Ke Yan Xin awkwardly stitched Wagner's wound, noting it was slightly infected but assuring him it would be fine after cleaning. Wagner, feeling numb, endured the pain as Ke Yan Xin worked. Afterwards, Wagner reminisced about his lost friend, Si San, expressing deep sorrow. He recalled their childhood rivalry, how despite their families being political opponents, he and Si San would constantly fight, ending up bruised and beaten, only to face parental punishments and repeat the cycle.
Ke Yan Xin commented on their seeming honesty, but Wagner described Si San as cunning. Wagner shared a memory of Si San luring him to Willow Hutong with a plan to hire hooligans to beat him, but Si San had no money. They both ended up running naked from the hired thugs through the streets, an embarrassing but deeply etched memory. Overwhelmed by grief, Wagner cried out that Si San was gone, and Ke Yan Xin wept with him.
Meanwhile, A Yi and Zhou Jue discussed the aftermath of A Yi's team successfully bombing the Beiyang Army's arsenal, which had boosted the National Guard Army's morale and provided a three-day respite. A Yi expressed his desire to go find Chong Liming after his mission. Zhou Jue, however, revealed that the enemy's radio communications had dramatically increased, suggesting significant strategic troop movements.
He implored A Yi to stay and use his specialized training to decipher the encrypted codes, as the communication unit's soldiers lacked the necessary expertise. Zhou Jue stressed that this was a personal request, not an order, highlighting the critical importance of A Yi's skill. A Yi acknowledged the enemy activity but reaffirmed his commitment to finding Chong Liming.
Zhou Jue argued that Chong Liming had been in the city for eight days without eliminating Yang Zhen, implying A Yi’s attempt might be futile. A Yi, however, strongly believed in Chong Liming's ability, recalling how Chong Liming had saved him in Beijing, exposed foreign plots in Nanan, and influenced the North-South peace talks in Shanghai. Despite Zhou Jue pointing out the difference of operating behind enemy lines, A Yi insisted that Chong Liming always accomplished his goals.
Zhou Jue then invited A Yi to inspect the front lines with him. Chong Liming, Ke Yan Xin, and Wen Gou deliberated on their next move. Wagner, eager for revenge for Si San, wanted to immediately confront Yang Zhen. Chong Liming cautioned against a rash attack, warning it would be a trap. He proposed finding a hidden place to monitor the Beiyang Army, believing an opportunity to kill Yang Zhen would arise.
Wagner and Ke Yan Xin countered that if they lost track of Yang Zhen now, he might rise in rank, making him even harder to eliminate in the future. Chong Liming conceded and agreed to move forward. He tasked Wen Gou with staking out the county magistrate, while he and Ke Yan Xin would observe Yang Zhen's residence to learn his routines and contacts.
Wagner was instructed to rest and recover from his injuries, promising he would join them for the final act of revenge. Elsewhere, Fang Rulin executed the soldiers responsible for guarding the bombed arsenal. He appointed the Third Battalion commander to oversee logistics, strictly mandating that all arms be stored in underground fortifications.
Fang Rulin then questioned Yang Zhen, inquiring about the attack on the command post and suspecting that the group who had broken out of prison might have leaked the arsenal's location, which led to the explosion. Yang Zhen hastily denied any involvement, claiming he hadn't recognized Chong Liming's identity. He privately warned his subordinate not to reveal that Brilliant Situation was targeting him, fearing Fang Rulin would hold him accountable for the arsenal explosion.
The Beiyang Army conducted a house-to-house search for Chong Liming's group. In the ruined temple where Wagner was recovering, Wu Guan Jia quickly hid him among dead bodies. The soldiers entered, searching all the refugees, even checking dead bodies, for four spies, one with a right leg gunshot wound. Wu Guan Jia denied seeing anyone matching the description.
When a soldier found bloodied gauze in the backyard, Wu Guan Jia explained it was for treating the many injured refugees, claiming the cleaner back room was used for severe cases. A soldier attempted to remove bandages from a heavily bandaged figure (Wagner), but Wu Guan Jia intervened, explaining the man had severe burns and removing the bandages would cause infection.
