then introduced herself, expressing her love for reading and her desire to get along with everyone, asking to be called "Zhou Zhou."
Another classmate, Wang Miao, introduced himself as a boy who loved smiling. Zhuang Jie, a joker and good-natured but somewhat clumsy, was also introduced as Zhang Yang's close friend. Later, Qin Zhen encountered Yu Hui Tong, the top scorer in Chinese Literature from the middle school entrance exam, in the restroom.
Yu Hui Tong was incredibly smart and diligent, able to recite entire Chinese textbooks from memory, but she came across as unapproachable, often stating that she disliked people who were both stupid and lazy. Qin Zhen tried to be friendly, but Yu Hui Tong ignored her, continuing to recite poetry.
This led to friction with other students, who felt she was arrogant, especially after she gave an impatient answer to a classmate's question, dismissively saying, "That's how the ancient people spoke. There aren't that many 'whys'." Qin Zhen and another classmate discussed Yu Hui Tong's pride, prompting Yu Hui Tong to challenge Zhou Jingmang to a poetry recitation contest to prove her intelligence.
While Zhou Jingmang could recite passages from "Charm of a Maiden Singer" and another classical poem, it was Yu Hui Tong who effortlessly recited a passage from "Teng Wang Tower Preface" when Zhou Jingmang hesitated, leaving everyone impressed with Yu Hui Tong's vast knowledge. Xiao Teacher Ma, their Chinese teacher, called Zhou Jingmang to his office. He praised her essay, remarking on her literary talent and admitting he had not expected such a gifted writer in the class.
He had already printed her essay and posted it on the school's notice board, believing it had the quality to be published in a magazine. He encouraged her to submit it and offered to help, gifting her a pen and wishing her continued success in writing. Zhou Jingmang felt a surge of confidence.
When Shen Yinghui and Qin Zhen learned about the essay being posted, they were thrilled and insisted on going to see it and take photos as a memento. On their way, Qin Zhen criticized Yu Hui Tong for her aloofness, unaware that Yu Hui Tong was behind them. Yu Hui Tong overheard their conversation, stating she looked down on those who talked behind others' backs.
She confronted Zhou Jingmang, saying that one good essay didn't prove her superiority and challenged her to compete in the next exam, which Zhou Jingmang accepted. The next day, during military training preparations, Qin Zhen shared a tip she overheard from senior students: putting something in their shoes to prevent discomfort, as military training often caused foot pain. The three girls decided to try it.
During military drills, Zhuang Jie and Zhang Yang were fooling around, and Zhuang Jie accidentally threw a notebook, hitting the instructor. Zhang Yang immediately took responsibility to spare the entire class from punishment, resulting in him being ordered to run ten laps. Feeling a surge of guilt for her earlier critical thoughts about Zhang Yang, Zhou Jingmang bought a bottle of water for him.
However, before she could give it to him, she saw Zhang Yang capriciously change the "B" next to her name to a "D" on a notebook. She then overheard classmates discussing Zhuang Jie's notebook, which ranked the girls by their looks, with 'A' being the most beautiful and 'D' the ugliest. Realizing the insult, her guilt vanished, replaced by anger, and she tore up an apology note she had written for him.
Later that evening, in the dormitory, Shen Yinghui suddenly turned pale and clutched her stomach. The infirmary was closed, so Zhou Jingmang urgently sought out Zhang Yang and Zhuang Jie for help. They quickly transported Shen Yinghui to the hospital, where they discovered the doctor was Shen Yinghui's mother. She thanked them for their help and asked them to return to school as she would take care of her daughter.
On the taxi ride back, Zhang Yang told Zhou Jingmang that a life of "foolish laughter" was meaningless and suggested she use her free time to memorize English words. To everyone's surprise, Zhou Jingmang took his advice seriously and memorized a hundred words on the journey back to school, impressing even Zhuang Jie. As Zhou Jingmang watched Zhang Yang walk away after they returned to the dorm, she began to understand.
Although she had initially seen him as a fleeting incident in her sixteen-year-old life, she realized that the lively boy on the basketball court had, in a single moment, taken over her entire world. Eight years later, in 2015, at a high school class reunion, Zhou Jingmang felt a sense of loss when Zhang Yang was not among those present.
Qin Zhen suggested a game: everyone would write down their life plans on a slip of paper, which would then be randomly picked and read aloud. One classmate, Wang Miao, whose past self-proclaimed hatred for studying was well-known, surprised everyone when his slip revealed his plan to successfully complete his post-graduate thesis. Lin Meng, who once dreamed of being a flight attendant, shared that she was now a nurse, having achieved "half" of her ambition. When Zhou Jingmang's turn came, she picked a slip that belonged to Shen Yinghui, which simply read: "To find Zhang Yang."
Episode 2 Recap
When Zhang Yang lowered his head to look at Zhou Jingmang in the soft summer breeze, she realized every encounter planned by fate was not a mere coincidence. She understood then that a destined meeting, a glance in class, and an instant of excitement would profoundly intertwine their future. At that youthful age, such fleeting moments brought joy and held deep meaning, marking the true beginning of their story.
In the summer of 2007, a recovered Shen Yinghui decided to treat Zhang Yang and Zhuang Jie to a meal as a thank you for their help during her illness, with Zhou Jingmang and Qin Zhen also joining. Qin Zhen complimented Shen Yinghui on her beauty. When Zhang Yang saw Zhou Jingmang, he immediately teased her about her appearance, asking her age. After she stated she was sixteen, he jokingly remarked that she looked like a six-year-old.
Qin Zhen quickly defended Zhou Jingmang, and Shen Yinghui then ushered everyone inside, expressing her happiness to have met them in high school. During dinner, Qin Zhen suggested a game where everyone would write their dreams on a slip of paper. They would then randomly pick a paper, and the person whose dream they picked would become its "dream guardian." Qin Zhen declared her dream was to become a flight attendant, which Zhuang Jie lightly mocked.
Zhuang Jie's own dream was simply "to be happy," which Qin Zhen found uninspired. When Zhou Jingmang revealed she had drawn Zhang Yang's paper, it was blank. Zhang Yang claimed he had no dream. Shen Yinghui, on the other hand, passionately shared her aspiration to be a ballet dancer, having pursued it since childhood. Zhang Yang held Zhou Jingmang's paper but deflected, joking that a six-year-old wouldn't have a dream, thereby avoiding reading it aloud.
Later, as they walked back to the dorms, Zhang Yang warned Zhou Jingmang not to secretly badmouth him. Zhou Jingmang, attempting to comfort him, claimed she also had no dreams. However, Zhang Yang countered that he simply hadn't revealed his dream because it hadn't come true yet. Feeling competitive, Zhou Jingmang then passionately declared her true dream: to become a bestselling author who could lead a new era of literature, an incredibly accomplished writer.
Zhang Yang playfully dismissed her ambitious dream, telling her to "go home and have sweet dreams," before Shen Yinghui intervened, suggesting they all head back. As military training neared its conclusion in the autumn of 2007, Class 6, 10th grade excelled in their performance review. The instructor praised them and allowed them to rest. Having grown fond of their instructor, the students, led by Qin Zhen, decided to take a group photo with him using Qin Zhen's mobile phone.
This moment was interrupted by Teacher Zhou, the strict director of the teaching department and their English teacher, whom students secretly nicknamed "Zhou Ba Pi." He sternly reprimanded them for violating school rules by possessing a phone during military training and confiscated Qin Zhen's device. When the instructor attempted to take responsibility, Teacher Zhou dismissed him. Infuriated by Teacher Zhou's aggressive manner, Zhang Yang stepped forward, seemingly intending to physically confront him.
Zhou Jingmang, fearing Zhang Yang's impulsiveness, knelt down and hugged his legs, pleading with him to calm down. Her actions successfully diffused the situation, and Zhang Yang slowly backed down. Despite the students' protests about Teacher Zhou's harshness, he angrily instructed Qin Zhen to call her parents before leaving. After the last military theory class, Qin Zhen urged Zhou Jingmang to join her for a walk, as Shen Yinghui was with Teacher Shi.
Unbeknownst to Zhou Jingmang, her notebook had fallen onto the floor in the classroom. Outside, Qin Zhen excitedly informed Zhou Jingmang that Zhang Yang had been exceptionally admitted to the school basketball team as a first-year student, even comparing his basketball skills to Liu Chuan Feng. Zhou Jingmang remained unfazed by this news. Qin Zhen's attention then shifted to Ling Chen, who was engrossed in a book while everyone else was playing.
Qin Zhen spoke admiringly of Ling Chen, recounting how he discreetly supported his ailing parents and refused special treatment from teachers, preferring to achieve success through his own efforts. Qin Zhen saw him as a positive role model and expressed a strong desire to befriend him. Zhou Jingmang, however, simply stated her wish to remain inconspicuous and have a peaceful path to college.
Upon returning to the classroom, Zhou Jingmang discovered her notebook had been torn up by some male classmates, folded into paper airplanes, and thrown around, some even out the window. Furious, and ignoring the ringing class bell, she rushed downstairs to retrieve the scattered pages. Zhang Yang followed her outside, seeing her upset. He tried to help her retrieve two of the paper airplanes but accidentally bumped her, causing her nose to bleed. He promptly took her to the infirmary.
The nurse confirmed it was a minor injury from an external cause and would stop bleeding soon. Zhang Yang also pointed out an injury on Zhou Jingmang's arm, but then told the nurse it wasn't serious and no medicine was needed for it. While Zhou Jingmang was recovering in the infirmary, Zhang Yang stayed by her side.
He noticed she still had tissue stuffed in her nose even after the bleeding stopped and teased her, asking if she wanted to suffocate. He then picked up her notebook, which contained her novel, and started reading it. When Zhou Jingmang questioned him, he admitted he had just read it. He then commented that she had portrayed him too simply, like a delinquent, suggesting she didn't know him well enough.
When she asked how to get to know him better, he playfully said it would take at least three years. He then offered to reveal his dream to her, but only if she agreed to a promise: he would tell her his dream when her first essay was officially published. Though Zhou Jingmang initially found this a way to delay telling her, she eventually agreed to a pinky promise.
The incident during military training, where Zhou Jingmang bravely intervened to stop Zhang Yang, transformed her from an "invisible girl" into a well-known figure on campus. Many admired her courage, but Zhou Jingmang herself knew that in that moment, she was so nervous her stomach hurt, feeling a surge of emotion she had never experienced before.
It felt like an innate instinct to protect Zhang Yang, and despite the tension, she had never felt so happy, as if she had successfully overcome a significant challenge. In 2015, at a high school reunion, the friends revisited a similar game, sharing their current life plans. Zhou Jingmang drew a slip from Shen Yinghui, on which was written "Find Zhang Yang."
Shen Yinghui explained her current plan was to produce a ballet performance depicting their youth, and to do so, she needed to interview everyone, including Zhang Yang. This mention visibly saddened Zhou Jingmang. Later that night, Zhou Jingmang became heavily intoxicated. As Shen Yinghui helped her home, Zhou Jingmang, in her drunken state, wondered why Zhang Yang had suddenly disappeared, abandoning all their promises.
She reflected on her own unwavering efforts to fulfill their agreement and questioned what Zhang Yang was willing to sacrifice for her. She cried out to an imagined Zhang Yang, begging him not to leave her. Back at Zhou Jingmang's place, Shen Yinghui noticed Zhou Jingmang still kept a scarf, a symbol of their friendship and Zhang Yang's presence, realizing they both still harbored feelings for him. Just then, Zhou Jingmang's phone rang.
Shen Yinghui answered, and the caller simply stated, "I'm Zhang Yang," before hanging up. Shen Yinghui, realizing the possibility that Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang might have secretly been in contact, selfishly deleted the call record from Zhou Jingmang's phone.
Episode 3 Recap
Zhou Jingmang reflected on Xiao Teacher Ma's words that writing is a form of self-communication, bringing her pure joy. She felt grateful to Zhang Yang, who had shown her that she didn't need to admire others; she could be her own radiant self. As the National Day holiday approached in 2007, Teacher Shi reminded students to stay safe and study for a quiz after the break, but also to balance work and rest.
Qin Zhen excitedly suggested a movie outing with Shen Yinghui. Zhou Jingmang hesitated, explaining her parents, both teachers, would likely give her homework even on a holiday. Qin Zhen scoffed at Zhou Jingmang's "goody-two-shoes" attitude and advised her to use indirect tactics, recalling how Zhou Jingmang had "clutched Zhang Yang's leg" to defy their strict Teacher Zhou previously. Meanwhile, the basketball coach handed Zhang Yang his team uniform, urging him to perform well in upcoming games.
Later, a classmate reminded Zhang Yang to fill in his contact details for the class address book. Zhang Yang pretended to look for Zhuang Jie's phone number but covertly copied Zhou Jingmang's home landline number instead. Zhou Jingmang, Qin Zhen, and Shen Yinghui enjoyed their movie and then went shopping. Shen Yinghui gave them each a color-changing lip gloss, declaring it their "dorm room color" for future library visits.
Zhou Jingmang, fearing her strict mother's disapproval, decided to carry the lip gloss with her. The next morning, her mother woke her up with a lecture on hard work, comparing her to younger students who woke early to study. Her mother emphasized the low university admission rate in their city, demanding Zhou Jingmang maintain a top 30 rank to get into a good university. She even threatened to make Zhou Jingmang move back home for stricter supervision.
Just then, the phone rang. It was Zhang Yang, calling to invite her to his basketball game that afternoon. Panicked by her mother's presence, Zhou Jingmang quickly hung up, pretending it was the class monitor calling about a group activity. Her mother, believing it was a class event, allowed her to go but warned her to return immediately after the game. Zhou Jingmang eagerly left but soon realized she hadn't asked Zhang Yang for the game's location.
She cycled to school, hoping to find him, but the court was empty. Zhang Yang, having finished his game, returned to school to retrieve some items and found Zhou Jingmang on the basketball court. He confessed he had already played. Zhou Jingmang explained her hasty departure from the phone call and her decision to come to school to "try her luck."
When Zhou Jingmang couldn't find her unlocked bicycle, Zhang Yang offered to give her a ride home, hinting that she wouldn't have found it anyway because he had hidden it as a prank. On the way home, Zhang Yang jokingly complained about her weight. He also asked if she had written any more of her novel, to which she replied her mother's constant supervision left her no time. He reminded her to let him check it regularly.
That evening, during dinner, Zhou Jingmang's parents reiterated their expectations. When Zhou Jingmang optimistically mentioned her dream of becoming a writer and that their family might have an "eminent writer" someday, her mother quickly dismissed it, stressing that her only task was to study hard for a good university and a stable job. She sternly warned Zhou Jingmang against pursuing "unrealistic" endeavors that had nothing to do with her exams, threatening consequences if her grades were poor.
Discouraged, Zhou Jingmang contemplated giving up her novel, even tearing up her manuscript, but a faint memory of Xiao Teacher Ma's encouragement stopped her from discarding it completely. The next day, Zhang Yang continued his prank by placing Zhou Jingmang's bike directly in her path to the cafeteria. Zhou Jingmang, distracted by memorizing vocabulary to earn a new bike from her parents, initially ignored what looked like her old bicycle.
Zhang Yang, observing her from afar, wondered if her eyesight was poor. Later, as she left the cafeteria, the bike was there again. This time, she asked Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui to confirm it was hers. Both agreed it was, marveling at its reappearance after being lost for so long. During a mock exam review, Zhou Jingmang was responsible for distributing test papers. She deliberately raised her voice when calling out names, waking a sleeping Zhang Yang.
He took his paper, glanced at her, and immediately went back to sleep. Zhou Jingmang couldn't shake the memory of Zhang Yang calling her "heavy" and wondered if he had been annoyed. To test this, she asked Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui to give her a ride on their bicycles. Both struggled, confirming her suspicion.
When asked if she felt "ordinary," Qin Zhen quickly reassured her, listing all the "extraordinary" things Zhou Jingmang had done in just two months, like confronting the strict Teacher Zhou and receiving praise from Xiao Teacher Ma. Later, while they were talking, Zhuang Jie accidentally hit Qin Zhen with a basketball, causing her water bottle to spill all over Zhou Jingmang.
Seeing her soaked, Zhang Yang immediately offered his training uniform for her to change into, asking her to wash it before returning it. Zhou Jingmang later pondered Zhang Yang's complex nature in her dormitory; he sometimes teased and bullied her, yet at other times, he displayed unexpected warmth. She confided in Shen Yinghui that she was writing a novel about their high school life but found it challenging to describe Zhang Yang, who seemed to have many facets.
Shen Yinghui, however, found him to be a distinctly cold and independent person. The next morning, Zhang Yang approached Zhou Jingmang, asking for his uniform back, but she apologized, saying she hadn't brought it. Soon after, Xiao Teacher Ma asked Zhang Yang to fetch Zhou Jingmang to her office. Zhou Jingmang, lost in a daydream about publishing her novel and Zhang Yang's admiration, was startled by his appearance. Zhang Yang, noticing her notebook, tried to snatch it.
He pressed her about why Xiao Teacher Ma kept calling her, and Zhou Jingmang, in frustration, finally admitted that Xiao Teacher Ma was guiding her with her writing and even helping her submit entries to Mengya Magazine. On Friday evening, Xiao Teacher Ma, after reviewing Zhou Jingmang's essay, decided to submit it to Mengya Magazine the following week, advising her to refine it further and go home early.
The following Monday, Qin Zhen urgently pulled Zhou Jingmang aside in the bathroom. She revealed that rumors were spreading about Zhou Jingmang and Xiao Teacher Ma, stemming from their late-evening meeting on Friday when it was raining, and Xiao Teacher Ma had lent her a raincoat. Zhou Jingmang was furious, insisting they were only editing her essay. As they returned to the classroom, a group of male students, led by Teng Xiao, taunted Zhou Jingmang.
Zhuang Jie intervened, urging them to stop, but Teng Xiao shoved Zhou Jingmang. Zhuang Jie tried to defend her, leading to a scuffle that was quickly broken up by Teacher Shi. Observing the scene from the classroom door, Zhang Yang felt a pang of regret.
He wished he could fast forward time to a day when he had the ability to protect those he cared about, reflecting on a past moment when Zhou Jingmang had held onto his shirt on his bicycle, making the winding road feel sweet. Returning to 2015, Zhou Jingmang, late for a meeting after a night of drinking, scanned the participant list and was surprised to see Zhang Yang's name. However, the seat where he should have been was empty.
Episode 4 Recap
In Autumn 2007, where a confrontation is brewing. Qin Zhen angrily asks how rumors could spread so wildly, while Shen Yinghui assures Zhou Jingmang not to worry, saying she is there for her. Two boys are heard gossiping about "the big hit," but Shen Yinghui urges Zhou Jingmang to ignore them. When one of the boys bumps into Zhou Jingmang, Zhuang Jie intervenes, accusing the boy, Teng Xiao, of intentionally hitting a girl. Teacher Shi then arrives on the scene.
The story flashes back to three days earlier, a Friday evening. Xiao Teacher Ma was helping Zhou Jingmang refine an article, praising her improved writing and offering to submit it to Mengya Magazine for publication. It was 7 PM, and a heavy rain was pouring outside. Noticing Zhou Jingmang had no umbrella, Xiao Teacher Ma offered his raincoat. Zhou Jingmang initially demurred, but he insisted, saying he had spares.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yang arrived at the Language Teaching and Research Section but found it empty, as everyone had already left due to the late hour and rain. He walked home alone in the downpour. On his way, Yu Huitong and a friend saw him and offered an umbrella, but Zhang Yang politely declined. Yu Huitong and her friend then discussed Zhang Yang, with Yu Huitong recognizing him from middle school as the youngest member of the "Blue Eye" dance group.
