The drama is adapted from Chen Yan's novel of the same name, which won the Mao Dun Literature Prize. The story follows the half-century-long artistic journey of Yi Qin'e, a renowned Qin opera singer, as she grows from a young goat herder through various struggles in the theater troupe to eventually become a leading performer on stage through sheer hard work.

Sinopsis
Years ago, when the county opera troupe was recruiting students, Hu Sanyuan, who worked as a drummer in the troupe, signed up his niece on his behalf. He changed her name to Yi Qing'e and brought her from her hometown to learn Qin opera.
However, due to Hu Sanyuan, Yi Qing'e's path to learning Qin opera was filled with difficulties. But through her hard work and natural talent, she earned the recognition and enthusiastic support of the troupe's leading actresses Hua Caixiang and Mi Lan, as well as four veteran artists.
Her debut performance amazed audiences in the county, and after taking on a leading role and changing her name to Yi Qin'e, she was transferred to the provincial Qin opera troupe. In her new environment, she faced many challenges but continued to practice tirelessly, achieving repeated success on stage.
As the times changed, Yi Qin'e experienced many ups and downs in her journey from goat herder to kitchen girl, then to supporting roles, and finally leading lady. Yet she remained confident, stayed true to the stage, and resisted all temptations, becoming the main character of her own life.
When faced with a competition for the leading role from her adopted daughter on stage, she was briefly confused. But soon, she realized that passing on the art of Qin opera was the true meaning of being a "main character“.
