Mary shook hands with Chongliming to say goodbye, as Chongliming was still reeling from the shocking news of the imminent demise of the Qing Dynasty. He pondered that without the Qing Dynasty, his identity as a Bayerye would cease to exist. Mary revealed that the company had given up purchasing the railway, and the common people's equity would need to be settled with the court later. If they met again, she mused, everything would surely be different.
Meanwhile, Zhou Jue was overjoyed by the newspaper reports of the Qing Dynasty's impending collapse, celebrating the swift capture of Wuchang and the independence of Hubei, which he saw as a sign of imminent national independence. Chongliming visited Zhou Jue late that night to inform him that the ""200,000"" left by Xiao Ke would be distributed to the farmers and workers who had invested.
He asked Zhou Jue to gather all representatives at the county magistrate's office the next morning to discuss the distribution. Zhou Jue worried that ""Qin Tianming"" might target the Rights Protection meeting. Chongliming assured him that he would guarantee their safety. Zhou Jue seized the opportunity to persuade Chongliming to join the Alliance Congregation, arguing that Chongliming's actions aligned with Sun Yat-sen's livelihood doctrine.
However, Chongliming adamantly refused, stating that his actions were for the common people and his conscience, not for political doctrines. " "Ke Yanxin"", severely wounded, was distraught over the numbness in his arm, fearing it was permanently disabled despite Wagner's best efforts. He was disheartened, struggling to eat and sleep.
Chongliming encouraged him to recuperate, reminding him that his efforts in catching Xiao Ke were crucial, leading to Xiao Ke's execution and the return of the embezzled funds to the public. Si San personally tried to feed ""Ke Yanxin"", but he only kept asking for painkillers, which Si San refused to give due to the risk of addiction. As Zhou Jue and the Rights Protection meeting representatives gathered for the meeting, Chongliming instructed ""Qin Tianming"" to attend. "
"Qin Tianming"" made excuses about inventorying silver and gold, advising Chongliming not to be too compassionate, and claiming that Governor Yuan had already been ordered to suppress the rebels in Wuchang, asserting that the Qing Dynasty would not fall. Chongliming immediately sensed something amiss in ""Qin Tianming's"" tone, realizing he intended to attack the representatives. Without a word, Chongliming rushed to the scene. During this time, A Yi, who had been gloomy, went with Big silly to find Zhou Jue.
The new army guards denied Big silly entry, but Zhou Jue saw A Yi and urged him to leave with him the next day. A Yi, however, expressed his intention to return to the capital with Chongliming. While waiting outside for A Yi, Big silly saw the new army setting up cannons to bombard the assembled representatives. He courageously rushed in to warn them but was shot. Chaos erupted among the representatives.
A Yi provided covering fire, while Yang Ming and Zhou Jue pulled Big silly to safety. With his dying breath, Big silly uttered a final word before succumbing to his injuries. Enraged, A Yi collaborated with Yang Ming to fight back against the new army, repelling them and covering the representatives' retreat from the county office. However, the new army had already positioned cannons at the main gate.
Yang Ming, risking his life under artillery fire, held the gate shut, allowing the representatives to return to the county office, but he sustained severe injuries in the process. Yu Chu, Wen Gou, and Si San arrived to rendezvous with Chongliming. As they prepared to investigate the front hall, ""Qin Tianming's"" men surrounded them. Chongliming confronted ""Qin Tianming"", condemning him for slaughtering innocent civilians. " "Qin Tianming"" insisted they were Alliance Congregation rebels and traitors to the court.
Chongliming pointed his gun at ""Qin Tianming"", compelling the new army soldiers to clear a path. They entered the front hall to find A Yi, Zhou Jue, Yang Ming, and others surrounded. Chongliming again aimed his gun at ""Qin Tianming's"" head, ensuring the escape of A Yi and his group. Zhou Jue found a place to settle Yang Ming, and ""Yubing"" went to fetch Wagner.
Wagner, seeing Yang Ming's severe injuries including spinal trauma, confessed he could do little more than stem the bleeding and provide painkillers. " "Yubing"" expressed her desire to follow Zhou Jue, but he was hesitant due to the inherent dangers. " "Yubing"" was resolute, affirming she would follow him wherever he went, undeterred by the risks. A Yi buried Big silly, heartbroken by the loss of his closest companion.
Chongliming tried to persuade A Yi to return to the capital with him, but A Yi was disillusioned. He declared his intention to join Zhou Jue's revolution, wanting no further ties with the imperial court. He returned his ""Yanshifan token"" to Chongliming, decisively embarking on the revolutionary path. Yu Chu, looking at the token A Yi left behind, was overcome with emotion, and Si San offered her words of comfort. Chongliming met with Qian Kun that night to say goodbye.
Qian Kun believed the Qing Dynasty's time was up, urging Chongliming to carefully consider his future path, expressing great expectations for him. Qian Kun also recited a poem, highlighting the transient nature of dynasties but the enduring spirit of the nation, emphasizing that with young people like Chongliming, hope remained. Yu Chu, preparing to return to the capital with Chongliming the next day, was worried about A Yi.
She risked visiting him to repeatedly warn him to be cautious of the new army's pursuit. Chongliming also sought to take Fang Er back to the capital, but Fang Er wished to stay and live a peaceful life. Chongliming respected her decision, giving her a gun for self-defense before their tearful farewell. The next morning, Chongliming and the ""Yanshifan"" members departed Nanan county for the capital. Qian Kun also began his journey back to his hometown. "
"Qin Tianming"" dispatched men to closely follow them, suspecting they might be harboring rebels, and ordered searches at the city gates, even attempting to inspect Chongliming's carriage, but he was dismissed by Chongliming's guard.