They recalled Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang confronting "Director Zhou" during military training, criticizing Zhou Jingmang for clinging to Zhang Yang and seeking attention, calling her a show-off. Soon, the school was abuzz with gossip about Zhou Jingmang and Xiao Teacher Ma. Some students questioned if Zhou Jingmang cheated or if Xiao Teacher Ma showed her favoritism in their private writing sessions. Others, however, defended them, praising Xiao Teacher Ma as a responsible teacher.
Back in the present high school timeline, Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui found Zhou Jingmang looking disheartened by the rumors. They tried to cheer her up, suggesting that people gossip about her because she is exceptional, and urged her not to take it to heart as they dragged her out of the classroom for fresh air. Outside, a group of boys continued to spread the detailed rumors from an online post.
At Zhang Yang's silent prompting, Zhuang Jie deliberately "accidentally" spilled soda on one of the gossiping boys, Teng Xiao, sarcastically remarking that he was too short to be seen. When Teng Xiao and his friend went to the toilet to clean up, Zhuang Jie and Zhang Yang swiftly locked them inside. Later, Shen Yinghui suggested getting something to eat, but Zhou Jingmang declined, preferring to stay and do her homework. Shen Yinghui understood, leaving her alone to cope.
Zhang Yang, meanwhile, called his basketball captain, feigning illness to excuse himself from practice. He then found Zhou Jingmang, who was silently weeping at her desk. Overwhelmed with emotion, Zhou Jingmang confessed that she longed to be invisible, distressed by the harsh words and lack of understanding from her peers. She felt her dream of becoming a writer was slipping away.
Zhang Yang tried to comfort her, suggesting that individuals with strong personalities are often perceived as outsiders and that she should learn to adapt. He offered her a tissue, teasing that she looked "ugly when she cries." He then playfully took her umbrella, pretending he needed it, and insisted she accompany him to the bus stop. There, to thank her for the "umbrella," he invited her to eat mixian.
As they were talking, a passing sprinkler truck splashed water on Zhou Jingmang. Zhang Yang seized the opportunity to tell her not to be upset by the gossip, comparing it to the indiscriminate splashing of water—meaningless and not worth her anger. Back in the dorm, Shen Yinghui and Qin Zhen offered Zhou Jingmang some magazines—a women's fashion magazine and a "Time Music" magazine with S. H. E character cards—to lift her spirits.
Zhou Jingmang felt better, resolving to believe in her own innocence. In the boys' dorm, Zhang Yang dictated Zhou Jingmang's novel from his phone, making Zhuang Jie hand-copy it. Zhuang Jie questioned the plan, worrying that if others disliked the novel, it could backfire. But Zhang Yang confidently asserted that even a single person's affirmation holds power, implying that he and Zhuang Jie were her unwavering supporters.
The next day, Qin Zhen excitedly asked to swap magazines with Zhou Jingmang, eager to read her copy of Mengya. However, they discovered Zhou Jingmang’s magazines had been maliciously torn to shreds. Qin Zhen was furious, but Zhou Jingmang remained outwardly calm. During self-study, Teacher Shi noticed Zhou Jingmang trying to piece together the torn magazine pages. She called Zhou Jingmang out of class and, understanding her distress, gently gave her a new S. H. E magazine.
Teacher Shi advised Zhou Jingmang to ignore the baseless rumors and focus on her studies, as doing well would be the best way to silence her detractors. Zhou Jingmang's hand-copied novel began circulating throughout the school. Even Yu Huitong's roommates were reading it and praising her writing, sparking a mixture of curiosity and resentment in Yu Huitong, who struggled to bring herself to read Zhou Jingmang's work.
During physical education class, Yu Huitong's friends openly ridiculed Zhou Jingmang, but Shen Yinghui bravely stepped in and shoved one of them aside. As a result of their disruptive behavior during PE, Qin Zhen and Zhou Jingmang were sent to the Teacher's Office and reprimanded by Director Zhou. Director Zhou criticized them for their lack of discipline and extended his disapproval to Teacher Shi, blaming her for the class's unruly conduct.
Teacher Shi repeatedly apologized, eventually convincing Director Zhou to release the girls. Afterwards, Teacher Shi offered to treat them to milk tea. Qin Zhen eagerly accepted, but Zhou Jingmang declined, citing unfinished homework, and discreetly wiped away tears as she turned to leave. Zhang Yang later confronted Yu Huitong, accusing her of initiating the rumors about Zhou Jingmang and Xiao Teacher Ma.
He revealed that he had traced the anonymous online post to the same IP address as her personal account, proving her involvement. Yu Huitong admitted to spreading the rumors, justifying her actions by claiming Zhou Jingmang's essays were not good enough for Xiao Teacher Ma's praise, suggesting favoritism. She then questioned Zhang Yang's sudden interest, reminding him of his independent nature in middle school. Zhang Yang insisted she apologize to Zhou Jingmang.
Yu Huitong agreed to do so "at a suitable time" but defiantly declared that she would only do what she wanted, regardless of social consequences, claiming that she and Zhang Yang were alike in their unconventionality. Zhou Jingmang was later found crying alone on the school roof. Zhang Yang joined her. She confided that while she had understood Zhang Yang's earlier analogy about the water, she was still deeply troubled because the issue itself remained unresolved.
Zhang Yang took her hand, promising to resolve the matter and leading her away. He reflected that meeting Zhou Jingmang had profoundly changed him, making him feel a sense of unease and deep care he had never experienced before, compelling him to protect her. Subsequently, the school issued a formal notice condemning Yu Huitong for spreading rumors and causing negative influence, officially ending the incident. The narrative then jumps forward to Autumn 2015.
Zhou Jingmang, now a dedicated "workaholic," was busy with overtime and missed a phone call from Shen Yinghui, who, along with Qin Zhen, wanted to revisit their old high school. Shen Yinghui and Qin Zhen visited Haicheng Secondary School, noting that the bulletin board, still adorned with excellent student work, hadn't changed. They reminisced about Zhou Jingmang's essays being posted there and her popular novel circulating through the school.
Shen Yinghui expressed a longing for the past, envying Zhou Jingmang whose dreams were always unconditionally supported. They hesitated to take photos, fearing Director Zhou, who they heard was still teaching there. Unexpectedly, they encountered Yu Huitong, who revealed she was now a Chinese literature teacher at Haicheng Secondary School.
In her office, Yu Huitong explained that she had returned to her alma mater because some things were simply too hard to let go of, a sentiment she believed her former classmates also shared. They briefly discussed Zhou Jingmang, who couldn't join them due to work commitments. As the evening self-study bell rang, a wave of nostalgic familiarity washed over them.
Episode 5 Recap
Zhang Yang brought Zhou Jingmang to the Broadcasting Room, where he had already switched out old songs for popular ones, including "Invisible Wings." He then tested her reflexes by pointing to words in a brochure, instructing her to read them quickly. Unbeknownst to Zhou Jingmang, he had secretly turned on the microphone, causing her to inadvertently broadcast "Zhou Jingmang idolizes Zhang Yang" to the entire school. The students erupted in excitement, while Zhou Jingmang was furious, feeling tricked.
Zhang Yang explained that this was a strategic move, a "fight to the death to survive" tactic, to introduce a new topic that would quickly overshadow the old rumors about her and the teacher. He then gave her a new lip balm, suggesting a new look as a fresh start, just as she had written in her novel.
The student who allowed Zhang Yang to use the Broadcasting Room, Wang Miao, was upset, telling Zhang Yang that the Broadcasting Room teacher was going to give him a demerit. Wang Miao felt that merely receiving concert tickets was not enough compensation for the risk. He then proposed a condition: Zhang Yang must obtain the latter half of Zhou Jingmang's novel for him. Zhang Yang used a borrowed phone to record Wang Miao's request.
Later, Zhang Yang played this recording for Zhou Jingmang, explaining that her novel was becoming popular throughout their grade and that this was genuine feedback, affirming her dream of becoming a novelist was achievable. Zhou Jingmang, while appreciative, did not explicitly show her emotions. She took the opportunity to return the cleaned training uniform Zhang Yang had lent her. Meanwhile, Director Zhou, the disciplinary teacher, discussed Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang's behavior with their class teacher, Teacher Shi.
Director Zhou insisted on issuing a public criticism at the weekly student assembly, stating that whether the incident would be recorded in their permanent files would depend on their future conduct. Teacher Shi argued that it was just children fooling around and that a demerit would unfairly tarnish their records for life, but Director Zhou was firm, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.
Subsequently, an Intensive Study Class was formed, and Zhou Jingmang, Shen Yinghui, and Ling Chen were selected from their class for achieving top ranks. Zhou Jingmang, who placed 29th, was relieved to be with her friends and not alone. Yu Huitong was also selected for the same class. During the Intensive Study Class, Yu Huitong directly approached Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui, apologizing for her past actions and admitting she had wrongly blamed Zhou Jingmang.
She expressed that she had read Zhou Jingmang's novel and found it interesting, and that she wished to be friends with them. Later, Yu Huitong sought them out again, persistently asking if they had accepted her apology. Since her determined demeanor made it difficult to refuse, Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui eventually accepted, and Yu Huitong treated them to milk tea.
Yu Huitong then posted a group photo online with the caption "Turning enmity into friendship, I've made a new friend," which Zhang Yang saw. Annoyed, he silently cursed Zhou Jingmang for being "brainless." He later found Zhou Jingmang and pulled her aside, warning her to stay away from Yu Huitong because her apology was not sincere. Zhou Jingmang was puzzled by his words.
Yu Huitong, having learned about Zhou Jingmang's upcoming birthday from Shen Yinghui (who was preparing a gift for Zhou Jingmang), bought Zhou Jingmang a lipstick similar to one Shen Yinghui used and presented it to her as an early birthday gift during the Intensive Study Class. Zhang Yang, observing this, grew even angrier. He confronted Zhou Jingmang, demanding to know why she was not using the lip balm "he" had given her.
Feeling vexed by his accusatory tone, Zhou Jingmang kept the phone number she had just obtained to herself, not giving it to him. Upon returning home, Zhou Jingmang's mother surprised her with a new cellphone as a birthday gift, but Zhou Jingmang seemed less than thrilled. Later, while eating, Zhou Jingmang received a call from Qin Zhen, inquiring about English homework.
Her parents immediately assumed Qin Zhen was a poor student and warned Zhou Jingmang to limit her interactions with her. Zhou Jingmang's mother then noticed Zhou Jingmang wearing makeup in a photo on her new phone's screensaver. Concerned by what she perceived as frequent issues since Zhou Jingmang started living at school, her mother decided she needed to have a serious talk with her daughter that night.
However, her father advised against it without proof, prompting her mother to resolve to find concrete evidence first. Zhang Yang left a message on the floor for Zhou Jingmang, asking her to meet him on the rooftop at noon. Yu Huitong happened to see Zhou Jingmang heading there and overheard their conversation from the stairwell. Zhou Jingmang apologized to Zhang Yang for her previous behavior regarding his gift, but he assured her he was not upset about that.
He explained that he wasn't angry about how she treated his gift, but rather something else. Zhou Jingmang expressed her desire to truly understand him to accurately portray his character in her novel and to learn about his dreams. Watching Zhou Jingmang smile brightly in the wind, Zhang Yang had an internal thought: he realized all his efforts to support her were worthwhile, and he wished that all her dreams would be fulfilled.
As they talked, Yu Huitong, fueled by jealousy, deliberately informed Director Zhou about their rooftop meeting. Director Zhou then arrived, catching Zhang Yang gently touching Zhou Jingmang's head. In the present day of 2015, Yu Huitong's mother arranged a blind date for her after work. To Yu Huitong's surprise, her date turned out to be Zhang Yang, whom she hadn't seen in a long time.
Episode 6 Recap
Yu Hui Tong was seen by Teacher Zhou looking up at the rooftop. When questioned, she revealed that Zhou Jingmang had gone up there and she heard a boy's voice. Teacher Zhou quickly went to the roof and caught Zhou Jingmang and Zhang Yang "in the act." Assuming they were romantically involved, he became furious, declaring their behavior unacceptable, especially after the previous incident at the broadcasting station.
He ignored Zhou Jingmang's attempts to explain, insisting on contacting their parents for a serious discussion. Zhou Jingmang felt utterly helpless in the situation. While Zhou Jingmang was at school, her parents accessed her room, unlocking her drawer and discovering a lip gloss. Zhou Jingmang’s mother later called Yu Hui Tong, who confirmed she had given the lip gloss to Zhou Jingmang. Called to the school, Zhou Jingmang's mother apologized to Teacher Zhou.
Zhou Jingmang was called out of class in front of her peers, fueling widespread gossip. Upon returning home, Zhou Jingmang's mother expressed remorse for doubting her and affirmed her trust. However, she concluded that living in the dorms was negatively affecting Zhou Jingmang's studies and mandated that she become a day student for the rest of the semester, effective the following week. Zhang Yang confronted Yu Hui Tong, suspecting her involvement in the incident.
He handed her a stack of review books, advising her to refer to them for academic questions instead of Zhou Jingmang. Yu Hui Tong insisted they were friends, but Zhang Yang saw through her, stating that Zhou Jingmang genuinely considered her a friend and warning Yu Hui Tong against hurting her.
Yu Hui Tong retorted that Zhou Jingmang simply desired a peaceful high school experience and would, after her parents' intervention, lose the courage to remain friends with Zhang Yang, predicting her withdrawal. The Christmas season arrived, and Zhou Jingmang's mother allowed her to stay in the dormitories for one night to complete a blackboard newspaper, much to Qin Zhen's excitement. While out buying milk tea for her friends, Zhou Jingmang unexpectedly encountered Zhang Yang.
Their interactions had become noticeably sparse since her parents were summoned to school, and Zhou Jingmang felt hesitant to face him. Zhang Yang confronted her, asking why she had been avoiding him, noting her lowered gaze and silence whenever he was near. He reminded her of how he helped resolve the rumors involving Teacher Xiao Ma and questioned if this was her way of showing gratitude.
Zhou Jingmang expressed her frustration, explaining that his actions constantly led to trouble with classmates, teachers, and parents, leaving her no option but to retreat. Zhang Yang then directly asked if she disliked being the subject of gossip when associated with him. Zhou Jingmang admitted her desire for a peaceful and stable high school life, aspiring to study hard, get into a good university, and make her parents and teachers proud.
She pleaded with Zhang Yang to stop disrupting her life with "bombs," as she couldn't bear the consequences. Zhang Yang, visibly disheartened, acknowledged her words. Although Zhou Jingmang spoke these words, she secretly admired Zhang Yang and realized his growing importance in her heart.
However, her ingrained tendency to avoid confrontation prevented her from defying her parents and teachers for him, leaving her with a profound sense of sadness and the feeling that her words were contrary to her true feelings. That evening, a despondent Zhou Jingmang bought a large quantity of spicy sticks. As she consumed them, she cried profusely, distressing Shen Yinghui and Qin Zhen.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yang, deeply affected by Zhou Jingmang's statements, reflected on Yu Hui Tong's earlier prediction that Zhou Jingmang, after the parental involvement, would lack the courage to even remain friends with him. He found the situation deeply ironic, confirming Yu Hui Tong's insight. The next morning, Qin Zhen and her friends were playfully pushing each other with their newly bought milk tea when Qin Zhen accidentally spilled it on Ling Chen.
Observing his reaction, Qin Zhen noticed his jacket appeared to be a women's style. Aware of Ling Chen's difficult family circumstances, she decided to buy him a new jacket as compensation. Later, Yu Hui Tong came to Zhou Jingmang's class, intending to give street dance finals competition tickets to Zhang Yang through Zhou Jingmang, knowing his interest in dance.
Zhang Yang, suspicious of Yu Hui Tong's motives, pulled her aside for a private conversation, despite Zhou Jingmang's attempts to defend Yu Hui Tong as a friend. Zhou Jingmang, feeling uneasy, secretly followed and overheard Yu Hui Tong explaining that she wanted to share the event with Zhang Yang because they had common interests, while criticizing Zhou Jingmang for her hesitation in expressing her feelings. During a P. E.
class, Zhang Yang, still upset after hearing Zhou Jingmang declare they were no longer friends, angrily crumpled the two street dance tickets from Yu Hui Tong and discarded them near a trash can. Zhou Jingmang witnessed this act. After class, when the area was clear, she quietly retrieved the tickets. When her friends asked why Yu Hui Tong had been looking for both her and Zhang Yang, she simply replied it was nothing.
Instead of keeping them, she later threw them into a different trash can. Back home, Zhou Jingmang drank the bitter medicine her mother had prepared, intending to study vocabulary. She then received a phone call from Zhang Yang, who instructed her to go to the alley entrance near her house. Lying to her mother that she was retrieving forgotten homework from a friend, Zhou Jingmang hurried to the alley.
Following a series of strategically placed arrows, she found a beautifully wrapped gift box. Inside, she discovered a warm scarf, a delicate crystal ball, and a handwritten note from Zhang Yang. The note served as an apology for the trouble he caused her with the broadcasting station prank. Reading his words, the gloom that had overshadowed Zhou Jingmang for days lifted, and she smiled joyfully, clutching the gifts. However, in her excitement, she accidentally stumbled.
In 2015, years later, Zhou Jingmang found herself working late, preparing a meeting report. Realizing she lacked information about the collaborating Zhengge Law Firm, she called her colleague, Sister Xiao Ling, to obtain their phone number. Despite getting the number, she couldn't reach anyone at the firm. Deciding to visit in person, she traveled to the address provided on the business card. It was already late when she arrived at the firm.
Peering through the glass window, she saw a man whose profile strongly resembled Zhang Yang. She froze, stunned. After years of searching for him, she instinctively turned away the moment he began to turn his head. Zhang Yang, however, caught a glimpse of her. He tapped on the window to get her attention, and when she finally turned back, he paused, a look of disbelief on his face, before tentatively calling out, "Zhou Jing Mang?"
Episode 7 Recap
Zhou Jingmang arrived at school cheerfully, wearing the cream scarf Zhang Yang had given her. Her friend Qin Zhen commented on the scarf, saying it made Zhou Jingmang look "like a wax figure" and that "you need to be really pale to be able to pull off a cream scarf," suggesting Shen Yinghui might suit it better. Qin Zhen even offered to switch scarves with her.
However, Zhou Jingmang insisted she liked this one, falsely claiming she bought it herself, before hurrying off to class. In class, the monitor, Ling Chen, reported that everyone was present except Zhang Yang. Zhuang Jie informed Teacher Shi that Zhang Yang had a "quite serious" cold and asked for a day off for him. Zhou Jingmang, worried, waited outside the boy's restroom to ask Zhuang Jie about Zhang Yang.
Zhuang Jie exaggerated Zhang Yang's condition, claiming he "can't speak and he has a fever," couldn't get out of bed, and would "need at least half a month to recover." When asked if she wanted to visit him, Zhou Jingmang nervously declined and also asked Zhuang Jie not to convey her worries, insisting she was "just asking." In reality, Zhang Yang was performing in a street dance competition.
