When Zhou Jue and Yi Xintian arrived at the Green Dragon Society, Xiao Ke thoroughly questioned A Yi's identity before allowing them to stay. Zhou Jue introduced Yi Xintian as a student from Sichuan Tongsheng University and his secretary, assigned by the Alliance Congregation. As Zhou Jue was led to a guest room, Fang Er stopped A Yi, revealing she recognized him as Chong Liming's man, and deduced Chong Liming sent him.

A Yi offered no answer, but Fang Er promised to keep his identity secret, despite Xiao Ke's growing suspicions. Meanwhile, Yuchu had been somber since seeing an amnesiac Yang Ming, unsure if she should seek revenge or let go. To cheer her up, Chong Liming took her to a newly opened shop serving spicy bean flower.

At the Green Dragon Society, Yu Bing helped Zhou Jue settle into his room and gave him a small gourd, explaining it was a traditional charm to protect travelers from harm and difficulties. Fang Er, increasingly uneasy about Chong Liming's intentions in sending A Yi, directly confronted him. A Yi admitted he and Zhou Jue were there to prevent the Green Dragon Society's planned actions because Qian Daren had already agreed not to sign the contract with the foreigners.

Realizing this was part of Chong Liming's larger scheme, Fang Er ceased her questioning. Later, while eating spicy bean flower with Chong Liming, Yuchu challenged his decision to obstruct the signing, reminding him that Yan Shifan's mission was to protect the British delegation. Chong Liming calmly asserted that their true purpose was to help the people resolve their stock capital issues first, and only then facilitate the signing.

He argued that helping the common people was synonymous with helping the court, as the populace forms the very foundation of the state. Left without a counter-argument, Yuchu could only warn him not to disappoint her. In the Green Dragon Society's kitchen, A Yi unexpectedly found Big Silly preparing food. Overjoyed, A Yi embraced him.

Big Silly, equally delighted, introduced A Yi to Wang Jiankui, explaining that Wang Jiankui had rescued him after he collapsed on the roadside, bringing him to the Green Dragon Society. A Yi thanked Wang Jiankui for his kindness, and Big Silly, eager to celebrate, prepared a large feast. During the meal, Wang Jiankui subtly probed A Yi about the Alliance Congregation.

A Yi elaborated on the Alliance Congregation's principles of national liberation, civil rights, and people's livelihood, emphasizing that the fundamental goal was improving people's lives—ensuring the poor had food to eat and warm clothes to wear. Wang Jiankui raised a toast to A Yi's dedication to the people's livelihood. Under the cover of darkness, Xiao Ke met privately with Cao county magistrate. Cao county magistrate advised him to simply obstruct the signing without escalating the situation to avoid severe repercussions.

Xiao Ke then bribed Cao Daren with a substantial sum, asking him to uncover Zhou Jue's hidden connections. With the Sino-British signing ceremony scheduled for the next morning at 9 AM, Xiao Ke convened the Rights Protection Alliance members. He demonstrated the destructive power of incendiary bombs, declaring his intention to throw these devices at Mary as soon as she appeared at the railway station, aiming to injure her as a warning to the foreigners and stop the signing.

The crowd enthusiastically agreed. However, Zhou Jue arrived just in time to intervene. He calmly informed everyone that Qian Daren would not sign the contract and presented Chief Editor Zhao from the newspaper, who testified that Mary had paid 500 taels of silver to publish false news about the signing, a fact of which Qian Daren was entirely unaware. Xiao Ke refused to believe it, accusing Zhou Jue and Qian Daren of collusion.

Zhou Jue defended Qian Daren, highlighting his benevolence, such as personally funding a porridge factory to help the elderly, sick, and disabled. Yu Bing and other members voiced their trust in Zhou Jue, leading Xiao Ke to reluctantly abandon his immediate plan. Later, Fang Er tried to persuade Xiao Ke to trust Zhou Jue, but Xiao Ke remained convinced that Qian Daren was merely another official who betrayed his country for glory.

Fang Er's appeal, mentioning Chong Liming's promise to protect the people, only infuriated Xiao Ke further. He vehemently rejected Chong Liming's name and angrily insisted on burning Mary and Qian Daren. He voiced concerns that Zhou Jue was attempting to usurp his leadership. That night, A Yi confided in Big Silly, revealing he was not part of the Alliance Congregation but from Shenji Camp, and that he and his comrades had avenged their massacred village.

He also delivered the sorrowful news of their mother's death. With Big Silly as his only remaining kin, A Yi promised that after completing his mission, they would leave together and never be separated again. Meanwhile, Mary urgently cabled her company headquarters, reporting the impending signing and requesting 4 million in funds to appease the local populace afterward.

Qian Daren, sleepless with worry, shared his despair with Chong Liming, expressing his belief that the Qing Dynasty was beyond salvation and nearing its end. The following morning, Mary and Qian Daren arrived at the train station to find it besieged by angry citizens protesting the signing. Qian Daren, addressing the crowd, proclaimed that the railway rights rightfully belonged to the people of Nanan.

He swore he would never sign the contract with the British, declaring he would rather lose his official position than betray his people. He dramatically removed his official hat, drawing cheers and applause from the crowd. Mary, enraged by this turn of events, stormed off. Xiao Ke, who had brought a bag full of incendiary canisters, stood stunned by Qian Daren's unexpected act of defiance. Witnessing Qian Daren's unwavering integrity, Chong Liming and Yuchu were deeply moved.

Chong Liming concluded that Mary would undoubtedly face severe reprimand from her company for her failure to secure the signing. He saw this as an opportune moment to pressure Mary into returning the people's stock capital.
