Chong Liming, in a conversation with Lord Qian, revealed his efforts to persuade Mary to invest two million yuan to repurchase public shares. However, the gentry, led by Liu Yan Jun, who were key members of the Rights Protection Association, still refused to agree.
Lord Qian explained that while two million might be enough for the common people, the gentry, who contributed the most capital, were not interested in the initial return; they were focused on the "hundreds of times of benefits" from the railway's completion, which is why they wouldn't give up. Chong Liming grasped this, suggesting the two million go to the public, letting the gentry incur a loss. Lord Qian cautioned that directly influencing share allocation would be challenging.
The following morning, Chong Liming dispatched Can Yan Xin and Wen Gou to bring Liu Yan Jun and other gentry to a teahouse. They arrived early, without breakfast. Can Yan Xin had the waiter serve them Mengding Ganlu tea and then discreetly left. An hour passed, leaving the gentry famished and full of tea, yet Chong Liming was nowhere to be seen.
Can Yan Xin and Wen Gou then brought and began to eat a lavish meal in front of the starving gentry, openly discussing how Chong Liming had compelled foreigners to pay two million to resolve the share dispute and suggesting that those from the Rights Protection Association who "don't know when to quit" might end up with nothing.
When one squire attempted to leave for the restroom, Can Yan Xin and Wen Gou blocked him, insisting they wait for Chong Liming. Humiliated and desperate from hunger and severe bladder pressure, several gentry members eventually relieved themselves in their trousers. Chong Liming finally arrived, mockingly offering more hot tea. The gentry, completely broken, pleaded for him to speak plainly and agreed to cooperate. Chong Liming then declared that they would receive none of the two million yuan.
After their panicked pleas, Liu Yan Jun, representing the gentry, conceded, stating they would forgo any money and let the entire two million be distributed to the common people. To solidify their agreement and prevent any reneging, Chong Liming made them sign a written pledge on the spot.
At a meeting of the Rights Protection Association, Zhou Jue publicly announced that the squires had agreed to the share compensation plan, prioritizing the two million yuan from the British Railway Corporation for the public. He called for a vote, which saw Liu Yan Jun's group and several other members, including Wang Er, agreeing. Xiao Ke, however, was visibly enraged and abstained from voting.
Meanwhile, Yang Ming visited A Yi in his room and noticed a portrait A Yi had drawn. A Yi identified it as his mother, Ruowan. Yang Ming found her face familiar but couldn't place it. A Yi then shared his tragic past, explaining he grew up without parents and only reunited with his mother just before her death, thanks to Big silly.
He admitted feeling little for her until drawing the portrait and hearing Big silly's stories made her feel "much kinder." Fang Er, speaking with Zhou Jue, expressed doubt that the court would truly compensate for the remaining half of the shares. Zhou Jue remained confident, highlighting the British's initial unwillingness to pay and their current agreement to two million as a "first step victory." He stressed the importance of persistence and strategy.
Fang Er then requested Zhou Jue to keep her visit to Chong Liming a secret from Xiao Ke. Unbeknownst to them, Xiao Ke had already orchestrated a plan, sending Wang Jiankui to assassinate Allen, the manager of the British Railway Corporation, hoping this act would disrupt the compensation agreement. Mary, after seeing Allen depart in his car, was informed that he had been ambushed and shot on his way.
Si San quickly reported Allen's death to Yu Chu, concerned about the implications for the share fund. Chong Liming and Yu Chu soon arrived at the railway company, where Mary was furious. She accused Chong Liming of failed protection and immediately canceled the previous two million yuan compensation offer, stating she would not spend another penny for the Sichuanese people. Yu Chu argued that the killer's identity was unknown and the Rights Protection Association might not be responsible.
Chong Liming found the situation suspicious and promised Mary a full explanation and to find the killer. Chong Liming suspected Xiao Ke's involvement and sent Wen Gou to A Yi. Wen Gou informed A Yi about Allen's assassination and Chong Liming's suspicion of Xiao Ke, tasking A Yi with investigating from within the Qinglong club. Wen Gou also provided a crucial detail: the bullet was a 7. 92 caliber "Hanyang-made" rifle bullet.
Big silly then led A Yi to the backyard armory, where A Yi quickly found an identical long gun. It was later revealed that Xiao Ke had deliberately left a "flaw" in the armory as a test to verify A Yi's identity. A Yi reported his findings to Zhou Jue, implicating Xiao Ke in Allen's assassination. Zhou Jue confronted Xiao Ke, who vehemently denied the accusation, calling it a joke.
Zhou Jue argued that Xiao Ke sabotaged the share return because he opposed the money going to the workers and farmers first. Xiao Ke, angered, stated that the Qinglong club always fought openly and would not resort to assassination, questioning why they wouldn't have acted sooner if they intended to. Xiao Ke then asserted that the Rights Protection Association could only have one leader, himself, and demanded Zhou Jue's cooperation. Zhou Jue rejected this proposition outright.
That night, Zhou Jue secretly gathered Rights Protection Association representatives, including Zou Yun, Wang Er, and Wen Xiaoliang. He announced a critical decision: the association must move out of the Qinglong club and establish a new base, as the club was causing "chaos" and jeopardizing their future. He revealed that the Qinglong club's assassination of Allen had caused the British Railway Corporation to revoke their share repurchase offer. The representatives were shocked and angered by Xiao Ke's actions.
Zhou Jue outlined their strength—representing nearly 2,000 people—and proposed that forming a new association offered a "glimmer of hope" for renewed negotiations, especially before the new army arrived in Nanan City within three or four days, which would make negotiations impossible. Zou Yun, Wang Er, and the other representatives agreed to join Zhou Jue, emphasizing their urgent need for compensation. Meanwhile, Yu Chu, analyzing the crime scene, deduced that the assassin was injured.
Wagner reported that initial blood spatter indicated an arterial hit, but the trail later lessened, suggesting the bullet didn't hit a vital organ and was likely still in the assassin's body. Yu Chu concluded that the assassin would seek medical attention. She dispatched Can Yan Xin and Wen Gou to search traditional Chinese medicine shops for those buying wound care medicines and to investigate local doctors. Wagner and Si San were tasked with checking Western medicine clinics for debridement surgeries.
Yu Chu stressed the urgency of finding the killer quickly, suggesting they coordinate with County Magistrate Cao for additional manpower. Chong Liming also discussed the grim situation with Lord Qian, lamenting the setback with the British and the difficulty of helping the people when the court was indifferent. He noted that his own punishment from the court would arrive with the new army in a few days, emphasizing the critical need to resolve all issues before then.
Wang Jiankui reported Zhou Jue's secret meeting to Xiao Ke, informing him that Zhou Jue had met with influential representatives like Wen Xiaoliang, Wang Er, Sun Jian, and Zou Yun, seemingly to rally them. Xiao Ke, confirming the representatives' significant influence, instructed Wang Jiankui to proceed with their plan to "cut the grass and eliminate the root," indicating his intention to eliminate these representatives.
Later, Wang Jiankui brought a bottle of liquor to Big silly and A Yi, celebrating the anniversary of having saved Big silly's life in the capital two years prior. A Yi, unsuspecting, and Big silly drank heavily, quickly becoming intoxicated. While A Yi was incapacitated, Wang Jiankui subtly retrieved A Yi's Yanshifan token.
He then pulled Big silly aside, entrusting him with a "task": to inform Wen Xiaoliang, Wang Er, and Zou Yun that Mr. Zhou Jue wished to meet them in Room 203 of the Dexing Hotel tomorrow at 8 AM. Big silly, completely drunk and trusting, agreed to deliver the message.