Zhuang Jie later called Zhang Yang to tell him that Zhou Jingmang was "so flustered" and "really cares about you" when she heard he was sick. Zhang Yang smiled, instructing Zhuang Jie to maintain the lie until his performance was over. After his performance, a manager from Beijing Tong Rui Culture approached Zhang Yang, praising his performance and stating his "overall conditions are very ideal."
She offered him a chance to become a trainee in Beijing, emphasizing that with his dance skills, he "will be able to debut very quickly" after "fully shut-in" training. Zhang Yang took her business card but seemed hesitant about going to Beijing. When Zhang Yang returned to school, Zhou Jingmang consciously wore the scarf, and he noticed her from behind, smiling to himself.
Qin Zhen playfully teased Zhou Jingmang about secretly beautifying herself because Zhuang Jie told her Zhang Yang would be back. She also commented on Zhou Jingmang wearing a scarf in class, asking if she wasn't hot. Teacher Shi announced that all students must participate in the school anniversary performance auditions. Zhou Jingmang was distressed, telling Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui that she "can't do much else" besides studying and had "never learnt anything else."
Qin Zhen suggested doing stand-up comedy with her, but Zhou Jingmang didn't think she was funny. Shen Yinghui announced she would perform ballet. Later, during a class meeting, Shen Yinghui volunteered her ballet act, welcoming others to join. Zhang Yang then raised his hand, not to join Shen Yinghui, but to propose a new act: street dance. He specified he needed partners with "basic dancing skill and an ability to appreciate dance."
Unexpectedly, Shen Yinghui changed her mind, stating that "Ballet requires advanced skills and methods. It is not suitable for us to perform together," but she had "learned street dance for a while before," and offered to help Zhang Yang organize the performance. Zhou Jingmang wanted to join a dance group. Outside the school, Zhang Yang teased Zhou Jingmang about a face injury from clumsiness, then squatted down to tie her shoelaces and adjust her scarf.
He then invited her to join his dance team, clarifying that he wouldn't make her dance, given her supposed clumsiness and lack of dance skills. Instead, he wanted her to write a poem, suggesting the title "Fearless Youth," which he would then transform into a rap song for their dance music, making the performance more innovative. Zhou Jingmang, amazed by his versatile talents, eagerly accepted, promising to write well.
She later shared this news with Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui at lunch, who were happy for her. Shen Yinghui, however, secretly harbored feelings for Zhang Yang, hoping that by participating in his dream, no matter how small the chances, she could become a part of his world. Shen Yinghui brought Zhou Jingmang to the dance studio for practice.
Due to the lack of dancers in their class, Zhang Yang had arranged for the performance to be a cross-class collaboration, bringing in skilled dancers from other classes. One of these dancers was Li Yu Xiang, whom Zhou Jingmang recognized from seeing him dance on the playground.
Li Yu Xiang recognized Zhou Jingmang immediately from an article she wrote on the school bulletin board and openly expressed his admiration for her, suggesting they were fated to meet and wanting to treat her to a meal. Zhang Yang entered the room while Li Yu Xiang was talking to Zhou Jingmang, looking displeased. Zhou Jingmang quickly clarified to Zhang Yang that she had "just met" Li Yu Xiang.
Zhang Yang announced that Zhou Jingmang would write a rap, and he would compose the music for their performance. Zhou Jingmang introduced herself to the group, promising to "work hard" and not to "disappoint you all," which Zhang Yang found "quite funny." During practice, Li Yu Xiang encouraged Zhou Jingmang to try some simple dance moves, even offering to teach her. Zhang Yang intervened, telling Li Yu Xiang, "Dancing is not her thing.
Just let her write properly," and reminded everyone to "start practicing." Later, Li Yu Xiang suggested to Zhou Jingmang that he could perform specific moves for her if she needed inspiration for her lyrics. Zhang Yang again interjected, directing Li Yu Xiang to discuss team structure adjustments for the rap song with Shen Yinghui. Li Yu Xiang then asked Zhou Jingmang if her lyrics were ready, but Zhang Yang stated he would give them to him once she finished.
Feeling a mix of inspiration and awkwardness, Zhou Jingmang decided to leave to write. Zhang Yang instructed her not to be lazy and to finish writing early, while Li Yu Xiang encouraged her not to be afraid of Zhang Yang and to write slowly. Shen Yinghui offered to stay behind with Zhang Yang to practice some moves, asking him for help. As Zhou Jingmang left, Zhang Yang watched her go.
He realized that when other people started entering Zhou Jingmang's world, he began to understand his youthful affection. He reflected that a teenage crush often involves the conflict of worrying that the person knows your feelings, but also worrying that they don't, leading to a situation where the person might never realize how many times you've secretly watched them from a hidden corner.
In 2015, Zhou Jingmang, in an urgent work situation, was searching for a specific law firm involved in a Rui Fang company project concerning an internal human resources dispute. She located the firm and went there in person. There, she reunited with Zhang Yang, who worked at the firm and had previously handled documentation for the same project. Zhou Jingmang, absorbed in her work, quickly retrieved the necessary meeting notes from him, barely acknowledging their past connection.
Meanwhile, Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui were at their old school, reminiscing about how much it had changed and their past experiences, from Qin Zhen getting caught with her phone to Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang’s well-known incident. They talked about how memories, even difficult ones, become precious over time. Qin Zhen received a phone call and stepped away. Back at the firm, Zhou Jingmang finished her work. Zhang Yang brought her a glass of water, struggling to find words.
He eventually commented, "You. . . you are quite capable of working," which Zhou Jingmang pointed out he had also said about her studying in the past. Frustrated by his lack of a true apology or explanation for his past actions, Zhou Jingmang asked, "Zhang Yang, isn't there anything you want to say to me?" When he remained silent, she angrily stomped on his foot and declared, "I hate you," before storming out, leaving Zhang Yang stunned.
Episode 8 Recap
In 2007, winter, Li Yu Xiang hurried after Zhou Jingmang, who was running ahead, and took her backpack. He offered to walk her back to the dorms, as it was getting dark. Zhou Jingmang initially declined, explaining she wasn't accustomed to walking with boys. Li Yu Xiang playfully asked if she meant boys in general or just him, then clarified he was joking.
He expressed admiration for her writing and personality, stating he eagerly awaited the lyrics she was writing, and asked if they could be friends. Meanwhile, in the dance room, Zhang Yang was guiding Shen Yinghui through dance moves, but his mind seemed elsewhere due to Zhou Jingmang and Li Yu Xiang leaving. Shen Yinghui asked for confirmation on a move, and Zhang Yang, after affirming it, encouraged her to practice more.
He then abruptly ended the session, noting how late it was and how hard she had worked. He suggested buying fruit for everyone and asked Shen Yinghui to pick some. At the fruit stand, Shen Yinghui opted for apples, but Zhang Yang also bought a large quantity of mangoes, enough for ten people.
He gave the entire bag of mangoes to Shen Yinghui, telling her to take it back to her dorm for everyone, clearly implying they were for Zhou Jingmang, a fact Shen Yinghui quickly deduced. Upon returning to her dorm, Zhou Jingmang met Qin Zhen, who was carrying a mysterious purple bag. Qin Zhen revealed she was knitting gloves for Ling Chen as an apology for having dirtied his clothes. Zhou Jingmang, feeling fatigued, decided to sleep without reviewing her vocabulary.
She couldn't help but compare herself to Shen Yinghui, who seemed effortlessly talented in both ballet and street dance, leading her to feel inadequate and out of place. Qin Zhen mistakenly thought Zhou Jingmang’s low spirits were due to Zhang Yang giving mangoes to Shen Yinghui. The next day, during a vocabulary dictation, Zhou Jingmang struggled to recall words and was consequently assigned by Teacher Zhou to copy them thirty times.
That same morning, Zhang Yang and Zhuang Jie arrived late to class and were each ordered to write a thousand-word self-reflection by Teacher Zhou, much to Qin Zhen's annoyance, as Zhuang Jie had stood her up for their morning run. Teacher Zhou also assigned Zhang Yang to copy words. Zhang Yang then insisted that Zhou Jingmang come to the dance studio with him to complete her punishment, framing it as a contribution to their performance.
Shen Yinghui offered to help Zhang Yang, but he declined, maintaining that Zhou Jingmang’s presence was crucial for the program. He then took her notebook, compelling her to follow. During a break in dance practice, Zhang Yang offered Zhou Jingmang mangoes, suggesting they would help refresh her mind to focus on their shared assignment. Zhou Jingmang tried to decline.
Li Yu Xiang then intervened, retrieving Zhou Jingmang's backpack that Zhang Yang had playfully placed out of her reach, and told Zhang Yang to let her return to the dorm. Zhang Yang, however, insisted that there were still forty minutes before the dorms closed and he needed to supervise Zhou Jingmang as she wrote her lyrics, telling Li Yu Xiang to leave first. As Zhou Jingmang wrote, Zhang Yang peeled mangoes for her.
When she pointed out his previous claim of disliking mangoes, he retorted, "My name is Zhou Jing Mang, why wouldn't I like eating mangoes?" Back in his dorm, Zhang Yang was consumed by Zhou Jingmang's lyrics, spending hours humming and choreographing a dance for them. He forced a weary Zhuang Jie to watch him practice, despite Zhuang Jie reminding him of his bet with Qin Zhen to run the next morning.
That night, Zhou Jingmang had a distressing nightmare, feeling inferior as Zhang Yang praised Shen Yinghui's graceful ballet and street dance skills, while dismissing Zhou Jingmang as "ugly and dumb," "useless," and less capable than even Yu Hui Tong. Awakened by Shen Yinghui, Zhou Jingmang confessed her feelings of uselessness and lack of talent, contrasting herself with Shen Yinghui's multifaceted abilities.
Shen Yinghui gently reassured her that her own skills were the result of immense effort and highlighted Zhang Yang's deep passion for dance. Qin Zhen then entered, reminding them both of her morning bet with Zhuang Jie. The following day, at the dance studio, Li Yu Xiang affectionately gave Zhou Jingmang the nickname "Xiao Mango," noting its resemblance to her name and finding it charming, though Zhou Jingmang preferred to be called by her full name.
Zhang Yang then presented his newly produced music, featuring Zhou Jingmang's lyrics, which he performed with a rap and a dance. Zhou Jingmang was deeply moved and impressed by his talent. Li Yu Xiang proposed incorporating a distinct street dance segment into the overall performance just for Zhou Jingmang, emphasizing her potential for growth despite any perceived clumsiness. Zhang Yang agreed to the idea, but firmly asserted he would be the one to choreograph that specific dance.
Later, Zhuang Jie fulfilled his side of the bet with Qin Zhen, loudly proclaiming "I am a pig!" in a prominent area, drawing widespread laughter from the surrounding school buildings. Qin Zhen later found a photo of the incident in her dorm, which greatly amused her. Zhou Jingmang then informed Qin Zhen about her unexpected new role in the dance performance. Qin Zhen was surprised and expressed skepticism about the casual selection process for such a significant show.
Zhou Jingmang explained that Li Yu Xiang had suggested it, seeing her perceived lack of coordination as "significant room for improvement," and had even offered to choreograph a special dance for her. Qin Zhen, however, voiced a warning, speculating that Li Yu Xiang might harbor ulterior motives and was possibly seeing Zhou Jingmang through a "thick filter." On her way to the dance studio the next day, Zhou Jingmang was stopped by Li Yu Xiang, who playfully intercepted her.
He presented her with knee pads, calling them a "magic weapon" to prevent her from crying in pain and embarrassing herself in front of Zhang Yang. He insisted on accompanying her to teach her. Zhang Yang and Shen Yinghui soon arrived at the dance studio, only to witness Li Yu Xiang intimately guiding Zhou Jingmang through dance moves.
This sight stung Zhang Yang, prompting an internal monologue about his desire to draw Zhou Jingmang into his world and be the sole influence on her thoughts, actions, and aspirations, recognizing his jealousy when others began to shape her experiences. In the present year, 2015, Zhou Jingmang met with Shen Yinghui and confided that she had seen Zhang Yang, but he seemed changed. Shen Yinghui offered to investigate Zhang Yang's whereabouts.
She called Zhou Jingmang from Zhang Yang's company, informing her that he had taken urgent leave due to family matters and his return date was uncertain. During the call, Shen Yinghui suddenly fell silent because she unexpectedly saw Zhang Yang with Yu Hui Tong. Disturbed, Zhou Jingmang urgently requested time off from a colleague and rushed to the law firm where Zhang Yang worked.
Episode 9 Recap
Zhang Yang secured a rental apartment, explaining over the phone to his mother that he needed to move out to avoid disturbing his dormmates and would cover all expenses himself, regardless of his father's disapproval. Shen Yinghui, present during the call, subtly understood the nature of the conversation.
Shen Yinghui later informed Zhou Jingmang that Zhang Yang's father was invited to the school's gala, a fact that put immense pressure on Zhang Yang, particularly as his father was a powerful businessman frequently invited to sponsor school events. During a dance practice session, Zhang Yang's mood soured upon seeing Li Yu Xiang giving close guidance to Zhou Jingmang. When the team assembled, Shen Yinghui, prompted by Zhang Yang, introduced her new ballet segment and the required formation changes.
However, Zhang Yang soon lashed out at Zhou Jingmang, criticizing her for being distracted and making mistakes. He accused her of forgetting the ending pose and warned that her lack of seriousness could ruin the entire performance, expressing profound disappointment in her attitude. After the strained practice, Shen Yinghui comforted a disheartened Zhou Jingmang, attributing Zhang Yang's harshness to the immense pressure from his father's impending visit.
Zhou Jingmang was surprised by Shen Yinghui's extensive knowledge of Zhang Yang's personal life, feeling she knew very little herself. Zhou Jingmang, overwhelmed, decided to leave. Li Yu Xiang followed her, revealing that her motivation for joining the dance team was Zhang Yang, not a love for dance itself. He also pointed out that her sudden departure was due to Zhang Yang's critical attitude, not a fear of being a burden.
Li Yu Xiang assured her that Zhang Yang was equally strict with everyone during practice. Zhou Jingmang, whose feelings were exposed by Li Yu Xiang's accurate assessment, left without a word, her emotions growing more complicated that night as she reflected on his words. That night, Shen Yinghui found Zhang Yang still practicing. She cautiously asked if he had been too harsh on Zhou Jingmang and mentioned seeing him rent an apartment, hinting at her concern.
Zhang Yang abruptly cut her off, telling her to mind her own business and forbidding her from discussing his private matters with Zhou Jingmang. The next morning, Zhou Jingmang attempted to tell Zhang Yang in class that she wanted to quit the street dance group, believing her poor skills would hinder the team. Zhang Yang, however, feigned sleep, ignoring her pleas, and she reluctantly gave up.
Later, on the basketball court, Zhuang Jie playfully teased Zhang Yang, claiming he spent the previous night contemplating how to apologize to Zhou Jingmang. Zhuang Jie joked about Zhang Yang's earlier stern words regarding dance being a serious matter, yet still allowing the "uncoordinated" Zhou Jingmang to participate and even choreographing for her. Zhang Yang dismissed the teasing, calling Zhou Jingmang an "idiot" for wanting to quit.
After school, Zhang Yang, still refusing to accept her resignation, pulled Zhou Jingmang back to the dance studio. He promised to teach her until she mastered the moves and showed her a simplified version of her part. Despite the easier choreography, Zhou Jingmang struggled, frustrating Zhang Yang, who visibly took deep breaths to maintain his composure and patiently re-taught her.
He informed her that she would participate in the preliminary selection for the school ceremony the following day, suggesting her "unique" clumsiness might even become a memorable highlight. During the preliminary selections, various performances, including a "Three phrases and a half" skit and a "Suzhou English" stand-up comedy, were presented. Zhou Jingmang joined her street dance group on stage, and their performance was met with applause.
Afterwards, Zhang Yang praised their overall success but pointed out that Zhou Jingmang's rhythm still didn't quite sync with the group, suggesting they needed a strategy to divert audience attention during her segment. He invited everyone to celebrate with a meal. Zhou Jingmang declined, citing homework, and instead returned to the dance studio for solitary practice. Exhausted, Zhou Jingmang eventually fell asleep in the studio.
She awoke to darkness, realizing the door was locked from the outside and her phone had died, leaving her trapped and distressed. Zhang Yang, noticing her absence from the dorms, called her phone, which was off, and then came to the studio. Using a spare key he had acquired for the team's late practices, he opened the door. However, instead of comforting her, he immediately chastised her for being "stupid" and getting locked in.
Zhou Jingmang, already on the verge of tears, pushed him away in anger. She tearfully declared that she was not "fooling around" but earnestly practicing for everyone, including him. She confessed to overhearing his earlier comments about needing to "solve her problem" (distract the audience) and indignantly asked if he truly thought she was just a "stupid" burden who only caused trouble.
Feeling remorseful, Zhang Yang tried to lift her spirits by taking her to the basketball court to teach her how to shoot. Zhou Jingmang initially resisted, interpreting his actions as another attempt to make her look foolish. Patiently, Zhang Yang guided her and retrieved the ball himself. When she expressed her exhaustion and desire to return, he finally apologized for his harshness earlier and for misjudging her efforts that night.
Surprised by his rare apology, Zhou Jingmang agreed to try shooting again. Zhang Yang then shared a philosophical thought, explaining that dreaming is easy, but achieving dreams is challenging, akin to basketball where consistent effort eventually leads to success. He encouraged her that her hard work in dance would also eventually pay off.
Zhou Jingmang playfully asked if he wanted her to include his profound words in her novel and then inquired about his own dreams and his nervousness regarding his father's visit. He confirmed his father was coming but promised to reveal his dreams only when she published her article. He then jokingly told her to adopt a "bad attitude" towards anyone who tried to approach her in the future.
On the day of the school ceremony, as the street dance team prepared, Shen Yinghui meticulously helped Zhou Jingmang style her short hair. As Zhou Jingmang ascended the stairs to the stage, Zhang Yang was visibly struck by her distinct appearance, experiencing a sudden flutter in his heart.
A voiceover from Zhang Yang expressed profound gratitude for having met her, for the feeling of being unconditionally chosen and trusted, and for the valuable lessons he wholeheartedly imparted, which he hoped she would cherish. Despite the ongoing challenge of her uncoordinated movements, Zhou Jingmang silently vowed to perform her best. Five years later, in 2015, Zhou Jingmang, worried that Zhang Yang might have disappeared again, called Shen Yinghui from a taxi en route to Chang Xiang Building.
Shen Yinghui, however, lied, claiming her phone had lost signal and she had already left work, urging Zhou Jingmang not to worry and to return to her own job. In reality, Shen Yinghui was sitting opposite Zhang Yang and Yu Hui Tong. Visibly upset, Shen Yinghui confronted them, stating she had not told Zhou Jingmang about their encounter and demanded an explanation. Yu Hui Tong insisted their meeting was a mere coincidence.
Zhang Yang remained silent about his sudden departure years ago, asserting that they were all grown up and there was no need to revisit the past or maintain any connection. He explicitly stated they should all pretend they had never met and that he would treat them as strangers if they ever sought him out. As Shen Yinghui left the meeting, an internal monologue revealed her enduring feelings for Zhang Yang and her understanding that some relationships are simply destined for regret.
Episode 10 Recap
The Haicheng Secondary School's 50th-anniversary celebration was underway. Shen Yinghui brought Zhou Jingmang, in a new outfit she had chosen for her, before everyone, immediately captivating their attention, including Zhang Yang, who found himself drawn to her transformed appearance. Before their hip-hop performance, Zhang Yang received an unanswered call and a message on his phone, but he chose to focus on the stage.
