Can Yan Xin collapsed from exhaustion, prompting Chong Liming to desperately call out to him, urging him not to fall asleep. Wagner eventually located a blood vessel and began surgery to remove the bullet. Tragically, Can Yan Xin, who had confessed to Chong Liming about smoking opium and owing Wagner money, asking Chong Liming to settle his debts, died from severe blood loss.

Wagner was deeply distraught, pounding his chest in grief, while Chong Liming, heartbroken, gently closed Can Yan Xin's eyes. Chong Liming then turned to Wagner, confirming the Beiyang Army was advancing, and declared they would kill every enemy to avenge Can Yan Xin. The Beiyang Army launched another attack, and Chong Liming, suppressing his sorrow, charged forward with Wagner. A Yi led the National Guard Army, fighting bravely. As the Beiyang forces swelled, the battle descended into brutal hand-to-hand combat.

When two enemies rushed Wagner, A Yi swiftly shot them down. Wagner continued to fight but was soon hit again, falling to the ground. Chong Liming watched his brothers fall one by one around him, his heart filled with anguish. With A Yi's arm wounded, Chong Liming quickly moved him into a trench. The two men drew their bayonets, preparing for a final stand against the encroaching enemy.

Just then, Zhou Jue and General Song arrived with crucial reinforcements, causing the Beiyang Army to retreat without further fight. General Song commended Chong Liming and A Yi for their heroic defense of the position. He recognized Chong Liming as Er Ji Chong Liming and A Yi as Yi Xintian, acknowledging their respective backgrounds. General Song then addressed the soldiers, calling for a salute to the martyrs who had sacrificed for the Republic.

He spoke of the arduous National Guard War and the unwavering spirit of the young soldiers who, despite heavy casualties, fought without fear, embodying the victory of will and spirit. He passionately proclaimed that the wisdom, wealth, and strength of the youth determine the nation's future, urging every National Guard soldier to maintain a youthful heart and ambition, to struggle bravely and move forward without hesitation.

He stressed that their fight was not for a single victory but for the dignity of the entire populace, and that in these turbulent times, one should act boldly and fearlessly according to moral conscience. He exhorted them to "move forward steadfastly instead of looking back, abandon darkness and embrace light," using powerful means with a compassionate heart, to overcome evil with justice and distortion with righteousness.

Chong Liming and the other soldiers were deeply moved, echoing the call to be "without failing today, without failing the people's expectations, without failing the nation," and that "juvenile independence means national independence." Meanwhile, Qinger held a painting of pansies, a gift from Wagner from their past, remembering his words about the flowers symbolizing "eternal missing and silent love," and she wept, lost in memories. With the Qing Dynasty thoroughly overthrown and warlord factions fragmenting the country, chaos reigned.

The emperor was expelled from the Forbidden City, and palace staff departed. Chong Liming, broom in hand, meticulously cleaned the desolate palace. A Yi arrived, explaining the current political landscape. Sun Yat-sen had decided to launch a Northern Expedition to unify China and had established a military academy in Guangzhou. Zhou Jue had recommended A Yi as an instructor there to train the future backbone of the revolutionary army.

A Yi urged Chong Liming to join him in Guangzhou, emphasizing that the Forbidden City held nothing left for him to cherish. Chong Liming initially declined, stating that he understood A Yi's motivations but their paths were different. A Yi countered by reminding him of their shared struggles on the battlefield, how they had raised their guns and faced death together, and quoted General Song's inspiring words about moving towards light and not failing the nation's expectations.

Chong Liming wandered through the imperial palace, his mind swirling with thoughts of his uncertain future. He questioned his purpose and whether the nation still needed him. In a moment of reflection, he envisioned his former mentor, Shuertai, approaching him. Shuertai observed that Chong Liming had changed over the years and, knowing Chong Liming's past question about the nation's direction, believed Chong Liming now held the answer in his heart.

Shuertai encouraged him to "set up a heart for Heaven and Earth, and a life for the common people, for in setting up heart and life, one sees the Light," and urged him to move forward. Chong Liming, profoundly impacted by these words, realized that his own heart was what held him back.

He decided that A Yi's chosen path was the righteous one, admitting he had been unwilling to acknowledge it, and that it was time to embrace a new era. He then saw a vision of his father, Shen Xiu, who, despite Chong Liming's apologies for potentially disappointing him, affirmed his decision, calling him the pillar of the Er Ji family and encouraging him to live well and move forward.

Arriving at the Shenji camp mansion, Chong Liming then saw Yu Chu, who playfully chided him for his reluctance, asking if he feared losing his friends or her by leaving. She reminded him of his promise to take her to the sea and encouraged him to leave the past behind, assuring him she would accompany him. Finally, Si San, Wen Gou, Can Yan Xin, and Wagner appeared, vibrant and alive, urging him to not dwell in silence.

They celebrated, took photos, and shared a drink, reminding Chong Liming that they had never betrayed their ideals and that the country was finally seeing light. Wen Gou expressed his gratitude for following Chong Liming, while Wagner, Can Yan Xin, and Si San all collectively implored Chong Liming to look only forward, never back, as they would always be with him.

As Chong Liming tearfully bid them farewell and opened the grand gates, a ray of sunlight streamed in, and his beloved friends vanished, leaving him heartbroken but resolute. Chong Liming then spotted A Yi waiting in the distance. Without hesitation, he walked towards his brother. A Yi extended his hand, and they gripped each other firmly, sharing a knowing smile.

In 1924, Chong Liming and A Yi embarked together for the Southern Military Academy, courageously leading the Eastern and Northern Expeditions, and ultimately dedicating themselves to the sweeping New Democratic Revolution.
