When Ye Lingtian (Lionel York) was young, he and his mother, Zhou Qingxue, were hunted down. His godmother, He Wenqian (Miranda Hill), saved their lives at the cost of her own.
Twenty years later, Ye Lingtian has risen to become the world-famous "Dark Emperor." He returns to Jiangcheng to repay his debt of gratitude, search for his mother, and seek revenge.
As fate would have it, he is already betrothed to He Wenqian's daughter, Chen Xiaoran (Sierra Clark). After he heals Chen Xiaoran's legs, she and her father, Chen Guiyuan, look down on him.
When Ye Lingtian protects Chen Xiaoran and crosses paths with the son of his old enemy, Lei Liehu, Chen Xiaoran and Chen Guiyuan blame him for dragging the Chen family into trouble and throw him out.