During their performance, Shen Yinghui began with a brief ballet solo before transitioning into the dynamic hip-hop routine. Zhou Jingmang performed exceptionally well, blending seamlessly with the dance, and the lyrics she penned contributed to a perfect show. Teacher Shi noted that Zhou Jingmang wrote the lyrics, leading Teacher Zhou to revise his opinion of her.
He particularly liked the line "No regrets in youth, no fear in youth" and admitted he had misjudged her previously, having believed she was just trying to attract attention. As they exited the stage, Zhou Jingmang unfortunately stumbled and fell, drawing scoffs from the audience. Zhang Yang, demonstrating quick thinking, immediately grabbed a microphone and began singing "Invisible Wings," skillfully alleviating her embarrassment.
Their hip-hop routine secured first place, and Zhang Yang announced he would treat everyone to a celebratory meal that evening. Yu Hui Tong approached Zhang Yang with flowers to congratulate him, but he politely declined, returning them to her. Undeterred, Yu Hui Tong thanked him for returning the flowers, muttering to herself.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yang was torn about whether to pursue a rare trainee opportunity that would require him to move to Beijing for a fully enclosed training program, making him reluctant to leave behind his current life and friends. Later, at their celebration meal, Zhuang Jie prepared a special drink called "No Fears in Youth." Zhou Jingmang expressed a desire to try it, but Zhang Yang firmly prevented her.
Zhang Yang then stepped out to take a call from his agent, who was keen on signing him. He explained that he still needed more time to consider the offer, promising a reply after the Spring Festival break. He was contemplating whether pursuing his dream in Beijing meant sacrificing everything from his current high school life. Separately, in the restroom, Zhang Yang encountered Li Yuxiang and told him pointedly that Zhou Jingmang would not like him.
The group was having such a good time that they misjudged the hour, realizing they only had fifteen minutes before the school gates and dorms closed. They rushed back, but the school was already locked. Deciding to climb a nearby fence, they were caught in the act by Xiao Teacher Ma. Instead of reporting them to the school, Xiao Teacher Ma arranged for the dorm managers to allow them back in, stating he would personally handle the punishment.
He instructed them to return to their dorms and meet him in his office the next day. The next day, his unified punishment for everyone was a "complete general practice test set." Xiao Teacher Ma also praised Zhou Jingmang for her well-written lyrics and dancing, highlighting the beauty of working towards a goal with like-minded friends, but reminded her to prioritize her studies with the final exams approaching.
Zhou Jingmang persistently tried to get Zhang Yang to start working on the test papers, urging him to focus on studying. Zhang Yang, however, found various excuses, claiming he was too busy and wouldn't be able to start until the following week. At that moment, Ling Chen suddenly suffered a severe nosebleed that wouldn't stop. Shen Yinghui, concerned, suggested taking him to a hospital, mentioning her parents were doctors and that an uncontrollable nosebleed could be serious.
Ling Chen agreed to go to her parents' hospital. Qin Zhen observed Ling Chen smiling for the first time, noting his unexpected cheerfulness even with a bloody nose, which made her realize Ling Chen might have stronger feelings for Shen Yinghui than for her. She also mused that her knitted gloves might only be accepted by Ling Chen if delivered by Shen Yinghui. Shen Yinghui and Ling Chen took a taxi to the nearby Second Affiliated Hospital to save time.
Feeling that Zhang Yang was merely being evasive about the test papers, Zhou Jingmang sought out Zhuang Jie, offering him a chicken drumstick in exchange for information. After making Zhou Jingmang promise not to reveal what he was about to say to anyone else, Zhuang Jie explained Zhang Yang's real situation. He revealed that Zhang Yang had always loved street dance, but his traditional father disapproved, viewing it as improper.
In middle school, Zhang Yang secretly used money his mother gave him for tuition to pay for dance lessons. His father discovered this after he graduated from middle school and, in a fit of rage, kicked him out. As Zhang Yang refused to yield, he moved out and now relies on earning money through performances to support his dancing.
With rising dance expenses, he had taken on more gigs, which was why he was so busy and had rented a place to live. Moved by Zhang Yang's struggle, Zhou Jingmang prepared a thoughtful bento box for him, including the chicken drumstick she had given Zhuang Jie. She left it for him with a note that read: "Good luck with your dream! Good luck as well on your tests! The drumstick is a plus."
Zhang Yang, upon waking, found the bento and the note, feeling deeply touched. As the school break approached, Zhou Jingmang, Shen Yinghui, and their friends discussed their holiday plans. Some mentioned boring homework, others strict ballet practice, while one friend excitedly described a family vacation with sleeping in, scenic photos, and barbecues. Zhou Jingmang wanted to ask Zhang Yang about his plans.
She rehearsed her approach outside his dorm, but when she finally saw him, she awkwardly asked if he read novels. She handed him a novel she had recently written. Zhang Yang accepted it and, in return, gave her a carefully packaged box of chocolates, though he claimed they were a gift from someone else and that he didn't like sweets. Despite his seemingly nonchalant attitude, Zhou Jingmang was delighted. In 2015, a significant jump in time occurred.
Zhuang Jie and Qin Zhen, who were together, were planning a dinner to announce their relationship to Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang. Qin Zhen joked that Zhuang Jie was preparing to get formally and legally married and wanted a grand reveal. Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang arrived. While talking, Shen Yinghui revealed that she had recently seen Zhang Yang working at a law firm, where they crossed paths due to a company collaboration.
Zhou Jingmang then clarified that she had deliberately gone to his firm to find out about him and had seen him there, noting he was with Yu Hui Tong. She added that they, along with Zhang Yang, had gone to a cafe to talk, and it seemed like a chance encounter between Zhang Yang and Yu Hui Tong. Zhou Jingmang then conveyed Zhang Yang’s surprising request that they all treat him as a stranger.
Zhou Jingmang was visibly confused and hurt by this. Zhuang Jie excused himself to the restroom and answered a call from Zhang Yang. Zhang Yang was annoyed that Zhuang Jie had revealed his wish to be a stranger to their friends. Zhuang Jie retorted that he couldn't keep secrets as well as Zhang Yang and that the situation had been awkward. He quickly ended the call as Qin Zhen approached. Qin Zhen, suspicious, confronted Zhuang Jie about his phone call.
He eventually admitted that he had maintained contact with Zhang Yang throughout the years, and also with Qin Zhen, but had kept his connection with Zhang Yang a secret from her.
Episode 11 Recap
During the 2008 winter holiday, Shen Yinghui sought Zhou Jingmang's help because her ballet class schedule had changed, preventing her from assisting Teacher Shi with the parent-teacher interviews. Zhou Jingmang readily agreed to help. Later, over dinner, Zhou Jingmang's mother promised to buy her a dress for the New Year if she could rank in the top five in her upcoming exams.
Zhou Jingmang, inspired by Shen Yinghui's pretty outfit and wanting to impress Zhang Yang, was keen on getting a beautiful dress. She told her mother that her classmates often made fun of her for dressing like a child. At the parent-teacher interviews, Zhou Jingmang encountered Zhuang Jie, who informed her that Zhang Yang's parents would not be attending because Zhang Yang had gone to Guangzhou to learn dance from the best locking teachers there, possibly even to compete.
Zhuang Jie showed her a photo, claiming it was of Zhang Yang in Guangzhou. However, Zhou Jingmang noticed the background in the photo looked suspiciously similar to their school's own dance studio. Unknown to Zhou Jingmang, Zhuang Jie had been tasked by Zhang Yang to show her this particular photo, which was indeed taken at their school's dance studio and was part of Zhang Yang's elaborate deception.
Zhou Jingmang excelled in her exams, ranking third in her class and exceeding her mother's expectations. Her mother was prepared to buy her the promised dress, but Zhou Jingmang changed her mind. She chose a red hoodie instead, influenced by the red hoodie Zhang Yang was wearing in the photo Zhuang Jie had shown her. The next day, Zhou Jingmang saw news reports of severe snowstorms in southern China, including Guangzhou, causing widespread traffic paralysis and stranding thousands of travelers.
Worried about Zhang Yang, she immediately called Zhuang Jie. He reassured her that Zhang Yang should be back soon, explaining that Zhang Yang was used to traveling and could take care of himself. However, Zhuang Jie privately admitted to himself that he hadn't been able to contact Zhang Yang either, but maintained hope that Zhang Yang would be fine.
Still anxious, Zhou Jingmang asked her mother for a radio, feigning interest in an English song program for listening practice, but secretly tuned in to the news for updates on the snowstorm. On New Year's Eve, Zhou Jingmang was still unable to reach Zhang Yang. Meanwhile, Ling Chen's father was in the hospital. Ling Chen expressed his gratitude for the care provided by Shen Yinghui's mother by offering fruit.
Qin Zhen, learning that Ling Chen and his father were in the hospital, asked Shen Yinghui to deliver some items to him on her behalf, specifying that Shen Yinghui should claim them as her own gifts. Shen Yinghui, in addition, brought Ling Chen and his father some homemade New Year cake from her parents. Ling Chen thanked her by giving her math notes for the upcoming semester.
Qin Zhen, who was with Zhuang Jie, called Shen Yinghui (who was at the hospital) and later, with Zhuang Jie, visited a restaurant offering a "Prayers for the New Year's set meal" which included silk ribbons for writing wishes to be placed by the sea. Qin Zhen, believing in the wishes' power, made two. Later that evening, Zhang Yang finally called Zhou Jingmang.
To avoid her parents' questions, Zhou Jingmang feigned a stomach ache and excused herself to the bathroom to take the call. She bombarded Zhang Yang with questions about his whereabouts, safety, and when he would return. Zhang Yang, who was on a bus, explained that his phone had died, and he was using a staff member's phone, which others were also waiting to use.
He quickly told her he was on his way back and would arrive tomorrow noon before being rushed off the phone. Unbeknownst to Zhou Jingmang, Yu Hui Tong was also on the bus with Zhang Yang and had deliberately pretended her phone was dead to prevent him from calling Zhou Jingmang. When Yu Hui Tong offered Zhang Yang bread, he coldly declined, clearly annoyed by her selfish behavior.
Overnight, Zhou Jingmang meticulously searched for bus schedules online, noting every detail for Zhang Yang's arrival. The next morning, New Year's Day, she woke from a dream where Zhang Yang complimented her writing and called her his goddess. Her mother urged her to get ready to visit her uncle's house, a yearly tradition. Zhou Jingmang, however, feigned her stomach ache again, claiming she needed to rest and wanted to do her holiday homework.
She convinced her parents to let her stay home. After they left, Zhou Jingmang headed to the bus station. A staff member informed her that all buses from Guangzhou were delayed and would use a single exit. She waited patiently until nightfall, as snow began to fall. Finally, in the swirling snow, she saw Zhang Yang.
Seeing her there, a flood of emotions washed over him, and he silently promised himself that this moment, with her in her red hoodie, would be the starting point of all his future memories. Years later, in 2015, Zhou Jingmang, Shen Yinghui, Qin Zhen, and Zhuang Jie were waiting for Zhang Yang outside a restaurant. Zhou Jingmang was growing impatient and decided to leave, but as she turned, she saw Zhang Yang.
Though they had a brief recent encounter, her emotions were stirred again. After the others left them to talk, Zhou Jingmang tearfully apologized to Zhang Yang for her past actions during their senior year, hoping they could still be friends. Zhang Yang acknowledged that her apology was "all in the past," but when she questioned why he still avoided them, he confessed that he hated his past self, and it was the reason he distanced himself from his old friends.
He explained that seeing her reminded him of their younger days when they believed hard work guaranteed success and felt they were unique, adding that looking at their current selves felt like a blatant mockery of who they once were. Zhou Jingmang, undeterred by his words, simply pointed out that the alcoholic chocolate he had just eaten meant he couldn't drive. She insisted on driving him home.
Episode 12 Recap
In 2008, during the Chinese New Year, Zhou Jingmang waited anxiously at the exit of the train station until night fell and snow began to gently descend. She found herself consumed by a worrisome feeling, realizing how truly important Zhang Yang was to her and resolving to treasure him. She wished him a pocketful of happiness upon his return and hoped all his worries would be fleeting. Finally, Zhang Yang appeared, putting his headphones gently on her.
Zhou Jingmang's initial joy, however, turned into a frozen smile as she then saw Yu Hui Tong emerge from the station alongside him. Zhou Jingmang quickly lied, claiming she had been separated from her parents while picking up relatives, and then bid them farewell. Observing this, Yu Hui Tong remarked to Zhang Yang that he seemed to like Zhou Jingmang more than she had imagined, but Zhou Jingmang was also wimpier than expected.
Zhang Yang retorted that it had nothing to do with her, but Yu Hui Tong insisted that they had celebrated New Year together and found the snow particularly romantic, comparing it to the "Allure of Love." She confessed that she had been very happy these past few days. As winter gave way to spring, the new school term began.
Zhou Jingmang waited at the school entrance to surprise Zhang Yang with a warm milk tea, explaining that she had wanted to treat him at the train station but the drink had gotten cold. Zhang Yang playfully called her childish, then warned her that she only had ten minutes until the school bell, and her "short little legs" would take five minutes to reach class, while his "long legs" would get him there in no time.
Later, in class, Qin Zhen excitedly shared a new CD she bought during the break, inviting Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang to listen. Despite the approaching self-study session, they started humming along to "Invisible Wings," and soon Zhuang Jie joined in, quickly prompting the entire class to sing along. The harmonious scene, however, was interrupted by Teacher Zhou, who angrily burst into the classroom, chastising them for singing after the bell had rung.
She demanded to know who started it, threatening to punish the entire class if no one confessed. Zhuang Jie bravely stepped forward, admitting he started it, but Qin Zhen immediately countered, saying it was her fault. Teacher Zhou, frustrated by their collective defiance, told them all to follow her. Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang also confessed their participation, and even Ling Chen, the class monitor, stated that it was a class-wide act.
Teacher Zhou sent Ling Chen back to class, stating the matter was not over and would be dealt with later. After class, Zhang Yang subtly passed a note to Zhou Jingmang, asking her to meet him. When they spoke, Zhou Jingmang explained that she was just being honest, as everyone was singing, and she couldn't let Qin Zhen and Zhuang Jie take all the blame. Zhang Yang remarked that they were indeed alike.
He then advised her to seek his help if such a situation arose again, promising to protect her image as a good student and prevent her from being negatively affected, knowing her wish was to study hard, get into a good university, and please her parents and teachers. Qin Zhen found Zhou Jingmang and excitedly mentioned that Teacher Shi wanted to see them, speculating that Teacher Zhou had "snitched" on them.
Zhou Jingmang laughed, finding it amusing to call Teacher Zhou "Zhou Ba Pi" (a derogatory nickname). In Teacher Shi’s office, the students apologized, but Zhuang Jie firmly defended their actions, stating they were genuinely admitting their mistake, not causing trouble, and questioned if Teacher Zhou was being overly sensitive in wanting to punish them. Teacher Shi, however, expressed her disappointment, questioning her own suitability as a homeroom teacher given their disruptive behavior and defiant attitude.
She then assigned them the punishment of cleaning all the school's toilets after classes, only allowing them to go home once the task was complete. Qin Zhen, relieved they wouldn't face formal demerits, praised Teacher Shi, to which Teacher Shi clarified that it was Teacher Zhou's idea, and that he was also looking out for them, a fact they would understand when they were older. Zhou Jingmang was assigned to clean the toilets with Zhang Yang.
After she finished the girls' restroom, Zhang Yang, complaining about her slowness, made her help him with the boys' restroom. She reluctantly entered, feeling embarrassed by the "strange structure" she saw inside. Later, she recounted the experience to Shen Yinghui, who laughed and asked if she truly disliked Zhang Yang's teasing.
Shen Yinghui suggested that Zhang Yang's constant teasing was simply his way of trying to get Zhou Jingmang's attention, a sentiment Zhou Jingmang found confusing since Zhang Yang was already very attention-grabbing. Shen Yinghui confessed that she sometimes envied Zhou Jingmang. Meanwhile, Qin Zhen approached Ling Chen to give him knitted gloves, explaining they were compensation for dirtying his clothes with milk tea previously. Ling Chen refused, suggesting she spend her time on practice problems instead.
Qin Zhen, undeterred, told him she thought he was "very great" and "super handsome" for standing up for the class, admitting she used to think he was unapproachable. She then took the gloves back, promising to fix them as they were "a little ugly." Later, Qin Zhen discussed with Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui how Ling Chen had changed, becoming more attractive than just a studious "god."
Shen Yinghui noted that Ling Chen, as the class monitor and a top student, usually cared only about grades and never talked back to teachers. Qin Zhen felt his actions showed great courage, and she wanted to befriend him because he often seemed lonely. That evening, in their dorm room, after Zhou Jingmang’s good exam results and overachieving during the holiday convinced her parents to let her live in the dorms again, the three girls worked on homework.
They discussed their future majors, agreeing that choosing based on one's strengths was best. As Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui excelled in humanities, they decided to pursue that path. Qin Zhen, wanting to stay with her friends, declared she would also choose humanities, ensuring their "Haicheng S. H. E" trio would remain together. The next day, Zhou Jingmang made sure Zhang Yang, who sat behind her, overheard her intention to choose humanities for her studies.
She reflected on the New Year, how she had waited only for him to say "Happy New Year," and how separation made her realize that having someone you want to see means you're never truly alone. Years later, in 2015, the friends gathered. Qin Zhen was notably annoyed with Zhuang Jie. After dropping off Shen Yinghui, Zhuang Jie intentionally took a wrong turn instead of taking Qin Zhen home, bringing her to the school.
He then led them both to the school rooftop. Shen Yinghui explained that Zhuang Jie had brought them there to make up for Qin Zhen missing the school's fireworks display years ago when she transferred. Zhuang Jie wanted her to experience all the views she had missed so she would have no regrets in life with him. He confessed that he had planned to propose to her there that night, but "something came up," presumably referring to Zhang Yang.
Qin Zhen, still upset about an earlier lie, questioned his sincerity and whether he truly liked her or Zhang Yang. Zhou Jingmang explained that she had initially wanted to tell them, but seeing their high expectations for Zhang Yang, she felt they might be disappointed because he was indeed different now. The friends discussed how Zhang Yang had changed significantly from his once "strong independent" self. Qin Zhen wondered if he was still upset about the college exams.
Zhuang Jie recalled asking Zhang Yang once why he was so distant, and Zhang Yang replied that he felt "not good enough" to see them, a remark that surprised Shen Yinghui as it was unlike him. Shen Yinghui concluded that after growing up, they had all deviated from their younger selves. Later, Zhou Jingmang accompanied Zhang Yang to a restaurant.
He mentioned that he frequented the place because it was near her old rented apartment, hoping to run into her, but had no luck for five years. Offering her a bite from his plate, he spoke of a saying that others' food always tasted better, a sentiment he had longed to experience but couldn't, as he had always been alone. He then softly asked Zhou Jingmang how she had been.
Zhou Jingmang asked how he wanted her to answer, observing that he "seemed great." Zhang Yang described his current life as earning "not a lot, but not less," and living "not hard, but not easy," like many others who "seem fine." He added that "seeming fine after growing up isn't easy." Zhou Jingmang remarked that he "wasn't like this back then."
