Chongliming confronted Dong Xiao, who was furiously ordering Chongliming and his cook to be buried alive for disturbing his father's grave. Chongliming, however, pulled out his gun and threatened Dong Xiao and his housekeepers, forcing them to open the coffin. To their surprise, the coffin was empty. Seeing his deception uncovered, Dong Lianhai emerged.
He claimed that he had been forced to fake his death out of fear of the new Empress Dowager, stating that after the late Empress Dowager passed, he felt his world had collapsed and many people wished him dead. He had hoped to live out his days peacefully and anonymously, even having Dong Xiao pose as his filial son. Chongliming, uninterested in his excuses, pressed him for information about the "Worry-free solution."
Dong Lianhai explained that it was a substance imported from the British Empire, specially used to soothe the late Emperor and help him sleep. He insisted it was not the cause of the Emperor's death and even demonstrated its effects by taking it himself, claiming he relied on it daily to cope with his grief over the late Empress Dowager.
Dong Lianhai then offered Chongliming some honey-roasted venison, mentioning the honey came from the local Fengling flowers, which Chongliming found to be exceptionally delicious, unlike anything he had tasted in the capital. As Chongliming prepared to leave, Dong Lianhai implored him to keep his secret, and Chongliming agreed, assuring him he would tell no one. However, Dong Lianhai secretly instructed Dong Xiao to ambush Chongliming.
As Chongliming walked through a field of beautiful pink Fengling flowers, masked men appeared and set the field ablaze. The smoke, as Dong Lianhai had previously explained, produced a dizzying and disorienting scent that could cause one to lose consciousness or even die. Feeling disoriented, Chongliming struggled to escape, deliberately cutting his hand to leave a trail of bloodstains in the bamboo forest, successfully leading Dong Xiao and his men away.
After making his escape, Chongliming washed his face in a cold stream to clear his head, silently vowing to kill Dong Lianhai for his betrayal. Meanwhile, Rui Zhen summoned Yang Zhen, questioning him about Chongliming's whereabouts. Yang Zhen initially evaded the questions, insisting he was only focused on his training for the Shenji camp. Rui Zhen, however, persisted, exploiting the tension between Yang Zhen and others like Ke Yanxin and Wen Gou.
She pointed out that as Yang Ming's adopted son from a fallen family, Yang Zhen was often overlooked and ostracized by the other noble-born members. Rui Zhen then presented Yang Zhen with an opportunity, highlighting the growing conflict between their group and Chongliming, implying that Yang Zhen would have to choose a side. Yang Zhen seemed swayed by her proposition.
Rui Zhen then reported to Mu Yi that Yang Zhen appeared tempted, concluding that despite his seemingly honest demeanor, Yang Zhen was cunning and could be a useful pawn in their plans against Chongliming. That night, Chongliming secretly returned to Dong Jiayu. He discovered a hidden stone door in the backyard and, upon entering, found a secret chamber.
Inside, a woman, later identified as Hua Jiuqing, dressed in the attire of the Empress Dowager, complete with a phoenix coronet, was tied to a bed. As Chongliming tried to question her identity, Dong Lianhai ambushed him, knocking him unconscious. Chongliming awoke to find himself chained. Dong Lianhai dotingly served Hua Jiuqing a lavish meal of Cherry meat and Bird's Nest silver ear soup, treating her as if she were the Empress Dowager.
Dong Xiao suggested killing Chongliming to prevent him from exposing their secrets, but Dong Lianhai refused, insisting that Chongliming could not be killed without the Empress Dowager's decree. Dong Xiao argued that the Empress Dowager was long dead and Hua Jiuqing was merely a look-alike. Dong Lianhai, angered, slapped Dong Xiao and fiercely asserted that Hua Jiuqing was indeed the Empress Dowager, claiming she looked identical to the Empress Dowager in her youth.
He also ordered Dong Xiao to retrieve more of the "Worry-free solution" from the capital. Chongliming tried repeatedly to break his chains and urged Hua Jiuqing to speak, but she remained silent. When Dong Lianhai returned to bring soup for Hua Jiuqing, Chongliming, desperate, first tried to assert his identity as Er ji Bei Le Ye Chongliming, but it had no effect. He then pleaded with Hua Jiuqing for water.
Dong Lianhai, observing through a peephole, smirked as Chongliming drank the water. Chongliming quickly realized the water was poisoned and felt his senses blurring. For several days, Dong Lianhai continued to provide Chongliming with only poisoned water, confident that Chongliming was now addicted and controllable. Suddenly, Yu Chu arrived at Dong Jiayu, seeking Chongliming. Dong Lianhai lied, claiming Chongliming had left four or five days prior.
Yu Chu, aware that Chongliming had not returned to the capital and had outstanding duties, found his prolonged absence suspicious. Despite Dong Lianhai's insistence that he had personally seen Chongliming off at the village entrance, Yu Chu decided to stay the night in the room Chongliming had occupied. Dong Lianhai grew anxious about Yu Chu's presence, fearing she might have been sent by Lord Zhe Yu. He secretly plotted to expedite her departure.
In the secret chamber, he complained to Hua Jiuqing about Yu Chu disrupting their peace. Chongliming, regaining some consciousness, angrily warned Dong Lianhai not to harm Yu Chu, but Dong Lianhai severely reprimanded him, reminding Chongliming of his helpless state and claiming that if anything happened to Yu Chu, it would be Chongliming's fault for attracting her. Late that night, Yu Chu was caught exploring the backyard by Dong Lianhai, who swiftly directed her back to her room.
The following morning, Dong Lianhai personally escorted Yu Chu out of the village, requesting her to speak favorably of him to Lord Zhe Yu. As Yu Chu departed, she happened upon Chongliming's pistol in the Fengling flower field. Meanwhile, Chongliming, weakened and delirious from days of poisoned water and no food, was thrown a bun by Hua Jiuqing. He eagerly ate it, then turned to her, sharing his plan. He revealed his intention to feign weakness to make their captors relax their guard, then kill them when they approached, vowing to escape and take her with him.
