Rui Zhen, Mu Yi, and other Yanshi Fan members carried out orders to eliminate Imperial party members and their families. Chongliming returned home to find his entire family massacred, with his father, Shen Xiu, deceased in the ancestral hall. Overwhelmed with grief, Chongliming cried out for his father, recalling his father's earnest teachings and becoming utterly heartbroken and lost all hope. The Empress Dowager passed away, and the news brought widespread mourning among officials.

Soon after, a young emperor ascended the throne, with the Regent taking charge of the court. Lord Zhe Yu was preparing a gift, consulting Yuchu on its suitability. Yuchu mentioned that Rui Zhen, the Jiumen Governor, was waiting to see him. Zhe Yu acknowledged the shift in political landscape with the Regent in power. Rui Zhen and Mu Yi approached Lord Zhe Yu, offering him their keys to the Yanshi Fan's secret order for safekeeping.

Rui Zhen asserted that he and Mu Yi, along with other members, wished for Zhe Yu to manage the organization, but he was most uncertain about Chongliming. Zhe Yu, understanding that all three keys were required to activate the secret order, declined to accept the two keys from Rui Zhen, making it clear that his holding them would be futile and that Rui Zhen needed to secure Chongliming's cooperation first, as Chongliming's intentions were unpredictable.

Having lost both his confidant, Shulutai, and his father overnight, Chongliming, distraught, sought solace in drink at Shanglin Xianguan. Xian Er observed his profound grief, expressing that while she didn't know the specifics, she felt his deep pain and sadness. Chongliming poured out his heart, lamenting the deaths of the Emperor, his elder brother Shulutai, and his father, questioning the meaning of his own life. Xian Er compassionately joined him in drinking, saying she would get drunk with him.

Later, at Old Horse Head's mutton soup shop, the old man, seeing Chongliming's excessive drinking, lovingly prepared millet porridge for him, advising him to nourish his stomach. Chongliming, despite his outward claim of being fine, felt an unprecedented loneliness and despair. Old Horse Head tried to comfort him, suggesting that life has its ups and downs, and that a good night's sleep after drinking could bring a fresh start.

Yet, Chongliming's profound sense of disillusionment was evident as he repeatedly stated, "Despair is illusory, hope is equally so," a sentiment Old Horse Head couldn't grasp. Lord Zhe Yu sought to curry favor with the Regent, visiting his residence and proposing that the Six Ministries be filled with their trusted individuals, who would then be cultivated to serve the Emperor. Zhe Yu expressed difficulty in commanding Yanshi Fan, noting its traditional loyalty to the Emperor.

The Regent, however, already knew that Rui Zhen had approached Zhe Yu, which Zhe Yu reluctantly confirmed, claiming it was merely a courtesy visit to the Regent. Meanwhile, an imperial edict from the Empress Dowager arrived, appointing Eerji Chongliming as the 16th leader of Yanshi Fan for his meritorious service. Yet, Chongliming was too incapacitated by drink to properly receive the decree.

Rui Zhen, who had long coveted the position of Yanshi Fan leader, was greatly displeased by Chongliming's appointment, believing Lord Deqi had influenced it. He voiced his frustration, having waited so many years for the role, and decided with his allies to seek Lord Zhe Yu's help in countering Lord Deqi. Awakened from a nightmare of Shulutai's and his father's deaths, Chongliming was consumed by sorrow. Yuchu found him in a deplorable state, indifferent to the widespread rumors outside.

She tried to offer comfort, suggesting he confide in her, but he remained unresponsive. Determined to rouse him, Yuchu insisted he go out for a change of scenery, proposing various activities like horseback riding or hunting. Chongliming, overwhelmed with frustration and pain, asked to be left alone. When Yuchu persisted, physically attempting to pull him from his bed, a guard interrupted, conveying Lord Deqi's summons to his palace. Chongliming, citing dizziness, refused, but the guards forcibly escorted him there.

Later, Yuchu reported Chongliming's grim condition to Lord Zhe Yu, who speculated about Chongliming's true intentions and loyalty. Zhe Yu, while acknowledging Chongliming's capabilities, stressed that an unloyal Chongliming would be dangerous and must not be allowed to become an asset to Lord Deqi, instructing Yuchu to monitor him closely. At Lord Deqi's palace, Chongliming was compelled to drink a sobering broth.

Lord Deqi confronted him about his refusal to accept the imperial edict appointing him as Yanshi Fan leader, a position Chongliming felt unworthy of. Addressing the rumors that Chongliming had poisoned Shulutai, Lord Deqi stated his disbelief and urged Chongliming to recount the events. Chongliming confessed his intention was to rescue Shulutai, but Shulutai, to save Chongliming, had deliberately ingested poison. Consumed by grief, Chongliming's primary desire was to avenge his father.

Lord Deqi revealed that Chongliming's father, Shen Xiu's, efforts to form a palace fire brigade to protect the Emperor had been discovered. Following the Emperor's death and the subsequent purge of all Imperial party members, Shen Xiu met an unavoidable fate. Lord Deqi then conveyed the Empress Dowager's oral instruction: Chongliming was to accept the leadership of Yanshi Fan and investigate the Emperor's rumored poisoning.

Chongliming conceded, but only on the condition that he be permitted to fully reorganize Yanshi Fan, a condition Lord Deqi accepted, remarking that its success would depend entirely on Chongliming's capabilities. Chongliming, now formally taking on the role of Yanshi Fan leader, gathered his friends, including Si San, Wen Gou, and Ke Yan Xin.

He announced that they would all become new members of Yanshi Fan, but on the condition that they first gather incriminating evidence against specific high-ranking individuals on a list he provided, which included Minerhacha (Prince of Minerchaha County), Fuxiang (internal minister of the leading guard), and Xu Tong (green camp commander). He also cautioned them to be discreet and avoid drawing attention.

During an internal meeting of Yanshi Fan, Chongliming officially demanded the secret order keys from Rui Zhen and Mu Yi. When Rui Zhen initially refused, citing tradition, Chongliming asserted his authority, presenting the Empress Dowager's imperial edict. Seeing the edict, Rui Zhen and Mu Yi, prompted by Mu Yi's instruction, reluctantly knelt and surrendered the keys. Chongliming then declared that his rules were now Yanshi Fan's rules.

Elsewhere, the new Emperor's ascension brought a general amnesty, leading to A Yi's release from imprisonment. San Zhang reported to Lian Er that the Crown Prince was coming, signalling potential trouble for their clandestine activities, and Lian Er resolved to confront him. In the streets, A Yi was urgently searching for Da Sha when he encountered Yuchu again. She inquired about his identity and haste. A Yi, identifying himself as A Yi, explained that Da Sha was missing.

Noticing A Yi's gaze towards sugar-coated haws, Yuchu kindly bought him one. Shortly after, a group from the Green Gang confronted A Yi, claiming to have Da Sha and making provocative remarks. A Yi quickly retaliated, overpowering them and dragging their leader towards the Green Gang's premises.