Zhang Yang responded that being 25 was different from being 16 or 17, and that after experiencing hunger, "dreams no longer exist," which he considered normal. He then simply stated that he was "really hungry."
Episode 13 Recap
In the spring of 2008, Ling Chen was collecting subject selection forms for Teacher Shi. Zhou Jingmang informed him that she would submit hers the following day. Ling Chen then provided Shen Yinghui with a challenging practice test from a highly regarded professor, which piqued Qin Zhen's curiosity. Qin Zhen also eagerly presented a flyer for a S. H. E. concert to be held in Nanjing, highlighting it as a rare opportunity since the group would be so close.
Zhou Jingmang, however, was hesitant due to concerns about her parents' disapproval and the 280-yuan ticket price for even the cheapest seats in the stands, ultimately deciding not to go. She preferred not to lie to her parents, even when Qin Zhen offered to help make an excuse. Instead of the concert, Qin Zhen suggested they all go see the movie "My Blueberry Nights" with Zhuang Jie, who had movie tickets after losing a bet.
Overhearing this conversation, Zhang Yang, who had been resting on his desk, silently rose and left the classroom. The girls then heard that Zhang Yang had been in contact with an agent and might be moving to Beijing to become a trainee. Concerned that he might drop out of school, Zhou Jingmang immediately ran to the basketball court to find him. On the court, Zhang Yang approached Zhou Jingmang from behind, tapping her back.
Flustered, she struggled to articulate her concerns about him going to Beijing, instead vaguely asking about his return. Zhang Yang, assuming she was inquiring about the concert, reassured her that he would go. Seeing her class selection form, which indicated humanities, he then realized she was worried about him leaving. He clarified that he would not leave and intended to be in the same class as her, affectionately calling her a "crying pig."
Zhang Yang later confronted Zhuang Jie for telling Zhou Jingmang about the trainee offer. Zhuang Jie explained that Zhang Yang had rejected the manager's good opportunity specifically for Zhou Jingmang, and that she deserved to know about his sacrifice. Zhang Yang, however, stubbornly denied his reasons. Separately, Yu Huitong offered Zhang Yang a pair of gloves as a farewell gift for his supposed journey to Beijing.
When he refused, she surmised that he was not going because of Zhou Jingmang, to which Zhang Yang simply stated that his decision was a personal matter and that staying was important to him. Meanwhile, Shen Yinghui encountered Ling Chen at the hospital. She asked him for help with a math problem.
Ling Chen’s explanation, which involved connecting a simple auxiliary line, made Shen Yinghui realize that straightforward solutions are often overlooked, a thought that resonated with her as she recalled Zhang Yang's past act of helping Zhou Jingmang on stage. Later, Zhang Yang was seen purchasing five large boxes of drinks to collect a complete set of three S. H. E. mini keychains, a promotional giveaway.
Li Yu Xiang also visited Zhou Jingmang, using the delivery of her class's mail as an excuse to see her. He proudly shared that he had joined the Lan Mu dance team, becoming its second-youngest member, though he found the actual youngest, a child of five or six, quite childish. Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui excitedly showed Zhou Jingmang their S. H. E. concert tickets.
When Zhang Yang joined them and asked if he and Zhou Jingmang could also attend, Qin Zhen explained that Zhou Jingmang couldn't go due to prior commitments and the expensive ticket price. To help Zhou Jingmang, Zhang Yang swiftly declared that she had promised to be his assistant for an upcoming performance in exchange for the keychains, thus providing her with a plausible reason not to attend the concert. Zhou Jingmang was grateful for his intervention.
Back in class, Zhou Jingmang noticed Zhang Yang's continued absence and attempted to text him. Teacher Zhou caught her using her phone and confiscated it, promising to return it if Zhou Jingmang performed well on her final exams; otherwise, it would be given to her parents. Feeling disheartened after class, Zhou Jingmang was approached by Zhang Yang, who had a clear slap mark on his face.
He explained that his father had hit him because Zhang Yang insisted on choosing humanities to be in Zhou Jingmang's class, while his father demanded he study science. Despite his father's anger, Zhang Yang asserted that his decision to study humanities was for himself. He then added, teasingly, that being in the same class would also make it easier for Zhou Jingmang to tutor him, and reiterated his request for her to be his assistant for his performance.
Around the same time, Shen Yinghui, who was planning to visit Ling Chen for more questions, observed him tenderly caring for his father in the hospital and quietly left, respecting their private moment. That weekend, Zhang Yang, confessing his nervousness about watching a movie with a girl for the first time, woke Zhuang Jie early to head to the cinema. They met Qin Zhen, Shen Yinghui, and Zhou Jingmang there, with Shen Yinghui arriving elegantly dressed.
Zhang Yang quietly told Zhou Jingmang not to feel self-conscious, emphasizing that she and Shen Yinghui were incomparable, which angered Zhou Jingmang, who responded by stepping on his foot. Zhuang Jie's movie tickets presented a seating dilemma: four seats were together, but one was in the row behind. As Zhou Jingmang hesitated, Shen Yinghui quickly took the seat next to Zhang Yang, leaving Zhou Jingmang to sit alone in the back.
Watching Zhang Yang and Shen Yinghui together, Zhou Jingmang’s imagination ran wild, leading her to accidentally spill her cola on Zhang Yang. Mortified, she apologized profusely and rushed to the restroom. When she returned, Zhang Yang had moved to sit beside her, having switched seats with the person next to her to spare Zhou Jingmang further embarrassment. Sitting next to Zhang Yang, a position she had chosen intentionally, Shen Yinghui acknowledged her growing feelings for him.
In 2015, Zhou Jingmang remained determined to help Zhang Yang, believing that a significant event must have occurred during the intervening five years to cause his profound change. She sought out Yu Huitong, who disclosed that her initial encounter with Zhang Yang had been a blind date arranged by their parents.
Yu Huitong clarified that nothing romantic developed; in fact, she later saw Shen Yinghui at Zhang Yang's office, where Zhang Yang had explicitly stated in front of Yu Huitong that he no longer wished to see "everyone," a statement that included Yu Huitong herself. Yu Huitong then conveyed to Zhou Jingmang that while no one could truly help Zhang Yang, perhaps Zhou Jingmang herself held that possibility.
Subsequently, Zhang Yang returned to work after his leave, ensuring continued interactions with Zhou Jingmang. He was assigned a task requiring him to deliver photocopies to someone named "Xiao Zhou," and Zhou Jingmang's contact information was attached to the document.
Episode 14 Recap
In the summer of 2008, Zhang Yang, Shen Yinghui, and Qin Zhen surprised Zhou Jingmang with tickets to an S. H. E. concert, having initially led her to believe she was merely assisting Zhang Yang. Zhou Jingmang, initially hesitant about the expense, was convinced to join them. On their bus ride back after the concert, the three friends joyfully recounted their experience, marveling at having seen their idol live. Zhou Jingmang declared it the happiest day of her life.
However, a sudden, heavy downpour caught them unprepared at the bus stop. Mindful of Zhou Jingmang’s curfew, Zhang Yang quickly gave her a raincoat and rode her home on his bicycle. During the ride, he playfully exchanged the concert ticket's value for the right to be the first to read all her future novels. Upon reaching her house, Zhou Jingmang gave him a small gift.
Meanwhile, Ling Chen arrived at the bus stop, explaining that Zhuang Jie had a family matter and couldn't come. Qin Zhen, sensing that Ling Chen wanted to speak with Shen Yinghui privately, lied and said her father was coming to pick her up, encouraging Shen Yinghui to ride with Ling Chen. Shen Yinghui reluctantly agreed but asked Ling Chen to stop halfway.
She confronted him, expressing her dislike for people who approached her with ulterior motives, believing he was seeking to use her mother, a doctor, for his father's convenience at the hospital. Ling Chen attempted to explain his family's poverty and his genuine desire for his father's treatment, but Shen Yinghui refused to listen, hailing a taxi to go home alone. Qin Zhen was left by herself at the bus stop.
The next day, news of a major earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan province, spread, deeply unsettling everyone. In class, Teacher Shi placed a donation box for earthquake relief and entrusted Ling Chen with its care. Meanwhile, Qin Zhen, having been drenched in the rain, developed acute pneumonia and was hospitalized. Zhuang Jie, feeling guilty, visited her at the Affiliated Hospital. He pressed her about her lie.
Qin Zhen eventually confessed that she fabricated the story about her father to give Ling Chen and Shen Yinghui an opportunity to spend time alone. Zhuang Jie was furious, chastising her for disregarding her health. Returning to school, Zhuang Jie confronted Ling Chen, who found his anger inexplicable. When Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang arrived, Zhuang Jie explained Qin Zhen's actions, which further solidified Shen Yinghui's conviction that Ling Chen was opportunistic.
Later, Li Yu Xiang offered Zhou Jingmang a first-aid kit and self-help tips in light of the earthquake. Zhang Yang swiftly intervened, declining the gift on Zhou Jingmang’s behalf and instead giving her a small bottle, explaining it could indicate an earthquake in her dorm. He asserted that he would ensure her safety. That afternoon, as Zhou Jingmang submitted homework to Teacher Zhou, she observed Ling Chen delivering a lunchbox to the teacher, who then offered to tutor him.
This scene made Zhou Jingmang ponder whether friendships were merely transactional. Zhang Yang, overhearing her thoughts, strongly disagreed, reminding her of their friendship which defied such notions. Later that day, Zhang Yang slipped a note into Zhou Jingmang’s English textbook, instructing her to meet him at the eastern perimeter wall for a surprise. After scaling the wall, they arrived at an event venue, only to discover the event had been postponed.
Despite this, Zhou Jingmang was delighted by a large cardboard standee of S. H. E. Zhang Yang, noticing her fondness, managed to acquire it for her. He playfully signed his own name next to Hebe's on the standee, declaring that wherever S. H. E. was, he would be there too. Years later, in 2015, Zhou Jingmang was working in her office.
While looking at Zhang Yang's image on her computer, she was startled by a colleague and accidentally spilled hot coffee on her leg. Zhang Yang, who happened to be present to deliver documents, immediately carried her to the men's restroom to rinse the burn with cold water. As she treated her leg, they briefly reminisced about a previous, memorable encounter in a men's restroom. Zhou Jingmang expressed her desire to rekindle their friendship, but Zhang Yang gently refused, stating he couldn't overcome the emotional barrier that separated them.
Episode 15 Recap
In the summer of 2008, Zhang Yang walked Zhou Jingmang back to school, reminding her to be careful not to catch a cold after falling asleep on the bus. She handed him the latest part of her novel, explaining that she hadn't written much this semester due to being busy, but the section about him was entirely complete.
That night, while Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui were asleep, Zhou Jingmang secretly got up and carefully pasted Zhang Yang's name onto the back of the girl group's standee, falling asleep with a sweet smile. Later, Zhang Yang injured his arm while playing basketball with friends and was taken to the hospital. Shen Yinghui's mother, a nurse, reassured them that his bone was not severely damaged.
He would need to stay overnight for observation, but if there were no complications, he could go home the next day. She advised everyone to go home and rest, reminding them that exams were next week and they shouldn't let Zhang Yang's injury affect their preparation. Zhang Yang expressed doubt about being able to take his exams, but urged his friends to perform well. After Zhou Jingmang left, Zhuang Jie noticed Qin Zhen looked preoccupied.
When he asked, Qin Zhen confessed her desire to transfer schools to study nursing. Zhuang Jie questioned her decision, expressing reservations about nursing as a profession and asking if she had discussed it with her parents. Qin Zhen admitted she hadn't yet but clarified that this wasn't a fleeting impulse. She explained that after her recent hospitalization, seeing a nurse diligently care for an elderly patient had inspired her, making her realize her passion for helping others.
She was determined to pursue nursing and believed she could persuade her parents. She asked Zhuang Jie to keep her plans a secret until everything was finalized, sealing their promise with a pinky swear. Later, Shen Yinghui called Zhou Jingmang, informing her that Zhang Yang had developed a fever that morning when her mother was at the hospital for his discharge paperwork.
This news greatly worried Zhou Jingmang, who spent the evening searching online for information and anxiously waiting for further updates from Shen Yinghui. She even made sure her phone was positioned so she wouldn't miss a call, even if she fell asleep. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Shen Yinghui inquired about Zhang Yang's condition and was told by a nurse that Doctor Lin was checking on him and he should be fine.
The nurse then asked Shen Yinghui to return a basket of fruits to Ling Chen, who was also a patient. Shen Yinghui gave the fruits back to Ling Chen, telling him that nursing was their professional duty and gifts were unnecessary. Ling Chen, who had been hoping she came to visit him, became visibly disappointed when she revealed she was there to see Zhang Yang because he was injured playing basketball.
He remarked that her connection with Zhang Yang seemed to be more than just friendly, suggesting he couldn't compete with that bond before leaving. On the day of the exam, Zhang Yang attempted to sneak out of the hospital, eager to return to school despite still being under observation for his fever. A nurse caught him trying to fill out discharge forms, reminding him he needed to rest and that his family had to handle such paperwork.
Undeterred, he managed to evade the nurses and escape, arriving at school just as the final bell for the exam rang. However, he couldn't find Zhou Jingmang. Meanwhile, Zhou Jingmang, worried about Zhang Yang, finished her exam with 30 minutes to spare and rushed to the hospital. A nurse escorted her to Zhang Yang's room, but he was no longer there, leading to them perfectly missing each other.
When her exam results were released, Zhou Jingmang's parents were upset to see her ranked ninth in her class, a significant drop from her usual performance. Her mother expressed disappointment, recalling a previous instance where Zhou Jingmang still managed second place despite a stomach ache during a literature exam.
Her mother also revealed that Teacher Zhou had contacted her, the first time this had happened, to report that Zhou Jingmang had been using her phone in class, speculating that this was the reason for her declining grades. Zhou Jingmang denied it was the cause but admitted her fault and promised to study harder during the break.
As punishment, her parents decided she would spend the holidays at her grandmother's house, where she would not only study with extra homework but also help with chores. Her father handed her back her phone, but warned that from the next month on, he and her mother would monitor her internet and call records daily. Recalling his strict warning, Zhou Jingmang reconsidered her impulse to call Zhang Yang and put her phone away.
Zhang Yang was preparing for a performance and planned to treat everyone, especially Shen Yinghui, to a meal afterwards to thank her mother for her help. Zhuang Jie asked if he should inform Zhou Jingmang about the performance, but Zhang Yang declined, saying they could talk after he returned. He reasoned that with her parents being so strict, telling her now would only cause her more trouble. Zhuang Jie playfully teased Zhang Yang about his newfound thoughtfulness before they left.
Zhou Jingmang arrived at her grandmother's house, where she was greeted with warmth and affection. Her grandmother remarked on how much she had grown and thinned since she last saw her, emphasizing that her health was more important than schoolwork. She promised to cook for Zhou Jingmang and offered her candy, which Zhou Jingmang gratefully accepted, feeling cherished like a child again.
Zhou Jingmang then volunteered to help her grandmother with some work by the ocean, insisting she could handle it. While Qin Zhen and Zhuang Jie were having a meal, Qin Zhen treated him to dinner, explaining that her parents had rejected her nursing school plans and she wanted to vent. Zhuang Jie mentioned that Zhang Yang was out performing after being discharged from the hospital.
He then recounted how Zhou Jingmang had left her exam early to visit Zhang Yang in the hospital, and how Zhang Yang had also left the hospital to find her at school, resulting in them missing each other entirely. He noted that Zhang Yang had worried about Zhou Jingmang, while her phone had been confiscated, making communication impossible.
Zhuang Jie decided it would be better if he informed Zhang Yang about Zhou Jingmang's visit, allowing them to resolve the misunderstanding themselves, and advised Qin Zhen not to tell Zhou Jingmang directly about Zhang Yang's attempt to find her. Zhang Yang sought out Zhou Jingmang, finding her by the ocean, helping her grandmother. She was surprised to see him, asking why he was there.
They shared a playful moment where he checked on her, then teased her, leading to a lighthearted chase. They spent time running, splashing water, and playing on the beach. Zhang Yang even playfully snatched a piece of fruit, making Zhou Jingmang call him immature. His presence transformed her mood, replacing her earlier anxieties with a radiant smile, as if all her worries had vanished. The narrative shifts to 2015.
Zhou Jingmang emerged from the restroom with a burned foot, having been helped by Zhang Yang. Her colleague playfully teased her about being carried into the men's room by "the handsome guy from the law firm," remarking on how the loud sound of pain had echoed through the floor. Zhou Jingmang corrected her, explaining it was Zhang Yang. Her colleague wondered why their connection hadn't progressed.
Zhou Jingmang then whispered her plan to her colleague: she hoped her colleague could arrange for people from the law firm to go to a KTV night, where Zhou Jingmang intended to get him drunk. She would then take him to their old school campus to get him to reveal what happened over the past five years and ultimately help him overcome his emotional struggles.
Zhou Jingmang shared her plan with Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui, who were discussing Yu Hui Tong's belief that Zhou Jingmang was the only one who could help Zhang Yang. Zhou Jingmang explained her strategy: her colleague would invite Zhang Yang and his law firm colleagues to a KTV night, allowing Zhou Jingmang to get him drunk.
She would then take him to their familiar school campus, hoping the setting and his inebriated state would prompt him to reveal what happened over the past five years and ultimately help him resolve his emotional struggles. While Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui supported her efforts, they mentioned that Yu Hui Tong had also talked to them, implying Yu Hui Tong might be aware of the plan.
Unknown to Zhou Jingmang, Yu Hui Tong had already informed Zhang Yang about the plan. Yu Hui Tong met with Zhang Yang, telling him Zhou Jingmang wanted to get him drunk to uncover the truth of the last five years. Zhang Yang questioned her motives for revealing this, but Yu Hui Tong insisted she was helping him and shared the KTV event details. On the night of the KTV, Zhang Yang indeed arrived.
Episode 16 Recap
Zhang Yang helped Zhou Jingmang finish her work at the beach early. He jokingly told her he had heard she was "exiled" to her grandmother's house due to declining grades and wanted to see how miserable she was. Despite his teasing, Zhou Jingmang felt a little happy. Before leaving, Zhang Yang promised he would return the next day.
The following morning, Zhou Jingmang woke up early, telling her grandmother she was going to work at the seaside, but secretly hoping Zhang Yang would appear unexpectedly. Sure enough, Zhang Yang arrived, accompanied by Zhuang Jie, Qin Zhen, and Shen Yinghui. They all pitched in, quickly completing Zhou Jingmang's work. During their return trip, Shen Yinghui and Qin Zhen revealed two things about Zhang Yang to Zhou Jingmang.
Shen Yinghui shared that Zhang Yang had developed a fever the night before their exam and, worried it might affect Zhou Jingmang, he had snuck out of the hospital to find her at school. Qin Zhen added that when Zhang Yang learned Zhou Jingmang was at her grandmother's fishing village, he went door-to-door asking for directions until he finally located her. Watching Zhang Yang's silhouette ahead, Zhou Jingmang couldn't help but smile.
Later, Zhou Jingmang brought her friends back to her grandmother's house. Her grandmother was overjoyed to see so many young people and prepared a delicious meal for them. The group enjoyed a lively dinner with Zhou Jingmang's grandmother, and Zhou Jingmang felt an immense happiness, reflecting on how this was the essence of true friendship—having companions in joy, support in helplessness, and a bond that wouldn't fade with time or distance.
