A Yi informed Yang Zhen that he had visited Yanic's clinic but found no pharmacological report. He suspected that someone, likely foreigners, had already taken the report. Yang Zhen, feeling lost and empty since leaving the brilliant situation, expressed his envy for A Yi’s clear path in life. A Yi welcomed Yang Zhen to join the revolutionary movement, but suggested it would be more opportune after the North-South peace talks conclude.
Meanwhile, William reported to Mary that the original pharmacological report was not in his possession, nor had Chong Liming obtained it. Mary, believing Keliline to be an ordinary cough medicine, questioned the fierce competition. William then revealed the truth: Keliline's main ingredient was heroin. Due to the ban on opium in the British Empire, Far East Company had stockpiled large quantities.
They mixed heroin with other ingredients, processed it into capsules in India, and then repackaged it as Keliline in Shanghai to evade restrictions. Outraged, Mary ordered William to immediately cease all sales of Keliline. William countered that this was a directive from the head office and that he had already reported Mary's recent "experience in Shengxin Hospital" to them.
He then presented a telegram from Mary's father, Mr. Kane, which explicitly reminded her to "remember who is your father," effectively forcing her to comply with the company's interests. Before A Yi could reach Yanic’s clinic, Peter Hong, having heard Yanic's confession in the confessional booth about the true pharmacological report being hidden there and his coercion by foreigners, retrieved it.
Yanic, the pharmacological appraiser for Keliline, had admitted to taking bribes to create a false report, while the real one detailed Keliline's addictive and destructive nature. Peter Hong, keen to earn Mr. Jin's trust and advance in the youth gang, presented the report to Mr. Jin, stating he feared it would fall into the brilliant situation's hands if given to Hua Jiuqing.
Mr. Jin instructed Peter Hong to secure the report in a super safe at Hua Nuo Bank and keep its existence a secret from everyone. Later, Yang Zhen returned to the orphanage and found his mother, Ruowan, unwell. She was shivering and repeatedly saying she was cold. Yang Zhen quickly gave her Keliline capsules, which calmed her down and provided relief, indicating her addiction to the substance.
Mr. Jin arranged a meeting with Mary, where he revealed he possessed the pharmacological report for Keliline. He offered to return it to her on the condition that the youth gang receive 30% of Keliline's profits, citing their ability to help expand sales beyond the concession. Mary vehemently refused, asserting Keliline was an exclusive product of the Far East Company and they did not require assistance.
Mr. Jin threatened to make the report public, but Mary remained unfazed, reminding him of the Far East Company's influence with the government amidst China's political instability, suggesting the authorities would favor their version of events. Hua Jiuqing, learning of Mr. Jin's potential cooperation with Mary on the Keliline business, urged him to reconsider, warning that Keliline, being a potent drug containing heroin, was far more dangerous than opium. Mr. Jin, however, was resolute.
He argued that allowing foreigners to monopolize such a powerful drug would destroy their existing opium dens, and he intended to use the report as leverage to secure the youth gang's share of the market. Meanwhile, Yuchu's injuries were steadily improving under Chong Liming's dedicated care. She mentioned Deqi's suggestion for them to return to the capital, but Chong Liming artfully changed the subject, emphasizing her need for continued rest.
She implored him not to take unnecessary risks, to which he promised, then fed her the nourishing soup he had prepared. Deqi, meeting with Chong Liming, conveyed a secret imperial order for the brilliant situation members to remain in Shanghai. When Chong Liming pressed him, Deqi reluctantly admitted that the Qing court was heavily reliant on Yuan Shikai's New Army, fearing a potential conflict with the revolutionary forces.
This revelation deeply pained Chong Liming, Wen Gou, Yuchu, and other brilliant situation members, who felt betrayed by the court's subservience to Yuan Shikai. As the New Year approached, Zhou Jue, unable to leave Shanghai due to the ongoing peace talks, wrote a heartfelt letter to his wife, Yubing, in Guangzhou.
A Yi joined him, and Zhou Jue shared a poignant memory of his comrade, Juemin, who had sacrificed his life for the revolution just days after writing a similar letter to his wife. Together, A Yi and Zhou Jue raised a toast to Juemin and all the martyrs who had given their lives for the revolution without witnessing its success, expressing their hope that their sacrifices would bring about a new future.
Moved by Zhou Jue’s conviction and recalling his own fighting spirit, A Yi asked to learn the song "Young China." As fireworks illuminated the sky, celebrating the New Year, they sang together, their hearts filled with mixed emotions. Later, Chong Liming and Yuchu stood on a balcony, watching the brilliant fireworks, leaning closely against each other. That night, Hua Jiuqing arrived to speak with Chong Liming. She spoke of the youth gang's potential collaboration with foreigners on the Keliline trade.
Chong Liming unequivocally stated his determination to investigate the matter thoroughly, even if it meant becoming an adversary to Mr. Jin. Yuchu, having overheard their conversation, entered the room, seeking an explanation. Hua Jiuqing then revealed that her parents, both members of the youth gang, had died saving Mr. Jin, who subsequently raised her as his own child for ten years, granting her significant status within the gang.
She expressed her profound, lifelong indebtedness to him, leaving both Chong Liming and Yuchu bewildered by the implications of her conflicting loyalties. After leaving Ruowan, Yang Zhen met with Peter Hong, who was exceptionally pleased. Peter Hong proudly displayed Mr. Jin's Hua Nuo Bank safe deposit box key, explaining that he had gained Mr. Jin’s trust by presenting him with the powerful Keliline report.
He boasted that this report would allow the youth gang to challenge the Far East Company's dominance. Yang Zhen quickly conveyed this crucial information to Chong Liming. Yuchu then realized that this was the very matter Hua Jiuqing had attempted to communicate to Chong Liming earlier but had held back.
They now understood that Peter Hong had secured the report before A Yi, having learned of its existence from Yanic's weekly confessions, and had used it as an opportunity to elevate his standing with Mr. Jin.