Although the bandages were partially unwrapped, only burn wounds were visible, and the soldiers left without further inspection, still without their target. After the soldiers departed, Wagner carefully emerged from his hiding spot among the deceased. Chong Liming and Ke Yan Xin continued their surveillance of Yang Zhen's residence. They spotted Xian Er and her maid, Xiao Hong, leaving. Chong Liming secretly followed Xian Er's sedan chair to a clothing store.
He confronted Xian Er in a fitting room, pressing her about her presence in Nanan. Xian Er reluctantly admitted she had married Yang Zhen. Disappointed, Chong Liming declared his intent to kill Yang Zhen. Xian Er was shocked, questioning why he would harm someone he once considered a brother. Chong Liming revealed Yang Zhen's treachery four years prior in Shanghai, which resulted in Yu Chu's death.
As he spoke, Chong Liming noticed fresh bruises on Xian Er's body, realizing Yang Zhen had beaten her, a discovery that deeply saddened him. Xian Er, in turn, questioned why he had revealed his plan to her if he intended to kill Yang Zhen. Returning to the ruined temple, Chong Liming learned from Ke Yan Xin about the Beiyang Army's search and how Wu Guan Jia's quick thinking had saved Wagner.
Chong Liming then shared the news of Xian Er's marriage to Yang Zhen. Wagner reacted angrily, criticizing Chong Liming for revealing their plans to Xian Er, believing she could have been used to lure Yang Zhen. Chong Liming firmly refused to manipulate Xian Er, and Ke Yan Xin supported him, stating that their group operated with integrity and would not resort to such "dirty tricks." Meanwhile, at Yang Zhen's home, Xian Er was visibly troubled.
Yang Zhen, trying to appease her, presented her with new clothes and rare Yumifang beauty lotion, promising a peaceful life after the war. Xian Er accepted his gestures but remained reserved. Wen Gou and Ke Yan Xin reported their findings: the county magistrate and Yang Zhen's mansion were heavily fortified with numerous hidden sentries. Yang Zhen was always heavily protected when he ventured out, making an ambush in transit nearly impossible. Chong Liming then devised a new strategy.
Later, while Xian Er was washing Yang Zhen's feet, she subtly inquired why he had abandoned Brilliant Situation to join the Beiyang Army. Yang Zhen immediately grew suspicious, accusing her of meeting Chong Liming. Despite her denials, he flew into a rage and began to beat her. Their son, Fan Er, witnessed the assault and cried, which caused Yang Zhen to stop. Xian Er quickly took Fan Er away.
Xiao Hong urged Xian Er to leave Yang Zhen with Fan Er, reminding her of his unchanging abusive nature. Xian Er then confessed to Xiao Hong that she had indeed met Chong Liming. After Xian Er had put Fan Er to sleep, Yang Zhen repeatedly apologized to her, even kneeling and begging for forgiveness. Accustomed to his apologies, Xian Er stated her intention to take Fan Er to Luzhou for safety until the war ended, and Yang Zhen readily agreed.
That night, Wen Gou and Ke Yan Xin meticulously prepared explosives and secretly placed them in Yang Zhen's car. The following morning, Chong Liming and Ke Yan Xin waited in a building opposite Yang Zhen's residence. They watched as Yang Zhen escorted Xian Er and Fan Er towards his car.
Realizing the car contained explosives and would endanger them, Chong Liming fired a warning shot, killing Beiyang Army soldiers at the gate, which caused Yang Zhen to immediately rush Xian Er and Fan Er back inside his home, thus preventing them from getting into the booby-trapped vehicle. His adjutant, driving a different vehicle, pursued Chong Liming.
The car with the explosives then detonated, confirming to Yang Zhen that Chong Liming had deliberately fired to prevent Xian Er and Fan Er from being caught in the blast. Enraged by this realization, Yang Zhen subjected Xian Er to another brutal beating. Meanwhile, A Yi was still struggling to decrypt the Beiyang Army's new and complex telecom password, which was different from any previous encoding.
He suggested that obtaining Yang Zhen's codebook might be the only way to crack it from "inside." Zhou Jue again expressed concern, not wanting A Yi to take such a risk, also suspecting A Yi’s desire to see Chong Liming. He pointed out that Chong Liming had been in the city for eight days without success, so A Yi might not fare any better. A Yi, for the moment, did not press the issue further. Zhou Jue then invited A Yi to accompany him to inspect the front lines.