After dinner, as they relaxed in the courtyard, Qin Zhen and Shen Yinghui teased Zhou Jingmang about a possible confession. Blushing, Zhou Jingmang insisted that she and Zhang Yang were merely ordinary classmates and that she had no special feelings for him. Zhang Yang, who was nearby, overheard her words and was visibly saddened. When they awoke from their rest, Zhang Yang was gone, leaving only a brief note stating he had left.
Upon returning to school, Zhou Jingmang sought out Zhang Yang, asking how he had been. He responded with a cold demeanor, asserting that their relationship was nothing more than that of ordinary classmates. Remembering her conversation with Qin Zhen, Zhou Jingmang suspected Zhang Yang had heard her remarks and was upset. She followed him to the science classroom, assuming he had chosen to pursue science, and her disappointment was evident.
In the humanities classroom, Shen Yinghui informed Zhou Jingmang that they still had two humanities classes, with Teacher Shi as their homeroom teacher, and Xiao Teacher Ma and Teacher Zhou remaining. To Zhou Jingmang's surprise, Li Yu Xiang entered, sat beside her, and began chatting animatedly. This scene was witnessed by Zhang Yang and Yu Hui Tong as they walked in.
It was then that Zhou Jingmang realized Zhang Yang had been deliberately misleading; he had, in fact, chosen to join the humanities class. Zhang Yang then sat next to Zhou Jingmang and commented that he only chose to sit there for peace and quiet, not because of her, and also mentioned his cleanliness habit. Zhou Jingmang, holding her ground, retorted that since he had made his intentions clear, she would not pester him.
She added that she had many things to do in high school and then, with a hint of defiance, asked him to wipe his own desk due to his mentioned cleanliness habit. That evening, Qin Zhen returned to the dormitory laden with snacks and announced her decision to transfer schools to study nursing, explaining that all the paperwork was already completed and she would be starting next week.
She revealed that her determination had grown after being sick, and despite initial resistance from her parents and Zhuang Jie, her unwavering resolve eventually won them over. Though Shen Yinghui cautioned her about the difficulties of nursing, Qin Zhen insisted she had to try, even if it meant risking failure, to avoid future regrets. The friends shared one last dorm night together, toasting to their enduring friendship.
The next day, as Zhou Jingmang diligently recited her lessons while walking down the stairs, she stumbled. Zhang Yang, who had been following behind her, quickly caught her. He then scolded her for her carelessness, causing Zhou Jingmang to burst into tears. Flustered and unsure how to console her, Zhang Yang rushed to Zhuang Jie for advice on how to apologize.
Zhuang Jie, who was on the phone, suggested a "girly" magazine with horoscopes and gift ideas, which Zhang Yang immediately rejected. Zhuang Jie then advised him to observe Zhou Jingmang's preferences and buy something she liked, warning him playfully not to buy everything she touched. Taking this advice, Zhang Yang bought her several novels.
Two months later, during the midterm exam results announcement, Teacher Shi revealed that Zhou Jingmang had shown the most significant improvement, scoring 658 points and surpassing Ling Chen to achieve first place in the entire grade, bringing a bright smile to her face. Shortly after, Li Yu Xiang approached Zhou Jingmang, eager to have her participate in the upcoming sports tournament's 4x100-meter male-female relay race, as he was the Sports Commissioner. Zhou Jingmang, admitting she was a slow runner, hesitated.
Zhang Yang intervened, telling Li Yu Xiang not to force her, and also instructed Li Yu Xiang not to call her "Little Mango." Li Yu Xiang argued that Zhou Jingmang hadn't explicitly said she didn't want to be called that or participate. Under pressure, Zhou Jingmang then firmly stated she did not like the nickname and did not wish to compete.
However, when Li Yu Xiang pressed further, implying their class would have no participants, Zhou Jingmang reluctantly conceded that he could sign her up if he wished. Annoyed, Zhang Yang walked away, declaring he wanted to ignore both of them. The following day, Li Yu Xiang was shocked to discover that Zhou Jingmang had been signed up for the 200-meter race, not the relay.
He quickly deduced it was Zhang Yang, who had initially been listed for the 200-meter race but then had Zhou Jingmang's name substituted. Zhou Jingmang confronted Zhang Yang, who sarcastically claimed he was helping her and Li Yu Xiang by allowing them to "bring glory" together, even stepping out of the race himself. In defiance, Zhou Jingmang declared she would train and run alongside Li Yu Xiang. The narrative then flashed forward to 2015.
Zhou Jingmang and Zhang Yang were at a karaoke bar. After singing a duet of "Invisible Wings," Zhou Jingmang seized the opportunity to speak with Zhang Yang, despite it being a work event, knowing he wouldn't listen otherwise. She earnestly told him that even though they hadn't achieved their childhood dreams, their efforts had truly transformed her into a better person. She encouraged him to look at her now, reminding him that if she could improve, so could he.
She revealed that in the past five years, though she hadn't found success, she had never given up. She handed him a USB drive containing her experiences from those years, telling him, "You can do it. I'll wait for you," before apologizing to the others for interrupting.
Episode 17 Recap
In autumn 2008, Zhang Yang unilaterally signed Zhou Jingmang up for the 200-meter race, having withdrawn from it himself and replaced his entry with Li Yu Xiang's name. Annoyed by his prank, Zhou Jingmang declared she would train with Li Yu Xiang. Zhang Yang watched them train with a visibly frustrated expression.
During training, Zhou Jingmang quickly tired, but Li Yu Xiang reassured her, emphasizing the importance of the process over results and contrasting his more relaxed approach with Zhang Yang's goal-driven nature. On the day of the sports festival, Zhou Jingmang initially led in the 200-meter race, with classmates cheering her on. However, upon seeing Zhang Yang, she became distracted and fainted just before the finish line. Zhang Yang immediately rushed to her side, carrying her to the infirmary.
There, Zhou Jingmang, though already conscious, feigned unconsciousness. When she sensed Zhang Yang approaching or thought he was about to do something, she startled awake. Zhang Yang then criticized her attitude, reminding her that he had brought her there. He also gave her a novel, telling her the nurse had said she was fine. She retorted that it was all his fault, prompting him to tease her about thinking Li Yu Xiang had carried her.
Zhang Yang then jokingly claimed he had dragged her by her hair, though he had actually carried her. He assured her she could leave once fully awake. Later, in the dormitory, Shen Yinghui confirmed that Zhang Yang had indeed carried Zhou Jingmang to the infirmary. She insisted Zhou Jingmang attend the evening's victory party and dress up to avoid embarrassing herself in front of Zhang Yang, reminding her that the teacher had allowed them to dress as they liked.
Zhou Jingmang, still upset with Zhang Yang, initially resisted. Shen Yinghui offered a "princess-style" dress, but Zhou Jingmang opted for a simpler one of Shen Yinghui's, pairing it with a red hoodie. They attempted to style her hair by braiding it wet to create curls, but the result was a wild, rock-band-like look, far from the intended magazine picture. With no time to re-wash, Zhou Jingmang decided to stick with her chosen outfit and hairstyle.
At the victory party, Zhang Yang tried to reserve a seat for Zhou Jingmang, even preventing Zhuang Jie from sitting there. Zhuang Jie teased Zhang Yang, suggesting his jealousy-driven prank had backfired and that Zhou Jingmang wouldn't sit with him anyway since he hadn't apologized. Yu Hui Tong then arrived and directly took the reserved seat next to Zhang Yang.
Meanwhile, Li Yu Xiang approached Zhou Jingmang, offered her food, and then sat beside her, asserting his place as her deskmate. Seeing this, Zhang Yang called Zhou Jingmang out of the room. Outside, Zhang Yang criticized her curly hair, calling it "ugly." Zhou Jingmang, who expected the insult, turned to leave. Zhang Yang then handed her a hat, claiming it was a free gift from a book purchase, conveniently suited to "cover her head."
He then suggested taking a picture with her phone, noting they were both wearing red hoodies, and captured a photo. Around Christmas, Zhou Jingmang, Shen Yinghui, and Qin Zhen met up. Qin Zhen, who had transferred to study nursing, enthusiastically shared her pride in her new school and her dream to become a "good white angel." Shen Yinghui then asked Zhou Jingmang if she wanted to buy a "blessing fruit" (peace apple), as she saw a vendor outside.
Zhou Jingmang firmly refused to buy one for Zhang Yang, citing his unprovoked prank of signing her up for the race and insisting he owed her an apology first. Shen Yinghui speculated that Zhang Yang's actions might have stemmed from jealousy regarding Li Yu Xiang. Later, while out, Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang encountered Ling Chen.
He attempted to give Shen Yinghui a blessing fruit and an apple ornament, but she rejected them both, stating she didn't like apples and they had already clarified their relationship. She advised him to find other friends, which led Ling Chen to sadly conclude that no matter his efforts, no one truly respected him. Back in her dormitory, Zhou Jingmang attempted to wrap an apple, worried it might look ugly.
When Shen Yinghui returned, Zhou Jingmang, embarrassed, quickly pretended to eat the apple she was preparing, taking a bite. Shen Yinghui, noticing the wrapping paper and books on the table, simply smiled knowingly without commenting. Shen Yinghui then informed Zhou Jingmang that she had been chosen for field duty the next day, as part of a school-wide hygiene inspection, due to her student ID number. Zhou Jingmang lamented her bad luck.
Later that evening, Li Yu Xiang, learning that Zhou Jingmang was assigned to field duty with Ling Chen, offered to cover for Ling Chen, who was feeling unwell. Zhuang Jie overheard this conversation and immediately called Zhang Yang, informing him that "Li Yu Xiang started up again." The next morning, Zhang Yang intercepted Li Yu Xiang, who was on his way to field duty, asserting that Zhou Jingmang wouldn't talk to him anyway.
Zhang Yang then snatched the duty armband from him. While on duty, Zhang Yang quietly followed Zhou Jingmang and pulled her out of the way just before she could be splashed with water. He then playfully demanded she wipe his face, teasing her about only partially repaying him. He reminded her it was Christmas Eve and asked if she had prepared a gift.
When Zhou Jingmang offered to buy him a "blessing fruit" (apple) immediately, Zhang Yang dismissively called it "lame" and unnecessary. Zhou Jingmang, feeling conflicted about giving a gift, later consulted Zhuang Jie. He reassured her that if she wanted to give a gift, she should, as everyone appreciates presents. Taking his advice, Zhou Jingmang went to a stall outside school to buy apples, only to find they were all sold out.
The vendor, however, gave her an "extra giveaway item" – an apple keychain. Meanwhile, Yu Hui Tong gave Zhang Yang a crystal apple. Upon hearing Zhuang Jie's hint about Zhou Jingmang having a gift for him, Zhang Yang mistakenly assumed the crystal apple was from her. Later, Zhou Jingmang entered the classroom and saw Zhang Yang holding the crystal apple. Feeling disheartened, she thought her own apple keychain gift seemed shabby in comparison.
Zhang Yang, still under the impression it was her gift, later casually commented on how "ugly" and "unpresentable" it was, then accidentally dropped and broke it. Zhou Jingmang, witnessing this, clarified that it was not her gift, and that she only had "that one" (referring to her apple keychain). Zhang Yang, realizing his mistake, then understood that her actual intended gift was the modest apple keychain.
As Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui walked, Shen Yinghui remarked that the apple keychain's quality wasn't very good, finding it "not very pretty." Ling Chen, who happened to be nearby, overheard this comment and clenched his fist, appearing visibly upset, further reinforcing his earlier belief that Shen Yinghui looked down on him.
Years later, in 2015, Zhang Yang returned home, reflecting on Zhou Jingmang's recent confession at the KTV, where she bravely conveyed her feelings and gave him a USB drive containing her experiences from the past five years. She told him that despite not always succeeding, she never gave up, and that she would wait for him. Zhang Yang then looked at the USB drive. The next day, his mother woke him up, commenting on his late sleep.
She then praised Yu Hui Tong, who visited them that morning, bringing gifts despite working overtime at school. His mother highlighted Yu Hui Tong's considerate nature, beauty, kindness, good career, and similar family background, expressing her strong approval. Without finishing his meal, Zhang Yang abruptly left for the school. Upon arrival, he found not only Yu Hui Tong but also Zhou Jingmang waiting for him.
Episode 18 Recap
On Christmas, the friends gathered for hotpot. Zhang Yang, who had secretly drawn a mango and "sorry" on his shirt earlier in the dorm, sat next to Zhou Jingmang. She noticed the drawing, and for a moment, seemed taken aback. Li Yu Xiang had earlier remarked that only he, Shen Yinghui, and Zhou Jingmang truly enjoyed spicy food, suggesting that friends share similar tastes.
Zhou Jingmang, however, had challenged this, insisting that differing tastes don't hinder friendship, even trying to eat spicy food herself, which Zhang Yang clearly saw through. Just then, the restaurant's power went out, plunging them into darkness amidst shouts of people confessing feelings. Zhang Yang leaned in and whispered an apology to Zhou Jingmang, admitting he hadn't intentionally signed her up for the race and complimenting her attire. Before she could react, he placed a whole apple on her plate.
When the lights came back on, Li Yu Xiang asked about the apple. Zhou Jingmang, trying to cover for Zhang Yang, claimed she had picked it up herself from the counter during the blackout, even though apples there were usually pre-cut. The friends then raised their glasses, toasting to their high school lives and their friendship. After dinner, the friends headed outside.
While Shen Yinghui, Yu Hui Tong, and Li Yu Xiang went to browse a nearby cart, Zhang Yang and Zhuang Jie stayed behind. Zhou Jingmang, returning from the bathroom, joined them. Zhang Yang continued to tease Zhou Jingmang about the earlier "sorry" and the crystal apples, asking if she forgave him. Zhuang Jie then shared his plans to study abroad, skipping the university entrance exam to learn English and take his exams overseas.
Zhang Yang, in turn, revealed he intended to take arts exams, but not for a specialized art school; instead, he aimed for a comprehensive university, looking at Zhou Jingmang as he spoke, perhaps hoping to attend the same school as her. Meanwhile, Li Yu Xiang, who was playing a shooting game, reflected on his feelings for Zhou Jingmang, realizing she would never look at him, and decided to give up.
His friend remarked that such a surrender would likely only be temporary. The morning after Christmas, Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang were engaged in morning reading, reviewing English vocabulary. Teacher Zhou interrupted them and instructed both to come to his office. Outside the office, Zhang Yang, sensing Zhou Jingmang's apprehension, reassured her he wouldn't let anything happen and insisted he was the one who pressured her to study.
Teacher Zhou, however, dismissed his claim, noting Zhou Jingmang's nervousness and sensitive nature, and stating that it would be worse if it affected her studies. He initially told Zhou Jingmang to return to class, promising to inform her of her punishment later. Yet, Zhang Yang intervened, concerned for Zhou Jingmang, and stated they should both go in to explain.
Once inside, Zhang Yang again took full responsibility, but Teacher Zhou remained skeptical, acknowledging they were listening to a vocabulary CD but suggesting other activities might have occurred. To prove their sincerity, Teacher Zhou issued an ultimatum: Zhang Yang had to score over 100 on his English final, and Zhou Jingmang needed to maintain her current academic performance. Failure to meet these conditions would result in Teacher Zhou contacting Zhou Jingmang's parents and imposing a demerit on Zhang Yang.
Zhang Yang accepted the terms, initially attempting to protect Zhou Jingmang from parental involvement, but Teacher Zhou solidified the dual consequences. Worried about Zhang Yang, Zhou Jingmang waited outside Teacher Zhou's office. Zhang Yang emerged, casually explaining that the situation was resolved and, as a "thank you" gift, he wanted her to help him study. He clarified the conditions: he needed to score above 100 in English, and she needed to maintain her grades.
Failure to meet these conditions would result in Teacher Zhou contacting her parents and imposing a demerit on him. Later, Yu Hui Tong tried to offer Zhang Yang her English study materials, subtly disparaging Zhou Jingmang's English skills and warning Zhang Yang about the potential social gap if their academic paths diverged. Zhang Yang, however, dismissed her concerns, expressing his trust in Zhou Jingmang.
Subsequently, Zhou Jingmang approached Teacher Shi, requesting a seat change to sit next to Zhang Yang, explicitly stating her desire to help him avoid expulsion, explaining that if he received another demerit, he would be expelled. Teacher Shi, drawing on her own experience, offered gentle advice, likening feelings to water in a cup that must be held steadily as one matures, and encouraged both students to strive for personal betterment.
She also rewarded Zhou Jingmang with a lollipop for a previous top score. Soon after, the new seating chart was posted, officially pairing Zhou Jingmang and Zhang Yang. Yu Hui Tong reacted with noticeable anger, questioning the fairness of the arrangement and hinting at jealousy, while Shen Yinghui recognized her emotion. After the seating change, Zhang Yang asked Zhou Jingmang why she had initiated it.
She explained it was to help him achieve the required 100 points in English, preventing his potential expulsion and ensuring he could take the university entrance exam. Haunted by Yu Hui Tong's earlier remarks, Zhang Yang then candidly asked Zhou Jingmang if she would still be friends with him if he failed to get into college. Zhou Jingmang avoided a direct answer, instead reassuring him that he would likely get into college and that they would work hard together.
True to her word, Zhou Jingmang began tutoring Zhang Yang daily, giving him a study notebook filled with her notes on tenses. Their efforts paid off; Zhang Yang showed remarkable progress, confidently answering Teacher Zhou's questions in class. During a mock exam session, designed to create an intense study environment for their group, Zhang Yang scored 102 in English, exceeding the target. To celebrate Zhang Yang's improved score, Shen Yinghui suggested they cook a meal at Zhang Yang's rented apartment.
Zhou Jingmang, despite privately admitting to Zhang Yang that she wasn't a good cook and would need to find recipes online, confidently declared she would prepare three dishes and a soup. At Zhang Yang's place, the spread included Shen Yinghui's curry rice, alongside Zhou Jingmang's attempts at stir-fried spinach, sweet and sour tenderloin, and scrambled eggs with tomatoes. The appearance of Zhou Jingmang's dishes was quite poor, with Li Yu Xiang even joking that her scrambled eggs looked like popcorn.
Zhou Jingmang, embarrassed, confessed to not controlling the heat well and urged everyone to eat Shen Yinghui's curry instead. However, Zhang Yang, prioritizing Zhou Jingmang's feelings, bravely ate her cooking, praising the taste and even requesting more. That night, Zhang Yang suffered from a severe stomach ache and subsequent frequent bathroom trips, indicating the true impact of the meal.
The following morning, Zhou Jingmang stood at the bus stop, debating whether to wait for Zhang Yang, and in her hesitation, missed her bus. Zhang Yang then arrived, having observed her dilemma. He informed her that he would be occupied with performances and dance classes during the upcoming break, and due to potential phone card issues, he wouldn't be able to call her.
Zhou Jingmang's face fell, and she quietly stated that if they wouldn't see or speak during the entire break, she had nothing more to say. Seeing her profound disappointment, Zhang Yang relented, promising to call her during the New Year. Her smile instantly returned. Five years later, in 2015, Yu Hui Tong left Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang alone at a cafe, excusing herself for work.
Zhang Yang noted that while the place hadn't changed, he questioned if all the effort others put into him was truly worthwhile. Zhou Jingmang challenged him, suggesting he could leave if he didn't think so. As Zhang Yang rose to depart, Zhou Jingmang embraced him from behind, tears streaming, declaring she had "never stopped looking" for him.
She revealed that in the past five years, she had dedicated herself to two pursuits: writing a novel and searching for him, and now, it seemed, both were on the verge of completion. After a moment's hesitation, Zhang Yang returned her embrace. Zhou Jingmang then led Zhang Yang to meet their waiting friends. Yu Hui Tong, having secured the cafe, prepared to leave for work.
The friends, relieved and happy to see Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang together, excitedly confirmed their surprise was ready. Shen Yinghui ushered them into her dance studio, a rehearsal room she proudly deemed "cool," expressing joy at the prospect of doing things together again, like in high school.
They then unveiled the surprise: an opportunity for Zhang Yang to dance and perform in a ballet performance, albeit with non-professional actors, which Shen Yinghui hoped would help them fulfill one of their shared dreams. However, Zhang Yang responded with a somber declaration that he "can do nothing about the dancing matter." Puzzled, his friends reminded him of his past talent, assuring him he could certainly manage a non-professional performance.
Zhang Yang then clarified, "What I mean is I can't dance." He revealed the devastating truth: he had suffered a ruptured ligament, an injury that meant he would "never be able to dance" again. The revelation left everyone stunned into silence.
Episode 19 Recap
During the 2009 winter break, Zhou Jingmang and Yu Hui Tong helped Teacher Shi prepare for parent-teacher interviews. Zhou Jingmang brought Teacher Shi some rock sugar pear soup, having noticed her recent cough. While assisting with exam papers, Zhou Jingmang saw Zhang Yang's English score of 90, which visibly disheartened her.
Teacher Shi comforted her, assuring her that Zhang Yang's score was good considering his foundation and the exam's difficulty, and promised to speak with Teacher Zhou to ask for leniency. Later, during the parent-teacher interviews, Teacher Zhou spoke with Zhou Jingmang's mother and did not mention her and Zhang Yang's interactions. As Zhou Jingmang and her mother were leaving, Yu Hui Tong deliberately approached them.
She told Zhou Jingmang's mother that while her own grades were good, Zhou Jingmang was even more impressive, not only for her scores but also for writing novels during self-study class, which were highly admired by other students. Zhou Jingmang's mother grew suspicious. Back home, Zhou Jingmang's parents confronted her. Her mother angrily stated that Zhou Jingmang was writing novels during self-study time. Her father demanded the novel, which was eventually retrieved from her schoolbag.
Her mother confiscated it, calling it a waste of time and lecturing her about the importance of focusing on studies, especially with high school graduation approaching. Zhou Jingmang defended her writing, insisting it didn't interfere with her studies, but her parents were resolute. For the entire winter break, she was forbidden from using the internet or going out, and her phone was confiscated.
On New Year's Eve, Zhou Jingmang asked her mother if she could use her phone to wish classmates happy new year, but her mother refused, deeming it a distraction and reminding her that classmates could use the student log for contact, as Shen Yinghui had done earlier. Meanwhile, Zhang Yang struggled to find change for a payphone as his phone was dead.
A kind stranger eventually gave him all their spare change, urging him to make his important call before midnight. At Zhou Jingmang's home, she appeared distracted and out of it, much to her parents' concern. When the landline finally rang, her father announced it was her class monitor, Ling Chen. Zhou Jingmang eagerly answered. Zhang Yang, pretending to be Ling Chen, quickly wished her a Happy New Year.
He acknowledged that it was inconvenient for her to talk and explained that Ling Chen would never call her anyway, so he would do most of the talking. He told her not to worry about his English score, as he hadn't done too badly. Before he could elaborate further, an automated voice announced the time limit was approaching.
Zhou Jingmang managed to tell him that she couldn't write her novel anymore because her parents had confiscated it before the call abruptly ended due to lack of funds. The next day, Zhang Yang called again, with Zhou Jingmang's mother waking her up to take the call, believing it was Ling Chen for study questions. Zhang Yang advised Zhou Jingmang to get a workbook so they could convincingly pretend to discuss problems.
He then revealed that he had a backup of the earlier chapters of her novel, much to her surprise and delight. He set a condition: since her novel had been discovered, she should record the rest of it into a language repeater, and they would exchange it on the first day of school. Zhou Jingmang, overjoyed, quickly ended the call, still pretending to discuss homework, and told her parents she was going to study more.
Her father noted that her attitude towards studying had improved, attributing it to her friendship with "good students." Zhou Jingmang happily began recording her novel into the repeater, while Zhang Yang meticulously transcribed the content she recorded. Upon returning to school, Zhou Jingmang found the atmosphere in class heavy, with everyone looking at her differently. Students whispered behind her back, calling her hypocritical.
They spread rumors that she had reported Teacher Zhou for poor teaching quality because Zhang Yang hadn't met Teacher Zhou's required English score, implying she did it to prevent Zhang Yang's expulsion. This supposedly led to the sudden transfer of both Teacher Zhou and Teacher Shi, making the students believe she was responsible for their departure. Xiao Teacher Ma then entered the classroom to announce that Teacher Shi would no longer be their class teacher, and he would take over.
He also stated that Teacher Zhou would no longer be teaching them English. He urged students to continue studying hard regardless of teacher allocations, as they would soon be entering their senior year. His announcement seemed to confirm the rumors in the students' minds. Concerned about the widespread gossip and not wanting Zhou Jingmang to be the center of attention, Zhang Yang suggested they ask Xiao Teacher Ma to change their deskmates.
He argued it would stop people from talking about her helping him with lessons. However, Zhou Jingmang firmly refused, asserting that since she hadn't done anything wrong, she shouldn't hide, recalling Zhang Yang's own advice from a previous incident. She further reasoned that changing seats would only validate the rumors about them and the teachers covering up for them, which would be a disservice to the teachers.
Zhang Yang was impressed by her newfound resilience, remarking that he was "getting to know her again." Later, Zhang Yang took Zhou Jingmang to the sky terrace, a secluded spot. He encouraged her to shout out her feelings to lift her spirits, playfully starting by yelling "Zhou Jing Mang is a primary school student!" Zhou Jingmang, initially annoyed, soon joined in, exuberantly declaring Zhang Yang a "naughty kindergarten friend."
Zhang Yang noted that she had laughed, and Zhou Jingmang, feeling empowered, proclaimed that since she had done nothing wrong, she was not afraid of any rumors. She vowed to work hard to get into the best university and become a writer, with Zhang Yang cheering her on. Zhou Jingmang later sought out Xiao Teacher Ma to understand the situation.
He explained that Teacher Zhou had been transferred to teach the 11th grade, and Teacher Shi had resigned due to personal family matters. He clarified that these were normal transfers and not connected to the rumors. Relieved, Zhou Jingmang then confessed that she hadn't given up on her dream of writing and asked if Xiao Teacher Ma would still be willing to guide her. He readily agreed, provided that her writing did not interfere with her studies.
Later, Shen Yinghui showed Zhou Jingmang a widespread image—a screenshot of a chat history that revealed the true reason behind Teacher Zhou's transfer. The screenshot showed Yu Hui Tong admitting she had casually mentioned some complaints about Teacher Zhou to her father, who then reported it to the school, leading to Teacher Zhou being transferred to a lower grade.
While this cleared Zhou Jingmang's name, both she and Shen Yinghui wondered why Yu Hui Tong would do such a thing and how her private chat became public. Yu Hui Tong became isolated by her classmates. Despite Shen Yinghui's anger towards Yu Hui Tong, Zhou Jingmang felt sympathetic and suggested they help her, explaining that Xiao Teacher Ma had clarified that Teacher Shi resigned for personal family reasons and Teacher Zhou was merely transferred, debunking the earlier rumors entirely.
Unexpectedly, Teacher Shi then appeared, announcing her return from her break. In 2015, Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui discussed Zhang Yang's inability to dance due to a ligament injury, sympathizing with how difficult it must have been for him over the past five years. Zhou Jingmang realized this might explain his prolonged absence and reluctance to meet them. She also apologized to Shen Yinghui, stating that she and Zhang Yang would not be able to help with her ballet performance.
Shen Yinghui, however, was understanding, telling Zhou Jingmang not to worry and to focus instead on spending time with Zhang Yang to help him overcome his trauma and find happiness again. For their first date, Zhou Jingmang chose the school. When Zhang Yang asked why, she revealed that it had been her high school dream to openly walk hand-in-hand with him through the school grounds, a chance she couldn't let slip away after finally finding him again. Zhang Yang took her hand. She then produced a shovel, declaring it was for a "treasure hunt."
Episode 20 Recap
Teacher Shi visited Yu Hui Tong at school, bringing a packet of seeds and explaining that students are like seeds needing care to blossom. She reassured Yu Hui Tong that her resignation was due to family matters, not Yu Hui Tong, and that Teacher Zhou's transfer to another class was also for separate reasons, so Yu Hui Tong shouldn't feel responsible.
Teacher Shi kindly told Yu Hui Tong that past issues should be left behind and that all teachers should accept student supervision. The seeds symbolized their agreement to both continue growing. Yu Hui Tong asked if Teacher Shi would return, but Teacher Shi confirmed her resignation. Teacher Shi then informed Yu Hui Tong that, starting tomorrow, she would transfer to Class 10, a decision made after Teacher Zhou discussed the class atmosphere with the principal and the school agreed.
Teacher Shi encouraged her to study hard. Soon after, Zhou Jingmang arrived, asking about Teacher Shi, but Yu Hui Tong informed her that Teacher Shi had already resigned and left. Upset by this, Zhou Jingmang ran towards the school gates to try and stop her. Yu Hui Tong quickly called Zhang Yang, telling him Zhou Jingmang was pursuing Teacher Shi towards the school gates. Zhang Yang promptly arrived on his bike and took Zhou Jingmang with him.
They caught up to Teacher Shi at a bus stop. Teacher Shi expressed her happiness at having met them and being their teacher. She shared a profound piece of advice, telling them that the most beautiful relationships blossom only at the most opportune time, wishing them good luck. Zhou Jingmang seemed to only partially grasp the meaning, but Zhang Yang nodded, indicating his clear understanding.
The next day, Zhang Yang arrived at the classroom bright and early for the tutoring Zhou Jingmang had offered. He presented her with a strict contract he had drafted. The agreement stipulated that Zhang Yang would adhere to Zhou Jingmang's study plans and diligently work towards completing them. The critical clause stated that if Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang did not get into the same college, he would never be able to dance again.
When Zhou Jingmang expressed concern about the harshness of the terms, Zhang Yang dismissed her worries, emphasizing that being able to attend the same college as her was an extremely important matter to him. From that day forward, Zhang Yang dedicated himself to his studies with newfound vigor. He was seen diligently working, even during mealtimes, and asked Zhuang Jie to quiz him on various subjects.
He refused distractions like listening to music until he had finished his assigned reading, determined to combine work with rest as their teacher advised. His academic performance showed clear and significant improvement. As the mini university entrance exam approached, which would determine the caliber of universities they could qualify for, their teacher stressed the importance of achieving high scores, particularly A+ grades, for admission into prestigious Project 985 colleges.
Zhou Jingmang expressed her ambition to attend a university in Beijing, citing its academic excellence and fierce competition. She also reminded Zhang Yang that he had once mentioned wanting to go to Beijing to become a trainee, suggesting it could be an ideal place for him to advance his dancing skills. Finding her reasoning amusing, Zhang Yang playfully dismissed her seriousness, stating that excellent dance clubs could be found everywhere, not just in Beijing.
He then asked her to close her eyes and spontaneously name a place where she envisioned living happily. Her immediate response was "The ocean." Zhang Yang then suggested Xiamen, a city by the sea, praising its beautiful scenery, inspiring environment, and impressive dance clubs. Zhou Jingmang agreed, and they formalized their decision by writing "Xiamen" as their target destination on a piece of paper.
On the day of the high school level test, Zhou Jingmang’s parents offered her numerous reminders and advice, urging her not to be nervous and to double-check her test supplies. Despite their desire to accompany her, Zhou Jingmang insisted on going alone, explaining that the exam was held at their own school, a familiar environment, and she wanted to spare them the trouble. She reassured them she would do well.
As she headed to the exam room, she met Zhang Yang on the stairs, who offered her fried dough sticks, playfully suggesting they would bring her a perfect score of 100. They shared the fried dough sticks and soup on the stairs, both smiling. After the exam, Zhang Yang called Zhou Jingmang, cleverly impersonating Ling Chen. Zhou Jingmang's parents, believing the call was about comparing test answers, did not intervene.
Zhang Yang, still in character, informed her that he felt he had done very well after comparing his answers online. He also shared the significant news that he had saved enough money for tuition and rent, and as a result, had ceased performing shows. When the exam results were posted, Zhou Jingmang eagerly searched for Zhang Yang’s grades first, finding that he had passed with a mix of B's and a C, which she celebrated.
Realizing she hadn't checked her own scores, she was surprised when Zhang Yang, who had been observing her, revealed that she had achieved all A+'s. Overjoyed, Zhou Jingmang immediately thought about her mother returning her phone, which had been confiscated. They agreed to celebrate their success later. That evening, her mother indeed returned her phone, reminding her to sustain her excellent academic performance for the upcoming university entrance exam.
While waiting for Zhang Yang by the statue, Zhou Jingmang inadvertently overheard a junior student confessing her feelings to Li Yu Xiang. Li Yu Xiang politely declined, encouraging the girl to focus on her studies and stating that Zhou Jingmang was in his past.
However, the junior student pointed out that his online posts were consistently about Zhou Jingmang, prompting Li Yu Xiang to admit he was a poor example and didn't want others to experience the pain and academic disruption he had. Although Zhou Jingmang tried to remain unnoticed, Li Yu Xiang spotted her and took her hand.
He held her hand for a minute, confiding that he had received a 'B' in a recent course and needed good luck for his upcoming university entrance exams, and adding, "I always felt that you're the best." Unbeknownst to them, Zhang Yang witnessed this entire exchange from a distance and, misinterpreting the interaction, turned and walked away. After Li Yu Xiang left, Zhou Jingmang waited a long time for Zhang Yang, but he never appeared.
Upon returning to the classroom, she learned from classmates that Zhang Yang had already left, as there were no classes that afternoon. That night, with her phone finally returned, she immediately called Zhang Yang, only to find his phone turned off. Her earlier joy at getting her phone back vanished, replaced by sadness and worry. Meanwhile, Qin Zhen and Zhuang Jie were having a meal.
Qin Zhen noticed Yu Hui Tong's bruised arm, which Yu Hui Tong explained was from practicing injections on herself. Qin Zhen then brought up Zhang Yang's sudden disappearance, noting how worried Zhou Jingmang was. Zhuang Jie revealed that Zhang Yang had gone to Nanjing for classes during the break and had specifically informed him, though he admitted he didn't know why Zhang Yang hadn't told Zhou Jingmang.
Later, to prove his friendship, Zhuang Jie offered his arm for Yu Hui Tong to practice her injections, contrasting himself with Zhang Yang's perceived unreliability. During a quiet moment, Zhou Jingmang found an opportune time to bury a small iron box beneath a tree on the school grounds, alone. Years later, in 2015, Zhou Jingmang led Zhang Yang back to their old school, where she excitedly unearthed the iron box she had buried.
Inside were letters she had written to him during high school. She explained that many of the questions she had posed in the letters had already been answered by him in person. However, she hesitated to show him the parts discussing dancing, fearing it might touch upon painful memories for him. In response, Zhang Yang gently pulled her into an embrace and kissed her. The following day, Zhou Jingmang accompanied Zhang Yang to Shen Yinghui’s dance studio.
Shen Yinghui warmly welcomed them, expressing her concern that her current choreography felt "fragmented" and lacked impact for an upcoming demonstration to investors. Zhang Yang offered to help her with the choreography. Considering the need for a stronger performance, Shen Yinghui then suggested inviting Li Yu Xiang to join them in the dance.
Episode 21 Recap
After learning from Qin Zhen that Zhang Yang had quietly gone to Nanjing to study, Zhou Jingmang felt dispirited. Her mother noticed her lack of energy and proposed a trip to the beach city of Yancheng. Zhou Jingmang agreed, realizing Yancheng was not far from Nanjing. Upon arrival, she feigned a stomachache, telling her mother she'd stay in the hotel room while her parents went out. She then secretly bought a bus ticket to Nanjing, intending to find Zhang Yang.
However, she absentmindedly left a letter for her parents and the bus ticket in the hotel room. At the bus station, she discovered her mistake and had to return. By the time she found the ticket near her letter, the bus had already departed, leaving her frustrated, and she crumpled the ticket in anger. She tried calling Zhang Yang, but his phone was unavailable, so she sent him multiple messages, repeatedly asking, "Where are you?
Why did you disappear all of a sudden?" and confiding in her thoughts, "I really miss you." As Zhou Jingmang sat disheartened by the ocean, having received no reply to her numerous messages, Zhang Yang unexpectedly appeared. He explained that Qin Zhen had informed him of her trip to Yancheng, and given the city's size, he had found her quickly.
Overwhelmed by a mix of anger and surprise, Zhou Jingmang questioned why he had failed to show up as promised, hadn't contacted her, and hadn't responded to her messages. When he tried to playfully deflect, she angrily pushed him. Zhang Yang had been waiting for her on the beach for a long time until his stomach rumbled, when Zhou Jingmang finally returned with a bento. They reconciled and played joyfully by the water.
Zhang Yang mentioned he might be absent from school during their third year to prepare for his arts exam, reiterating their promise to work hard together. Zhou Jingmang, however, pressed him to get a working SIM card, expressing her intense worry when she couldn't reach him. Skeptical, Zhang Yang asked if she was truly worried. Zhou Jingmang insisted she was, citing the countless messages and calls she had made.
Realizing this, Zhang Yang took her phone to see the messages, then sincerely apologized for his thoughtlessness and for disappearing without explanation. He promised not to do it again and expressed his belief that "Xiamen's ocean view is better than this," reinforcing their shared goal. On the first day of their third year, Zhou Jingmang arrived with numerous health supplements, explaining that her mother wanted her to stay healthy and she brought extras for her friends.
Shortly after, a classmate informed her that Xiao Teacher Ma wanted to see her in his office. Feeling anxious, Zhou Jingmang wondered if she was in trouble. To her immense surprise, Xiao Teacher Ma presented her with a copy of a magazine, announcing that her novel had been published. He praised her for continuing her writing despite her heavy academic workload and congratulated her. Overjoyed, Zhou Jingmang's first thought was to share the news with Zhang Yang.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yang had bought a new SIM card and was persistently trying to call Zhou Jingmang, but she kept hanging up, mistaking his calls for spam. Finally, Zhang Yang managed to get through, and Zhou Jingmang excitedly shared her news. Zhang Yang then went to a newsstand and persuaded someone to let him have a copy of the magazine. Later that evening, Zhou Jingmang proudly showed the published novel to Shen Yinghui, who greatly admired the unique title.
Zhou Jingmang confessed that the title was Zhang Yang's idea. That same night, Zhang Yang returned to the school campus. They met briefly, speaking on the phone while standing apart. Zhang Yang congratulated her again, and Zhou Jingmang expressed her belief in his future success. Following a disappointing monthly exam where her scores were not good, a discouraged Zhou Jingmang was approached by Xiao Teacher Ma.
He offered her a chance to apply for Xiamen University's independent admissions program, encouraging her to work hard. Zhou Jingmang, thrilled at the prospect of Xiamen, eagerly accepted, promising to work harder. Zhang Yang, initially pleased for Zhou Jingmang, discretely inquired among his peers and discovered that Xiamen University did not offer a dance major.
Unaware of this, Zhou Jingmang redoubled her efforts in her studies, finding motivation by looking at Zhang Yang's photo whenever she felt tired, recalling his words about Xiamen's ocean view. On the day of the Xiamen University independent admissions exam, she performed well and successfully passed. Soon after, Shen Yinghui brought her a Xiamen University recruitment brochure. To her dismay, Zhou Jingmang quickly realized from the brochure that Xiamen University indeed lacked a dance department.
Distraught, she immediately rushed off to confront Xiao Teacher Ma. Years later, in 2015, Shen Yinghui arranged a meeting with Li Yu Xiang. Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui noticed Zhang Yang's subtle jealousy towards Li Yu Xiang, and playfully teased him. Li Yu Xiang arrived with his girlfriend, Tian Zhu, who expressed her excitement to finally meet the legendary Zhang Yang in person.
Tian Zhu openly admired Zhang Yang, telling Zhou Jingmang she had good taste and that Zhang Yang was even more handsome than in his photos. Shen Yinghui playfully remarked on how the boys hadn't matured, observing their lingering competitiveness. Despite the playful banter and teasing, the group, now grown, had reconciled their past grievances, signaling a new, mature dynamic among them.
Episode 22 Recap
In the winter of 2009, Zhou Jingmang announced to her parents that she no longer wished to attend Xianan University but instead intended to apply to Huaqing University. Her mother found this decision impulsive and questioned why Zhou Jingmang had gone straight to her teacher without discussing it with them first. Her father, however, believed Zhou Jingmang was merely using the Xianan University entrance exam as practice to assess her current academic standing before the actual college entrance exams.
Zhou Jingmang confirmed this, explaining her desire to test her abilities and her preference for Huaqing University's literature program. Her parents eventually accepted her decision, advising her to work hard and avoid future regrets. While Zhou Jingmang was studying during a meal, Li Yuxiang approached her and sat opposite her. He expressed surprise at her decision to give up her spot at Xianan University after being so motivated to succeed.
He then directly asked if her choice was influenced by Zhang Yang. Zhou Jingmang, without hesitation, admitted that it was, stating that because of Zhang Yang, she aspired to become a better version of herself, which she felt was nothing to be ashamed of. Later, Zhang Yang sent Zhou Jingmang a text message asking her to meet him at the teaching building. She immediately dropped her meal and hurried there.
Zhang Yang confronted her, questioning why she had forfeited her admission to Xianan University. Zhou Jingmang fabricated an excuse, claiming Huaqing University was also excellent and renowned for its dance department. Zhang Yang did not press the matter further. Instead, he handed her an apple, calling it a source of nutrients and an early Christmas Eve gift. Meanwhile, Ling Chen paid for Shen Yinghui's milk tea.
He also presented her with an IOU for his father's medical expenses, explaining that due to upcoming college exams and future expenses, immediate repayment wasn't possible, but he assured her he would pay it back. Shen Yinghui's attitude towards him was noticeably softer than before, and she inquired if he needed a favor from her. Ling Chen gave a self-deprecating laugh, revealing that his father's hospitalization might be long-term, and they might need her parents' assistance again.
He then quickly departed. As Qin Zhen was asking for directions, she noticed Ling Chen struggling with his belongings and kindly offered her help. Ling Chen misinterpreted her offer as pity and reacted rudely, stating that only the weak needed help and he disliked being looked down upon. Qin Zhen waited for him to come out, attempting to explain that her intentions were not as he perceived, and that she had admired him since their tenth year.
She even expressed a desire to be friends with him. However, Ling Chen refused to listen, asserting that he didn't need friends and that she shouldn't waste her time and energy on him, as they were merely classmates. Walking back from school, Zhang Yang presented Zhou Jingmang with a variety of amulets he claimed to have bought from a struggling old man, saying they were colorful and girls would like them, despite being useless.
Zhou Jingmang discovered one labeled "Love" and decided to keep it. She offered to give him a gift in return, but Zhang Yang declined. Instead, he asked to tie her hair, mentioning he had been inspired during dance practice. He meticulously braided her hair, and Zhou Jingmang expressed her surprise that he possessed such a skill. He then playfully told her to look into his eyes, calling them a mirror.
News broke that Qin Zhen, a nursing student, had been hit by a car while saving someone on the street and was hospitalized. Zhou Jingmang, upon hearing the news, rushed to the hospital to see her. Simultaneously, Ling Chen also learned about the incident from his classmates. Feeling uneasy, he feigned a stomachache and requested a day off from Xiao Teacher Ma to visit the hospital. At the hospital, Zhou Jingmang found Shen Yinghui already by Qin Zhen's bedside.
Qin Zhen recounted the events of the previous day, mentioning she saw Ling Chen struggling before the accident. She explained that her parents were away on business, so she had asked the hospital to contact Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui. Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui recounted that their phones were off, but Director Zhou had helped with the hospital procedures.
Qin Zhen downplayed her injuries, though she admitted she was in pain and would need to be hospitalized for several months. Soon after, Zhuang Jie arrived with snacks, but the nurse confiscated them. Zhuang Jie, however, had a hidden bag of snacks in his pocket, which they all shared, laughing and joking despite Qin Zhen's injury. Zhuang Jie even made a playful toast to Qin Zhen for surviving the disaster.
Later, Ling Chen quietly entered Qin Zhen's room, having evaded Zhuang Jie, Shen Yinghui, and Zhou Jingmang. Qin Zhen, ever kind, reassured him that her injury had nothing to do with him, saying it was her choice to follow him. Ling Chen, in his characteristic proud manner, agreed, stating that it was indeed her decision and had no connection to him, reminding her that he had warned her not to follow him.
He expressed relief that she was fine and wished her a swift recovery. Just then, Zhuang Jie, who had been nearby, confronted Ling Chen, accusing him of causing Qin Zhen's injury for selfish reasons and trying to shirk responsibility. Ling Chen defiantly asked if there was anything wrong with acting for oneself. He provoked Zhuang Jie, daring him to hit him and promising to make him pay for his hospital fees, claiming everyone looked down on him anyway.
Qin Zhen intervened, persuading Zhuang Jie to let Ling Chen go, reminding him they were in a hospital and that Ling Chen hadn't acted intentionally. Zhuang Jie, frustrated, called Ling Chen a coward, declaring he wasn't afraid of him. After Ling Chen left, Qin Zhen told Zhuang Jie it was nothing, but Zhuang Jie called her "dumb" for smiling after Ling Chen's behavior.
Qin Zhen replied that with a friend like Zhuang Jie to protect her, she had nothing to fear. Zhuang Jie, again calling her dumb, offered to buy her food, mentioning he was going overseas to study, which meant their shared meals would become fewer. Qin Zhen promised to wait for his return at the hospital and treat him to a meal, sealing their friendship with a deal. Upon Zhang Yang's return to school, he surprised Zhou Jingmang with a necklace.
Zhou Jingmang noticed the letters on it were not a recognizable word. Zhang Yang explained they were the pinyin abbreviation for "Struggle," a Chinese television series, and that the necklace symbolized his wish for her to become "Zhou Jing Mang, the great writer." He suggested she wear it for the upcoming class meeting and group pledge.
As the college entrance exam approached with only a hundred days left, Xiao Teacher Ma organized an event where students could go to the school's highest point to loudly declare their aspirations. Zhang Yang was the first to volunteer. He spoke about his initial days as a rebellious student, uncertain of his path, only knowing what he didn't want.
He then credited a classmate with helping him find direction and solidify his future, which led him to excel in the arts examination. He concluded his heartfelt speech by sharing the encouraging words she had once given him: "No regrets in youth! No fears in youth! Don't be afraid! We can do it!" His words resonated deeply with everyone, and they responded with enthusiastic applause and cheers, repeating the empowering slogan.
In 2015, Shen Yinghui received news that the investors for their ballet performance felt it was "fine" but lacked "highlights," granting them only three more days to revise it. A team member suggested pooling personal funds, but Shen Yinghui dismissed the idea, emphasizing that if their work couldn't move investors, it couldn't move others, thereby negating their efforts to commemorate their youth. Li Yuxiang agreed, reminding them that while they used to struggle alone, they now had each other.
They decided to work overtime to improve the performance. That night, Zhang Yang, unable to sleep due to a creative block in his choreography, walked out of the dance studio. Zhou Jingmang, hearing the commotion, followed him. He expressed his frustration with a particular, consistently problematic part of the dance, admitting he felt disheartened despite working hard. Zhou Jingmang tried to comfort him and urged him to sleep. Zhang Yang then revealed that despite the current heartache, he felt happy.
When asked why, he explained he was thinking about the future, not just the past. This conversation sparked a new idea: to not only dance the story of their past but also their present and future, much like Zhou Jingmang's continuously evolving novel. Zhou Jingmang, however, commented that their past seemed more exciting than their current, seemingly plain life.
Zhang Yang countered, saying that meeting her again had made his life splendid, and he believed she shone even brighter now than in the past. Zhou Jingmang playfully questioned if his words were romantic or a confession, to which he affirmed they were both "romantic words and the most sincere words." Inspired, Zhang Yang gathered the team and presented his new vision for the ballet. Li Yuxiang expressed approval but suggested that Zhang Yang should also participate.
Zhang Yang initially hesitated, citing his leg injury, but Li Yuxiang argued that it was a performance of their shared story—past, present, and future—not a competition, and therefore everyone should be included. Convinced, Zhang Yang agreed to join the performance.
Episode 23 Recap
In the summer of 2010, Xiao Teacher Ma reminded students to prepare diligently for their last mock exam before the college entrance exam. Zhou Jingmang and Zhang Yang discussed grade matters, and Zhang Yang's casual attitude, asserting it was normal to have an off day, initially annoyed Zhou Jingmang. He quickly apologized. Noticing Zhou Jingmang's unwell appearance, Zhang Yang felt her forehead and discovered she had a fever. He insisted on personally escorting her home.
Soon after dropping Zhou Jingmang off, Zhang Yang received a phone call from his mother, urgently asking him to come home. Upon his arrival, his mother explained that his father’s business was facing financial difficulties, necessitating the collateralization of their house. They planned to move back to their old house. His father was waiting for him in the study, and during their conversation, he presented Zhang Yang with a registration form for a university art specialty camp.
His father intended to remind Zhang Yang to focus on the general college entrance exam and abandon the idea of pursuing a dance major. Zhang Yang disagreed, asserting his freedom to choose his own path and believing his father had no right to interfere. In a firm stance, his father revealed he had already canceled Zhang Yang's apartment lease. Angry, Zhang Yang stormed out of the house, bag in hand.
With nowhere else to go, Zhang Yang ended up at an internet cafe, where he unexpectedly encountered Ling Chen. After recovering, Zhou Jingmang returned to school, unaware of the turmoil in Zhang Yang's life. During early self-study, she attempted to quiz him on political knowledge. Zhang Yang, having spent his nights at the internet cafe, was sleep-deprived and in poor condition, giving poor answers and showing annoyance. He even fell asleep.
Zhou Jingmang had prepared a gift for him, but he was too distracted to notice. Before school ended, Zhang Yang packed his bag and left, informing Zhou Jingmang that he had taken leave and to call him if she needed anything. This unexplained departure left Zhou Jingmang unsettled throughout the day. Shen Yinghui confirmed Zhou Jingmang’s suspicions, mentioning that Zhang Yang had been acting unusually during her absence, frequently sleeping in class and leaving early.
Worried, Zhou Jingmang repeatedly tried to call Zhang Yang, but couldn't get through to him. Meanwhile, Zhang Yang called Li Yu Xiang, asking for money. Li Yu Xiang met him at the internet cafe and handed him the cash. Just as Li Yu Xiang left, Zhou Jingmang arrived at the internet cafe. Seeing Zhang Yang there, she mistakenly assumed he was playing games and confronted him.
They had a very unpleasant conversation, with Zhang Yang angered by her misunderstanding, and they parted unhappily. Later, Zhou Jingmang realized she had been too harsh. She waited outside the internet cafe for hours into the night, hoping Zhang Yang would emerge so she could apologize and encourage him to work hard again. However, he never came out. Zhang Yang was absent from school again, and his absence became a prolonged one, intensifying Zhou Jingmang’s worry.
Sometime later, Zhou Jingmang and Shen Yinghui witnessed a tense confrontation involving Zhang Yang, his father, and the principal. His father, in a fit of rage, slapped Zhang Yang, causing Zhou Jingmang to gasp in shock. Disturbed by the incident, Zhou Jingmang sought Zhang Yang out on the sports field for a talk. In a moment of desperation and without thinking, she blurted out that if he couldn't get into college, they couldn't be good friends anymore.
This statement deeply wounded Zhang Yang, who silently picked up his bag and walked away, leaving their relationship in a fragile state. For a long time after, Zhang Yang remained at the internet cafe, ignoring calls from his father. The next day, he called his mother, who informed him that his father had collapsed the previous night and was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction.
Zhang Yang then returned the money to Li Yu Xiang, saying he would find a way to repay the remaining amount later. Meanwhile, Zhou Jingmang immersed herself in studying, constantly doing practice problems. She declined invitations from Shen Yinghui and Qin Zhen to take graduation photos. Concerned about Zhou Jingmang's distracted state, Teacher Shi approached her for a heartfelt conversation, offering guidance. As a result, a rare smile appeared on Zhou Jingmang's face, signaling her gradual recovery.
In 2015, Zhou Jingmang received a package containing face masks sent by Zhang Yang. Shen Yinghui and Tian Zhu were envious of her. Yu Hui Tong then arrived to visit. Zhou Jingmang invited her to join their dance drama project, and Yu Hui Tong offered to provide suggestions for refining their story. The group agreed that Zhou Jingmang herself should also join, emphasizing that they were all indispensable parts of their shared youth. Later, after practicing dance, the group celebrated over dinner. Ling Chen, who had been absent for a long time, also appeared.
Episode 24 (Ending) Recap
Ling Chen finally decided to reveal the truth that had been buried in his heart for years. He explained that before the college entrance exams, his father needed a substantial amount of money for surgery. Ling Chen was living in an internet café, studying during the day and working at night, and was constantly exhausted. One day, he found a phone dropped on the ground outside the café and took it.
He approached Zhang Yang, asking for help to sell it, explaining his father's urgent need for money. Zhang Yang refused to split the money but agreed to help him return the phone to the owner for a reward. However, Zhang Yang was caught by the police before he could complete the task.
Ling Chen admitted he was terrified and didn't step forward to clarify, fearing that a school punishment would ruin his chances of getting into a good university and securing funds for his father's treatment. He confessed that Zhang Yang never implicated him. After sharing his burden, Ling Chen was visibly drunk, and Zhang Yang asked Zhuang Jie and Li Yu Xiang to take him home. Upon hearing the full story, Zhou Jingmang realized she had gravely misunderstood Zhang Yang.
She then recounted her own experiences from that period. After her illness, she had gone to his rental apartment but found he had already moved out. The landlady handed her a package, which she later discovered contained photos Zhang Yang had mentioned as a surprise for her. Seeing them, Zhou Jingmang couldn't help but think of him and cried, recalling their shared memories. Eventually, she composed herself and focused on preparing for the college entrance exams.
The exams concluded, and Qin Zhen joined Shen Yinghui and Zhou Jingmang to celebrate. Using her new iPhone, Qin Zhen helped Zhou Jingmang check her university admission status. Zhou Jingmang was delighted to see she had been accepted into Huaqing University, but her joy turned to shock when she realized she was admitted to Business Management, not her preferred Chinese literature major.
She rushed home to confront her parents, who confessed they had unilaterally changed her application after discussing it with her teacher, believing it was for her own good. Zhou Jingmang, furious, argued vehemently with her father, who, in a fit of rage, threw the items Zhang Yang had given her out the window, citing her "rebellious stage" and past "distractions." Zhou Jingmang immediately ran outside, but most of the items had been picked up.
She then remembered a special notebook and rushed to school to look for it. A staff member explained that all desks had been cleared out for the exams. Just as despair set in, Ling Chen appeared and returned her notebook, explaining that Li Yu Xiang had given it to him. Zhang Yang had entrusted the notebook to Li Yu Xiang to give to Zhou Jingmang. Clutching the recovered notebook in an empty classroom, Zhou Jingmang wept uncontrollably.
The bittersweet memories she shared with Zhang Yang, once a source of happiness, now brought her profound sadness. Soon after, her parents tearfully saw Zhou Jingmang off to Huaqing University, her first time living so far from home. In her dormitory, she quickly befriended her roommate, Tian Zhu, who enthusiastically shared gifts and introduced her to Renren. com, a social media platform common among university students, suggesting she could use it to search for Zhang Yang.
However, Zhou Jingmang's search yielded no results. Meanwhile, Zhang Yang was struggling financially, working various performances to make money. He often ate instant noodles and pushed himself to perform despite his declining health. During one performance, he collapsed on stage, falling and severely injuring his ligament, which meant he could no longer pursue dancing. On campus, Zhou Jingmang ran into Li Yu Xiang, who had also enrolled at Huaqing, motivated by her decision to forgo Xiamen's independent enrollment.
When he asked about her major, Zhou Jingmang dejectedly admitted it was Business Management, much to his surprise as he had assumed she would study Chinese literature. Later, her counselor called her into the office to discuss her poor academic performance, noting a failed midterm. While in the office, Zhou Jingmang noticed a classmate submitting a transfer application.
Inspired, she decided to rededicate herself to her studies, aiming to transfer to the Chinese department, promising her counselor she would not fail her finals. Zhou Jingmang reflected on how her conversation with the counselor made her realize she needed to change. Filling out the transfer application reignited her passion, mirroring her determination during the college exams. She envisioned restarting her novel writing and even imagined a future reunion with Zhang Yang at a book signing.
She then shared a lighthearted moment with Zhang Yang, teasing him about how he "beautified himself" in her novel, to which he retorted she did the same in her distant demeanor. Zhang Yang then revealed that after his leg injury and his father's business improved, he returned to studies, taking correspondence courses to prepare for the judicial exam, having given up dancing. Zhou Jingmang emphasized that after all their efforts, they couldn't afford to disappoint themselves.
Zhang Yang earnestly promised not to disappoint anyone again, especially her. Three months later, Shen Yinghui's ballet performance officially premiered. The audience, including Zhou Jingmang's parents and Teacher Shi, applauded their acclaimed performance. Afterward, Shen Yinghui suggested playing a game where everyone wrote their dream on a slip of paper. Both Zhang Yang and Zhou Jingmang secretly wrote each other's names. Zhou Jingmang's parents then approached Zhang Yang, entrusting him with a gift box for their daughter.
Zhou Jingmang opened it to find the very items her father had thrown away during their argument. Her parents admitted they had felt profound guilt after their quarrel and had painstakingly collected these items. Inside the box was also a letter from her father, expressing his deep regret for interfering with her college choices and discarding her belongings. He explained their actions stemmed from being first-time parents who were simply trying to ensure her well-being and future.
He apologized and promised that he and her mother would no longer interfere with her dreams. At this opportune moment, Zhang Yang took out a ring. He confessed his imperfections and pledged to give her his best, then asked, "Will you marry me?" Zhou Jingmang, without a word, slid the ring onto her finger, pulled Zhang Yang closer, and gently kissed him on the lips. The past was behind them, but a beautiful future lay ahead, proving that it's never too late for good things to begin.
